your not seeing the big picture here. You have kids. kids are important. if you dont have kids, then other peoples kids are the future of this country. the fact of the matter, despite summers off and TENURE (who in this country REALLY feels that their job is at stake anyway?) teacher are in a situation where they make barely enough to just live. Secondly, possibility of making more money in the future is also squooshed. So, if teachers make relatively small dough, what brilliant person can afford to be a teacher when other fields simply pay more? so what kind of teachers can you expect?

If doctors werent paid well, there wouldnt be any doctors. who would you go to when your sick?

Bottom line is that they are important and they should be given a bit more dough. Not the motherload, just enough so that they can live failry easily

Plenty of people! There's a real, competitive, scary world out there where lay-offs and out-sourcing are facts of life. In the corporate, dog-eat-dog world, you are hard pressed to find absolute job security.

Never said they're not important.

Instead of "despite summers off and TENURE teachers are in a situation where they make barely enough to just live," perhaps it should be "in spite of summers off and TENURE they still complain that they are in a situation where they make barely enough to just live."

Need more money? Get a job during the 3 months you have off. Wait tables. Install sprinkler systems. Work as a receptionist in an office. Whatever.

Just stop complaining.

first of all Im not complaining and again you are missing the point here. Ill try it again.

Teachers are educated persons just like any other profession.

However, there is no money in teaching. thats just the way it is.

So, if you say that they are important then wouldnt you want the best that you could get to teach? whats the big deal?

So you expect a schooled person to go deliver papers or serve soft drinks 2 months a year?

Looks to me like YOUR the complainer. Just pay up and shut up

who says that schools dont teach healthy eating habits? They go over that ad nauseum. They have health classes.

Either way, kids are going to do what they want. Why is it then that they should be given dangerous foods in school? That doesnt make a bit of sense to me. I hope you realize that EVERYTHING schools serve is BAD. There is NOTHING nutricious here. Its all fried fatty stuff and sugars. If schools had NOTHING BUT GOOD< HEALTHY LEAN food, the kid would have no choice but to eat right AT LEAST at school if no where else.

Honestly cousel, it is YOU argument that makes no sense at all. A school takes the iniciative to finally do the right thing and they get blasted by you even though they have health classes

i want my kid to have a ice cream for dessert at school,,he should have a choice,,he knows his limits,,

its the old everything done for the lowest common denominator

quit focusing on worthless bs and pissing off taxpayers by wasting our money trying to micromanage children's lives when your mission is education and maybe we'll vote for a raise.

better yet, i propose financing a teacher pay raise with cafeteria ice cream sales.

I like how often times people start in with "you think your so smart" or "you think you know about x" all the time with me.

Did I just get on a soap box and proclaim my superior knowledge to the world? I dont remember doing that, and yet, I hear that comment all too often.

Your giving your opinion, and your not being told that "you think your so smart" But I hear it all the time.

I was at a function a few years back and met a woman who was a friend of a friends friend - whatever - anyway, 32 year old music teacher for a toney town in a Massachusetts High School. 60K - summers off - several weeks vacation - plus whatever p/t gigs she had giving viloin and piano lessons. Married to a successful financial planner. No children at the time.

Honestly, that doesn't sound so bad to me. Sure - she wasn't making BIG money - but she worked basically part-time supervising chorus, you know? Where do I sign up for that? :)

kids can't even have an ice cream cone once a week anymore. maybe if schools focused on teaching rather than taking feel-good positions we wouldn't be losing ground to every other industrialized nations' students. i'd like to see a school ban illiteracy or ban passing students who fail to meet minimum competency for their grade level. maybe the reasons are kids are so fat is that schools are also afraid to let the little dumplings outside to play because it might foster "competitiveness" (can't have that) or--god forbid--a scraped knee.

Greenwich, Conn. School Bans Desserts

Principal Tired Of Seeing Healthy Lunches Thrown Away

Cindy Hsu GREENWICH, Conn. (CBS) ― More and more children are now facing obesity and Type-2 diabetes, so how do we get our kids to eat healthy, especially when they're not at home?

As CBS 2 HD recently found out, there's a school in Greenwich that's trying to change the trend by banning certain food.

When asked if his mother was to allow him to eat any foods he wanted, what he would eat, 8-year-old James Budkins didn't hesitate.

"Ice cream, bacon and fries," he said.

When asked what his favorite food is, 10-year-old Willie Budkins pulled no punches.

"Cookies, ice cream," he said.

Not in this cafeteria.

Glenville School in Greenwich is trying to turn things around, starting this year ice cream and cookies are no longer sold in the cafeteria. Instead they have fruit and yogurt as an option.

Parents were doing their best, sending their kids to school with healthy lunches or hoping they'd make decent choices if they were buying lunch at school. But when cookies and ice cream were offered two days a week, things changed in a hurry.

"I was seeing children racing to get in line, abandoning their lunch, to get to the cookies to get to the ice cream," PTA co-president Alicia Budkins said. "So hopefully that won't happen anymore. They'll sit down eat their good lunch, and then they'll go outside and play."

While a lot of parents love the idea, you can imagine how the kids feel.

"All the kids, especially all the boys in the 5th grade were shouting, 'we want ice cream, we want ice cream,'" 10-year-old Andrew Gilbert said.

Principal Marc D'Amico said he was tired of seeing healthy lunches thrown in the garbage, so kids could get to the sweet stuff, and says his new policy is fighting more than childhood obesity.

"When children have nutritionally sound lunches and breakfasts, they're better able to focus during the school day and their concentration levels are higher," D'Amico said.

While a lot of kids miss the treats, some are slowly coming around.

"I sort of wish we still had it, but what I do like about is it's getting kids to eat healthier," Gilbert said.

And that's the lesson teachers are hoping will last a lifetime.

Parents can pack anything they want in their kids' lunch, but they've all received the school's wellness policy that encourages them to go for healthy snacks.

This is in Greenwich, CT which has one of the best school systems in the country. I know, lets not get into this again right? Well this is a very good idea. If you want your kids to eat what he wants, he gets home at 3 O'Clock, feed it to him then. If you are REALLY concerned, then pick him up for lunch and take him to McDonald's. Oh, and since when are we falling behind other countries in the discovery of new things?

an occassional ice cream is harmless SJ but i dont think you realize just how bad school food is for you. Its poison. And, they have soda machines on every floor. a can of soda has 40 packets of sugar in it........

if kids could make thier own decisions in life they wouldnt need parents

i don't want my kid to eat pizza, milk products or eggs. i demand the school ban these. or, everyone teaches their own kid what they can and cannot eat. boy, sometimes simple solutions are lost on "smart" people.

you've got it wrong. parents are not supposed to make decisions for their kids forever, you have to give them to tools to make them on their own. this is probably actually the problem, egos expanding with the myspace generation yet they are the most dependant generation ever because they have been restricted like veal their entire lives.

ya, my only beef is it wasnt bad for 50 years until yuppy parents stopped parenting..where do we stop,,

do we now only serve range free chicken cause some groups say better? Or low-fat cheese?, or whole wheat bread,,at what point is it silly and caving into people who know no bounds?

it seems we may be putting cart before horse here,,and once you reward poor societal behavior it becomes a norm, possibly unfixable..

i took health class. it is a joke. the teacher didn't want to be there (very few teacher are hired solely to teach "health"). we just did homework for other classes the entire time. it's a throw-away class and you know it.

really? so the entire school system is now being judged because johnny green balls had a bad experience?

that's the problem, i don't want schools following the latest hot diet fad. i want them teaching math and science. nothing more, nothing less. until we get our education system fixed, i'm sick of schools wagging the dog by focusing on all these social issues.

yes they need to learn independence. How about my 6th graders though? do you think any lesson even from christ himself will keep them away from the candies?

It would if you told them that eating candy will make you look like your teacher.

you don't think health classes and phys ed is a joke in this country? where did you go to school? sparta?

JGB, you are applying a VERY teeny tiny personal experience to the whole country. Think about it.

No I had health classes. My teachers were good. I understood what I was taught. Still, even today I eat too much.

Thats my fault not theirs

no, i sold candy on the bus at school and sometimes sold my dessert that my mom packed. kids are more entreprenurial than you think (or maybe you know since you teach). kids will find a way, making this banning meaningless and a mere feel-good token. it's so the principal can stoke his ego about how he's helping the kiddies where, as you said, they're gonna get it anyway.

the degredation of phys ed in this country is common knowledge, not merely based on my adectodal experience.

garb, 60k and summers off sounds good to me too. In reality, it isnt like that. Try florida where you start with 33k and have to squeek out a life with that.

we have to look at the BIGpicture, not just the best and most extreme examples

you act like there is a Vat of candy or ice cream in cafeteria,,this is whats odd about all of this..

isnt there supervision of food in cafeteria,,handed out? its not a buffet??

as far as vending machines,,i can see making them healthier as there is no supervision,,but greenwich story was about banning in cafeteria,,,

come on,,is there a ice cream river in there??? pretty easy to monitor and hard to see how a kid could eat and eat in a cafeteria environremnt where they have to procure from a attendant and pay to boot...

POTW

maybe we should term "freedom of eats" as a free speech issue-- surely if a student wanted to only eat free range chicken to protest animal cruelty and the school tried to stop them the ACLU would be banging the doors down. i want my kid to eat ice cream as an expression of his free choice to put what he wants in his own body. FREE EATERS UNITE!
