Offensive lines win championships, too... here in 2014.

I wonder if this is legit, or if we are really planning to keep neglecting our OL?

Oday Aboushi - T - Jets

ESPN New York reports the Jets hope either second-year OLs Oday Aboushi or William Campbell can step into a starting role at guard in 2014.

That would seem to be awfully wishful thinking on the Jets' part. Aboushi was a fifth-round pick out of Virginia, where he played left tackle, last April, while Campbell played defensive tackle at Michigan and was converted to offensive line after being drafted in the sixth round. Neither played a single snap in 2013. The Jets would be better off re-signing RG Willie Colon to another one-year deal.

The Jets have been drafting and signing OL for years.  So the theory they neglect it is just wrong.   it's a combo of having crappy QBs, no WRs, RBs who aren't good, and so on.      Look around the NFL, how many teams have two first rounders, a 3rd rounder, another 2nd rounder on the bench and so on on their OL?   I mean the Broncos had a damn practice squad guy starting the super bowl as their center.

If you look at the Seahawks OL, it's not you're typical great OL.    And they have a lot of depth.  It's not about finding some Top First rounder, it's about building a team.

I mean look at Seattle's OL.  On paper, they sure aren't filled with top talent from top to bottom.  But they made it work.  That's what the Jets need to do.  They can't keep picking guys like Ducasse and Winters in the first three rounds and so on who never work out.  They can't keep picking guys like DBrick in the top 5 picks who take years to become any good, have a couple of good years, and then suddenly stinks and looks old too soon.

Again on Paper,   the Jets have Mangold & DBrick, two first round pro bowl players.  They have Winters a 3rd round pick.  They have Ducasse , a 2nd round pick.   The Jets should have a decent enough OL compared to what most other teams have around the NFL.    Assuming it's all about the OL and not the crappy QB and crappy WR/TE and crappy RBs is missing the point as well.

How does having Ducasse make the Oline any better? Looking at Seattle they have done well with some late round picks, though there are still two first rounders and a second rounder on that line. They've done better at drafting and developing players (Sherman anyone?) than we have. The fact that we have spent a second and a third rounder since we picked up Dbrick and Mangold in the first draft of the Mangini era, doesn't mean we've invested adequately. Especially when you consider Vlad is an outright bust that was beaten out by a sixth round Slauson. We have three Oline spots that can be upgraded. At least one second or third rd pick should be dedicated to doing that. The line is long overdue for an overhaul.

My point is on paper the Jets should have as good a line as the Seahawks.   But they don't.  The Seahawks didn't go out and sign a bunch of big name free agent OL and they didn't draft OL in the first and second rounds every year.     The Jets need to draft well, sign undrafted players well, and develop those players well.   The Jets OL should be damn good considering how many players they've taken and signed over the years, but they haven't been.   That's the problem.

So to me, it's not about going out and signing some big name OL free agent or drafting some OL in the first round this year,  the reality is if their QB & WRs stink and their RB would'nt start on most other teams, it's not going to make them a winner.

The Jets had a pretty good OL back in 2009 and their offense still sucked.
