A little early in the day, but it's never to early for duscussion.

Oden reportedly to go #1 overrall, but I think that is a horrible pick, does anyone agree/disagree?

The best big man to come out since that Tim Duncan guy at Wake Forest is a horrible pick?

So Kevin Durant may be better in the future. But the immediate impact guy is Oden. He can come in and be a top 10 center immediately.

I hardly even pay attention to the NBA. I don't even have a favorite team. But one thing is for certain: the Celtics will screw something up and Boston fans will be upset.

Horrible may be too strong a word, but my intent is there.

I think it is a bad pick because they already took Lamarcus Aldrige a future Center last year (once he packs on some strength.) Lamarcus, Randolph, Durant, Roy, and Jack is alot more scary.

Well with all the wheeling and dealing they did last season, would it be overly surprising to see them move Randolph somewhere and make Lamarcus a power forward and be akin to the Spurs (ie Robinson and Duncan)?

If there is one guy beside Roy on that team that is untradeable it is Randolph, he is about 23 and he is already one of the top big men in the game.

If they trade a solid double double guy like Randolph for a new comer they will be the new dolphins.

I love this story. The best business deal in sports history bar none-

NBA Edition: Silna Family "Fortune" And The Draft

Posted By:Darren Rovell

The Spirits of St. Louis

Let's just say there was probably some champagne passed around in the Silna family yesterday. That's because the Silna brothers, Ozzie and Dan, learned that they'll be paid some $ 136 million over the next eight years. The checks will be coming from the Denver Nuggets, the San Antonio Spurs, the New Jersey Nets and the Indiana Pacers.

If you haven't heard the story, it's a classic and is probably the best business deal of all-time.

In 1976, the NBA allowed four ABA teams to pay a $3.2 million expansion fee to be let into the NBA. Two teams, the Kentucky Colonels and the Spirits of St. Louis, were denied entry. Since the NBA required that the ABA to settle everything up, the ABA owners were forced to negotiate with Colonels owner John Y. Brown Jr. and the Spirits of St. Louis owners--Ozzie and Dan Silna. Brown took a lump sum of $3.3 million. The Silnas took $2.2 million and 1/7 th of the television revenue of the four teams going in: the Nuggets, the Spurs, the Nets and the Pacers, in perpetuity.

That's right. They forever get a piece. So let's show you the math on this thing. Yesterday, spirits_stLouis_logo.gif,standard.jpgthe NBA announced its new TV deal yesterday with ABC/ESPN and TNT. It's an eight-year deal that starts in the 2008-09 season. Under the deal, the league will be paid an average of $930 million per annum, as first reported by The Sports Business Daily.

That means for each of the next eight years, 25 NBA teams will make $31 million. The four former ABA teams will make $26.8 million. The Silnas will pick up $17 million and their attorney, who helped negotiate the deal, Donald Schupak collects $1.9 million.

The Nuggets, Spurs, Nets and Pacers, by the way, are actually giving more than 14.2 percent (1/7th) of their revenue to the Silnas and Schupak. This is because the math for the deal is locked in at 28 teams. So those four teams are actually giving up a greater percentage. Each of the Silna brothers gets 45 percent each and Schupak gets 10 percent of the total payday.

I've figured that since 1976, the Silna brothers have earned about $180 million, so they're total take through the 2015-16 season will be $320 million. Many people point out that if the Silnas did have the right to get into the league and still had their team, they would have paid $3.2 million for a team now worth some $320 million. What you have to remember though is that isn’t pure profit, like it is now.

I worked very hard of the last couple weeks to get the Silna Brothers and Don Schupak to talk, but I was unsuccessful. I did however (see video below) get some great storytellers--Carl Scheer, the former general manager of the Denver Nuggets and John Y. Brown Jr., the Colonels owner who took the $3.3 million payday instead:

What was the environment that led to the deal?

Scheer: We were in suicide mode. There was really no choice. We had no other negotiating power. We had no leverage with the NBA and we had to take care of our ABA partners.

Brown: Everyone was losing money and there wasn’t much hope for a future without a merger. Hopefully, we can get that video up. I left a space for it.

What was the outlook on the NBA TV business at the time?

Scheer: NBA television was modest at best. In fact, the Finals were delayed and were not shown live in the late 70s. There were those who understood what the future might bring for the NBA, but most so-called experts thought that pro basketball had a very modest future.

John, how did it come about - the $3.3 million for you?

Brown: They asked me, ‘What do you want?’ And I said, ‘Well, what do you think is fair?’ And they said, ‘Would you take two million dollars?’ And I said I would. Four hours later, after the Silnas went into the room, it became $3.3 million.

How did the Silnas pull this thing off?

Scheer: They had one thing going for them. They had the leverage in the sense that they were the kamikaze. They were going to go for it. If we didn’t agree to that, I was convinced they would take us all down.

Brown: They were a couple of rogues that were new to the league and they held them up for all they could get…As they say, there’s the truth and then there’s the real truth. The truth of the matter is, it’s about the biggest hold-up I’ve ever seen in business. It was highly unethical.

I disagree, you can't win a championchip without a big man.

Obvious, Oden they announced it yestarday, did you see Noah's outfit?

I read an article the other day on espn.com and Noah said he would wear something outrageous. He didn't disappoint!

I'm not sure I'm fully on board with the Celtics getting Ray Allen.

Bobcats took Brandan Wright with the #8 overall pick.

If I can't get any tickets to UNC Basketball this upcoming season, I will just drive down to see the "other Tarheels" play in Charlotte. :)

Go Bobcats!

Yeah man, they got Jared Dudley too....they sure are loading up on ACC players.

Dudley is a good player. You have seen him in action, but the rest of the Country has no idea who he is.

Nice pick.

as much as I don't like the Knicks or Isiah, he made a GREAT deal getting Randolph & Dickau for Frye & Steve Francis.

Frye in my opinion had a nice rookie year and became grealty over rated, Francis had no place on that team. Randolph will be a nice addition for them to go along side Curry.

Also, the Nets made an awesome pick in getting Sean Williams. he is a good low post player, on both ends of the court, very athletic & great shot blocker. just as long as they keep him away from Cliff Robinson. :cool0044:

Sean Williams loves his weed. Great potential but an accident waiting to happen.

Agreed on Frye , he is a mediocre player. The Knicks should have went Bynum in that draft anyway....

Problem with Randolph is he doesnt defend and the Knicks need to defend better in the low blocks and that sure is not happening with randolph and curry patrolling the paint. I love Randolphs offensive game and rebounding, but he has character issues and a big contract. At least he does seem to have a good work ethic..

44. Zach Randolph, Portland Trailblazers

by Henry Abbott of TrueHoop.com

Scottie Pippen has a very deep voice, and he can use it, at times, to make things sound profound. When I spent a couple of hours interviewing him back in his Portland years, in a swanky hotel bar, Pippen said many memorable things. But the most memorable thing he said? The moment when his voice was gravelly bassiest? That’s when looked me square in the eye and pronounced “Zach Randolph works HARD.” He meant HARD. He said Randolph worked as hard as any teammate he had ever had, and well, I think we all know who Scottie played with.

So, look, Randolph deserves some knocks for how he handles his off-court business. Yeah, fine, whatever. No one’s proud of that mess. But please, let’s not confuse poor judgment with poor work ethic. The Blazer training staff confirms it: This man works.

And what does he work on? Conditioning. Weightlifting. Back to the basket stuff. Jumpers. Drop steps. Jab steps. Hooks. Step-backs. Fadeaways. (And, as the joke goes, if there are a few minutes left at the end of all that, he might work occasionally on passing out of the double team.) He gets 18 points per game out of all that, mostly working in the paint against bigger, taller, more athletic players. He’s a bona fide low-post scoring threat, and if your big doesn’t feel like playing tough defense, Zach’s going to make life miserable. He can get to the line, too, having made free throws by the baker’s dozen in more than one game.

These days, he does a lot of that without a lot of jumping. He’s essentially ground bound at the age of 26. Last year, he never even scrounged two blocks in a single game, because he’s still on the long tail of recovery after the devastation of microfracture knee surgery. (Ask Chris Webber, Jason Kidd, or Amare Stoudemire: that knee injury and surgery is like a time machine — it makes you play like you’re 50 hanging around the Y, touting the benefits of “half-court” and zone defense.) But even though at 6-9 Randolph’s shorter than a lot of big men, and he is stapled to the floor nearly all the time, even in his first season recovering from the surgery he was a top-20 rebounder.

How does he do that? The dog that’s in him simply has a strong nose for that ball. His hands just seem too end up where the ball is more than their fair share of the time. Part of that is long arms. Part of that is reading the ball. Part of that is good hands. But a lot of it? It’s just work

In all seriousness, the Randolph trade, from the Knicks Point of view was remarkable, they got rid of one of those huge contracts and gave up a guy whom had a good first season but done nothing to speak of since.

For the Blazers, they gave up a perennial double double guy with no real injury or law problems to speak of, for an aging washed up PG and a young still unproved PF.

So Charlotte turned around and dealt Brandan Wright to Golden State in return for Jason Richardson.

I guess this is a good move (I don't follow the NBA much but I have heard of the guy) but I wanted to see Wright play locally again.

Oh well, at least he was a Bobcat for a brief time. That's business.
