So whats up with McElroy?

Jets placed QB Greg McElroy (thumb surgery) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The seventh-rounder was going to redshirt behind Mark Sanchez and Mark Brunell this season as the No. 3 QB. McElroy will do his learning on I.R. instead since he won't be able to throw for a couple of months. He showed enough in preseason action to believe he can be the long-term backup to Sanchez. Kevin, the guy we had last year or whatever and cut after we drafted mdelroy. something like that anyway

Kevin O'Connell is a great physical prospect out of San Diego State. He was another of those great draft picks of the Pats. 3rd rounder. The Jets obviously liked him coming out and certainly would have taken him in the 5th instead of Ainge. He looked good in his first camp there, but bad his second camp and got buried behind O'Connell and Cassell got the run when Brady went down. He was cut at the end of camp in 2009 after he threw a couple of picks in a preseason game. The Jets put in a waiver claim, but the Lions got him and the Jets traded a 7th for him. In 2010 he looked good early in camp according to reports and Ecurb, but much worse as camp went on. The team cut him and they found out that he had a torn labrum. They signed him to a two year deal, but ended up cutting him in July. He was picked up by the Dolphins and cut after the last preseason game. The Jets picked him up after McElroy went down and it was a good move because unless they wanted to call up Patrick Ramsey this is the available guy that knows the system the best.
