Gronk's having back surgery

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will undergo back surgery in mid-to-late June, a source tells ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Gronkowski, who is not expected to be ready for the start of training camp in late July, will have the procedure performed by noted spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins.

It's yet another trip to the operating room for Gronkowski, who recently underwent a fourth surgery on his broken forearm.

As for the back injury, Gronkowski recently underwent an MRI to check on a disk issue from last season, according to ESPN and media reports. The disk injury is not related to the same one that required a procedure in 2009, according to a source.

With Gronkowski sidelined, tight end Jake Ballard has looked sharp in each of the media-accessible OTAs, showing limited signs of restriction nearly 16 months after originally suffering a knee injury. He's shown reliable hands to go along with his big frame (6-foot-6, 275 pounds), and he should make a difference as a blocker when the pads come on.

The burly tight end said that while he's working toward being back to 100 percent, he's staying within the parameters of what the team's medical and coaching staff have laid out for him while he's on thefield.

"I'm doing my best I can to be 100 percent, and I'm doing as much as I can, as much as they're allowing me to do out here," Ballard said. "When I'm out here I feel like I'm putting in good work and getting better."

Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter and ESPNBoston.com's Field Yates was used in this report.

The same Jake Ballard that Pats stole from Giants while they were waiting for him to clear waivers for Injured Reserve list? D*cks.

In all seriousness, I absolutely hate the Patriots will all my heart, BUT if there was one Patriot I hate a little less than the rest its Gronk. I hope his back injury isn't the permanent type and he's able to compete again.

I hope good things happen to all the Patriots; as soon as they become ex-Patriots.

I lived in South Boston for 2 years. I hate the Pat's. I also lived in Tucson for 3 years and one of my best friends who was an athlete for the university said he was the most genuinely friendly guy ever, nice to everyone. I feel bad for him he went to a dick bag team cause him being on the field up by 30 on the Colts is when he got hurt and this all started. That being said, still a Pat..... **** him till he's not

Man. Imagine if he was a Jet. He'd have 400 yards from Sanchez throwing him the ball.

lol, I guess I don't feel that bad for him signing with the Pat's, they gave him enough money at this point to retire and live the kind of simpleton party life I enjoy forever

You guys where the ones pussy hurt about the SB, he was an UDFA. Eli makes all these TE's look good, I'm sure he'll be fine with Brady but it wasn't some coup. They got the Lombardi(twice) and you got Jake Ballard. Congrats, you sound like a Jets fan.

Let me try and explain my dis-hate for Gronk. It all started when the Pats lost the SB to the Giants the first time around (ha) and that same night Gronk was on video Gronk stomping on stage at a night club. I said to myself, "there is something Belichick is probably pissin fire over right now." That thought alone made me laugh. Then he gave props to the Jets defense on ESPN which was mighty nice of him, because truth be told he was sh*tting all over us up to that point. THEN, he did the ultimate backslap to Belichick by doing what ever the hell he wanted on his trip to Vegas- including wrestling and falling on his healing broken arm. Please picture Belichick's face right now and tell me you don't like Gronk just a tiny bit more.

So all-in-all, I don't hate Gronk because he's the anti-Belichick and he's too good to be released from New England- like all the other players that didn't fit the Patriot Way. Until he's not talented enough, he will be a pain in Belichick's ass and I almost don't hate him for it.

On a side note: I don't want the Jets to take over the division when the Pats are on their way down. I want the Jets to dominate while Brady only wets the bed sometimes, and Gronk is completely healthy.

That had pretty good numbers.

I am not saying he is a second coming of Gronk, but he has shown potential.  He had 38 catches for over 600 yards and was a starter in the Superbowl for the Champions.

The Patriots gambled (keeping him on the roster) when the Giants tried to be slick.  It might not mean anything, but it was worth the shot.  Especially, if he shows the potential he showed in 2011.  The Patriots will be less inclined to speed Gronk back.
