Cary Williams

I've done a 180 on this one.  Thought he'd be a terrible signing but watched some of his play this weekend and looked at PFF numbers.  He's actually in the same ballpark as Kareem Jackson and the fact that Seattle is bringing him in for a visit with their secondary speaks for itself.

In trying to address one of the Jets’ biggest needs, the cornerback position, Jets general manager Mike Maccaganan and Head Coach Todd Bowles are rumored to have serious interest in adding recently released Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Cary Williams.

Despite having one of the worst defensive backfields in the NFL, the Eagles were willing to part ways with the inconsistent Williams and his $8 million cap charge for the upcoming season.

The 6′ 1”/185lb Washburn University product got more heat than he deserved as the Eagles secondary surrendered 30 touchdowns and ranked 31st in the NFL allowing 264.9 passing yards per game.  As alarming as those  number may be to some, Williams’ game-by-game breakdown shows that he wasn’t the main culprit in the Eagles defensive breakdowns.

According to PFF.com, Williams turned in four sub-par performances on the season, while grading out as average to above average in the Eagle’s other twelve games.

While Williams wasn’t Pro-Bowl material, he managed to hold opposing QB’s to an 89.5 QBR which would have ranked him second on the Jets last year.  By comparison the only Jets cornerback to hold quarterbacks below a rating of 106.0 was undrafted rookie free agent Marcus Williams who posted an even better number than Williams at 88.1.

Williams most impressive stat was his 11.8 snaps per reception which ranks him 15th out of 73 eligible cornerbacks who played a minimum of 50% of their team’s snaps.

One factor worth considering that will be overlooked by most is that as a result of Chip Kelly’s up-tempo offense, Williams was on the field for 660 plays this year and 705 plays in 2013, more than any other cornerback in the NFL.

After visiting with both the Seahawks and Jets, Williams reportedly came away impressed with the Jets brass but already has visits scheduled with the Ravens and Titans still to come.

I have no specific knowledge of Williams play lately, but I think you have to be careful of those PFF numbers.  When your team is getting scorched, getting average numbers does not mean much to me.  There is no reason to go at him if the other guys are getting torched.  Interesting in that he is an older guy that has not really broken out.  He already visited with the Seahawks and is supposedly heading to the Titans today.  I wonder how much he'll get.

Yeah, I initially thought he'd be terrible and I plan on watching some more of him this week but from the games I checked out this weekend he looked better than I expected him to.  When he got beat a couple times it was mid/late fourth quarter and we all know Kelly's rep of running the hell out of his guys all week in practice and then expecting them to play more snaps than any team in the league on game day.  I'm not saying he's a phenom, but he looks a lot better than I thought he would.

And Chip doesn't want him when his secondary is in disarray? They spent a lot on Maxwell and you would think they would retain anything that resembles talent.

That was my initial thought, but perhaps they knew they were going to give Maxwell a kings ransom and didn't want that much tied up in the CB position?  I wanted nothing to do with him until I looked a little closer at his numbers and some game film.  I'm gonna take a look at some more tonight in games where his numbers were bad to see what was up.  Looks like his two worst games were vs. Washington which means he was probably getting smoked by D. Jackson.  The fact that Seattle thought enough of him to bring him in was a good thing too IMO.

I looked up his record.  He won a ring with the Ravens, but he was getting lit up that year.  The Eagles signed him as part of the reboot after their super secondary failed.  They went for WIlliams, Kenny Phillips and Patrick Chung.  That didn't work either.  A bunch of people are high on him though - rotoworld mentions Pagano being a big fan.  His PFF numbers for 2013 were apparently not so kind.

I don't understand the fascination with PFF, How can they rate players when they don't know what the def call was? is a pass def on a 5yd route the same as he was beaten and recovered.  Who is the corner covering, who is the qb throwing the ball, what kind of rush pressure was applied?

These guys got legitimized when Collingsworth purchased a share and 5 or 6 teams use them for snap counts and down and distance studies (which they supposed to do very well)

He seems to be liked by the right guys.  Ravens, Bowles, Pagano, Seahawks.  I assume they are hoping his age keeps his price down too.

This is the cat who criticize Kelly's practice regiment and how he doesn't allow his defense to rest base on how fast he runs offensive plays.

Williams should have kept that behind closed doors but there's definitely something to it.  I heard Dick Vermeil during the pre-season and he said after visiting Philly camp that one Chip Kelly practice is like two practices he used to run.  So after a week of that, defensive players get to play more snaps than any team in the NFL.  I think it's a big reason Chip will never win.  Time may prove me wrong, but I don't see a defense putting in all that work and keeping it together for a playoff run.

Exactly...that was a big reason I decided to look a little closer.  I think that much like a lot of Philly fans, I saw him as terrible based on "Guilt by association" because as a group the secondary was bad but Williams wasn't the issue.

He's a bold guy, and I like his dislike for the Pats.

I have some strong ties to Philly and watched about 12 games last year being my NFL Ticket partner is a die hard. He's a hard nosed physical corner and good at disrupting the wr at the los.

Williams would be a good pick up if we signed a clear cut # 1 (Revis).

If Williams is your number 1, he get beat more often then liked.

Chip is going all Mangini on his roster, doesn't want certain personality types.

Is he just a guy they feel they can get or a guy they want?  I will trust Bowles on this.  He was a D back and coaches defense.  I think they like him.o  They could have Cro whenever they want.  If this guy is worse than Cro, as some suggest, why would they just not sign Cro?

Reportedly seven other teams interested...he may not even be a guy they can get.
