When the Jets cut defensive end Claude Davis and cornerback Cliff Harris on Tuesday, it didn’t even seem worth mentioning: Both were marginal players cut at a time in the offseason when multiple marginal players get cut every day in the NFL.

But now we know why they were cut: As first reported by ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, both Davis and Harris were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana on Monday in Morristown, New Jersey.

According to a release from the Morristown Police Department, an officer observed that a parked 2013 Chevy Tahoe SUV appeared to be filled with smoke. The officer approached, the driver rolled down his window, and the officer smelled marijuana. Two of the three occupants were Davis and Harris, and they were both arrested and charged with marijuana possession.

The third occupant, Daniel Godfrey, was found to be in possession of a handgun loaded with a single hollow-point round as well as items that suggested he intended to distribute marijuana. Godfrey was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and unlawful possession of a weapon. He is being held on $50,000 bail.

Both Harris (pictured during his time in the Eagles’ training camp last year) and Davis signed with the Jets this offseason. Neither has ever played in an NFL regular-season game.

Ex-Jet Cliff Harris arrested for second time in a week

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 6, 2013, 1:12 PM EDT

AP
Last week we mentioned that the Jets cut cornerback Cliff Harris after he was arrested for possession of marijuana in New Jersey. After the Jets sent him packing, Harris went back home to Oregon — where he was arrested again.

Portland TV station KGW reports that Harris was arrested on Friday night for domestic harassment after witnesses said they saw him pushing his girlfriend at a Buffalo Wild Wings.

Harris (pictured during his time in the Eagles’ training camp last year) has a long history of trouble with the law. He was kicked off Oregon’s football team in 2011 after a string of off-field incidents that included marijuana possession and several traffic offenses. He may be best remembered for an incident in which he was pulled over for driving 118 miles an hour while his license was suspended. The officer who pulled Harris over reported that he smelled marijuana in Harris’s car, and when he asked Harris who had the pot, Harris answered, “We smoked it all.”

It’s a shame that those incidents are what Harris is best known for, because he has undeniable talent: As a sophomore in 2010 he was an outstanding player on both defense and special teams, leading the NCAA in both passes defensed and punt return touchdowns. But it appears that Harris is intent on letting his talent go to waste, and at this point, it’s hard to see any NFL team giving him another chance.

Report: Ex-New York Jet Cliff Harris arrested again

We don't normally post about arrests from players not in the NFL. But Cliff Harris, released by the New York Jets just over a week ago, has been in the news too much to ignore.

Harris was arrested for the third time in nine days, according to KPTV in Oregon. This time he was arrested on the charge of failing to appear. Harris was on his way to an 8:30 a.m. court appearance when he was stopped for speeding -- an infraction that wound up making him more than 90 minutes late.

Hillsboro, Ore., police arrested Harris on Friday night on charges of domestic harassment. He reportedly had an argument and fight with his girlfriend in the parking lot of a Buffalo Wild Wings. The Jets cut Harris last week after he was arrested in New Jersey on possession of marijuana charges. It's hard to imagine the University of Oregon product ever getting another shot in the NFL.
