Hey Al, I'm actually going through the Panama Canal at this very moment (on a cruise). Not sure I can make the Miami game since it is Monday night (probably going to NO the week before). I still get regularly contacted for group tickets though, so if you guys want me to sign up for a block just let me know. I will be back home next Thursday.

Sheraton Yankee Clipper to undergo renovations, laying off 176 employees in June

The Sheraton Yankee Clipper, a landmark hotel on Fort Lauderdale beach, is closing June 1 to undergo a multimillion dollar face lift and interior upgrade, management said Wednesday.

The hotel, operated by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., will be laying off 176 of its employees on June 30.

Those workers can reapply for jobs when the hotel reopens in January, but employment isn't guaranteed, said Amaury Piedra, general manager for the Westin Beach Resort Fort Lauderdale and the Yankee Clipper.

In the meantime, laid off workers will be given first option to apply for open positions in other Starwood hotels and resorts, he said.

The 500-room Yankee Clipper will get major upgrades to its interior and exterior.

The hotel will have 200 to 250 employees when it reopens and possibly a new name, though decisions are pending on any brand change, Piedra said.

Last June, the Clipper's sister hotel, the Sheraton Yankee Trader underwent renovations estimated then at about $65 million. The Trader reopened in March as the Westin Beach Resort.

The Clipper, which is located at 1140 Seabreeze Blvd., is owned by Connecticut-based Starwood Capital Group, a private investment firm, which bought the hotel from the Gill family in 2005.

According to the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, the Clipper was built in 1955 and designed by Miami architect M. Tony Sherman who also designed the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas.

Judy and I already booked, I will let you know what they do as far as refunds, credits (I hope not) or whatever. A few years back we stayed at the Yankee Trader, now a Westin (mentioned in the article). It is walking distance to everything, the Cabana, Beach Place...We will check there and let you know..

I met him after he almost hit me as he was getting thrown into Bourbon Street out of one of the Bars . The Cab Driver was telling me back then he had never seen so many opposing fans there for a game and that was 2 weeks after 9/11 when everyone was affraid to fly, this time should be really packed with JET fans...

Al, I called and was told they are moving the reservations from the Clipper to the Westin, which is fine with me, might be a little closer to the bars anyway.

great, Im sure that is where we will end up also

This is the Hotel we used to stay in each year I went down for the game ,this is the Hotel with Shula`s Rest. in it ,I would always go into the Rest. the night before the game wearing my JET jersey and order the MAHI-MAHI .

So now we should call and book rooms at The Westin, correct Al? I was going to call sometime in the next few weeks.

That is correct Joe. It is actually a nicer place simply because it is newer. It is in a more central location but still walking distance to the infamous "BAHIA CABANA"

Judy just forwarded me an e-mail from the Clipper:

The Clipper is moving all reservations to the Trader and will be contacting everyone via phone or email to let them know. It should be at the same price we were paying. I think around $140 per night. I went on Priceline and it says $159

We booked a couple weeks ago, I don't know what the going rate is now, you will just have to call and see

All is good !!!!

The Westin is The Trader?

Yes, they changed the name when they re-did it a few years ago. As Chris said that is where we used to stay every year but moved to The Clipper when they shut down for renovations...
