Drew Henson's days with the Dallas Cowboys are numbered.

Henson

"Drew Henson is not going to be on roster this year," Bill Parcells told reporters Wednesday.

"I just didn't see enough. We tried very diligently with this guy," Parcells said.

The Cowboys didn't announce any roster moves involving Henson on Wednesday.

Henson was inactive as the No. 3 quarterback in all 16 games behind Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo last season. He took snaps at quarterback just twice in 2004, and was replaced in the second half by Vinny Testaverde in the only game he has started for the Cowboys.

In March 2004, the Cowboys acquired Henson as their apparent quarterback of the future from the Houston Texans, for a third-round draft pick. The Texans drafted Henson in the sixth round in 2003. Dallas gave him an eight-year contract that guaranteed him $3.5 million and could be voided after four years.

Before that, Henson had played three seasons of professional baseball in the New York Yankees organization. His last snap in a meaningful game had been for Michigan in the Citrus Bowl on New Year's Day 2001.

Henson started eight games that 2000 season with Michigan, a year after he had split time with Tom Brady.

I'm not that surprised. Just like Clemens, you don't get a sure fire QB prospect. Especially in the 3rd round. Sometimes you get lucky and catch something great. Most of the time you get Browning Nagle.

Hensen wasn't drafted in the 3rd round - he was drafted in the 6th round.

Getting a first-round talent at QB guarantees nothing as well:

Druckenmiller, Leaf, Couch, Akili Smith, McNown, Harrington, Ramsey, Boller, Grossman, Losman...it's less than 50/50. Even among the "premiere" prospects. So you go with your gut based on film/interviews & don't worry about what Mel Kiper et al say. While no position is "bust-proof" it is (along with WR) one of the lower-percentage picks for "sure-thing" prospects.

The “next two” (first-day) picks after the first-round:

2005 Charlie Frye (3), Andrew Walter (3)

2004 Matt Schaub (3)

2003 Dave Ragone (3), Chris Simms (3)

2002 Josh McCown (3)

2001 Drew Brees (2), Quincy Carter (2)

2000 Carmazzi (3), Redman (3) Both were terrible. But oddly, two 6th-rounders were “ok’ (Brady & Bulger)

1999 S.King (2), Brock Huard (3)

1998 Batch (3), Quinn (3). Also another 6th-rounder was ok – M.Hasselbeck

1997 Plummer (2)

The point is not that picks after round 1 are just as good (though 2nd/3rd-round picks have pretty close to the same bust-factor as the 1st rounders). But that first round does not guarantee you a better QB. It only guarantees you a better prospect in the eyes of those who believe it to be so.

The 2nd-rounders – Brees, Carter, King, Plummer surely are not the 4 best QB’s in the land. But they are/were all better than Nagle.

Henson WAS drafted in the 3rd round. Of the 1998 baseball draft that is.

Well as you guys pointed out there is no thing as a can't miss. BUT -- Henson was projected to be one of the top picks overall in the football draft. If he stayed in school that season. Instead he went to the minors for the Yankees.

What a strange run he has had. Go to the Yankees when he is on the verge of something really big in football. Get traded by the Yankees. Get reacquired by the Yankees. Only to basically fail in the minors and then go back to football and fail again.

Hope he has the signing bonus money. He did do one thing that not many people have done though. He got a hit in the majors! Long live that magical 2003 season. He was 1 for 8 that year!
