Ex-Broncos coach McDaniels picked to oversee Rams' offense

ST. LOUIS -- The Rams on Tuesday hired former

Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels as their offensive coordinator.

McDaniels, 34, replaces Pat Shurmur, who was hired last week to be the Cleveland Browns' head coach.

"We are happy to announce that Josh will be a part of our staff," Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said in a statement released by the team. "I've always recognized that he is one of the top offensive minds in the NFL. We think he is a great addition to our organization."

The Rams scheduled news conferences Wednesday for Spagnuolo and McDaniels, the latter by telephone.

McDaniels parlayed success as an offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots into his first top job and at age 32 was the NFL's youngest head coach in 2009. He favors the spread offense, run by quarterback Sam Bradford in college at Oklahoma.

Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick in the last draft, broke several of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning's NFL rookie records last season.

McDaniels was let go Dec. 6 by the Broncos, with four games left in the regular season and in the midst of the franchise's worst slump in four decades. After winning his first six games of McDaniels' rookie season, the Broncos lost 17 of the last 22, and the team had several issues off the field.

McDaniels was fined $50,000 by the NFL after a videographer violated league rules by videotaping a San Francisco 49erspractice in London in October.

The Rams made a six-victory improvement this past season under Spagnuolo, who will enter his third season as head coach.

McDaniels was with the Patriots from 2001 to 2008. He was a personnel assistant on the '01 team that beat the Rams in the Super Bowl. New England won two more Super Bowls and totaled four AFC championships in McDaniels' eight seasons with the franchise, the last three with him as offensive coordinator.

In McDaniels' first season with the Broncos, Kyle Orton set career highs for passes, completions, passing yards, touchdown passes and passer rating while tying his career low for interceptions. Orton's 3,802 passing yards were the sixth-highest for a season in Broncos history.

The Broncos were seventh in the NFL in passing yards and 13th in total offense this season.

Well so much for that dream. I've decided I will become a mindless Schotty supporter now. Hopefully he does turn out to be the bestest OC ever. Or at least...within the top half of the NFL.

Ha. You were the first person I thought of when I read the thread title.

Just remember that, particularly with the spread, good offense does not necessary = winning games. There is a reason that teams with monster defenses generally have dull grinding offenses.

For McDaniel's sake, this makes more sense. The Jets job is not a place to make your name. No matter how well he performed here he would have a tough time matching Schotty's success over the last two seasons (in wins wise guy) and there is a good chance that Sanchez might regress if you start installing a heavy spread offense. If he took over and the Jets don't make it out of the first round he'd be an easy scapegoat. The Rams should be a nice place to do what he wants with a good young QB and RB in a weak division, though that didn't help him much in the AFC west.

lol @ two Jets fans bickering with the Jets in the AFC Championship Game 4 days from now.

Try trash-talking the Steelers instead, with their turnstile OL, their scumbag LB who launches himself helmet-first and then laughably declares that's how everyone's trained to tackle from day one, their sedated mannequin HC, their double-rapist (just the ones we know of) QB, and their douchebag veteran WR and his nyah nyah nyah smirk everyone in the country wants to smack off his smug face. Whether he's a good guy or not, I can't wait until Polamalu starts showing the signs of male-pattern baldness and has to do a comb-over with that enormous, dandruffy birds-nest of his.

Screw the Steelers, screw their ugly inbred fanbase, and screw their owner who turned the HC hiring process into a sham joke everyone's in on.

Worst franchise in professional sports after the Patriots.

I plead with you to make this post into it's very own, new thread. Thank you.

I just hope Tebow keeps the job in Denver but if not the JETS ne ed to scoop him up

Brilliant idea, lets reward our 2nd year 24 year old QB who's taken us to 2 AFC championships in his first two seasons with ridiculously mature clutch play when we need it most by signing a terribly overrated distraction to back him up next season. Superb thinking there.

Your Giants on the other hand....they probably could use Tebow because She-li is looking more and more like dog crap by the minute.
