Are we expecting too much this year?

This board six months ago was happy with the hiring of Bowles and Mccagnan, their first draft, and most of the FA signings.  We knew what the last regime did to this team.  It was talked about in great lengths that it would take some time for this new regime to rebuild this franchise.  But after winning our fifth game of the season, one more already than last year and we are only half-way through the season, their seems to be GRAVE concerns about our season.  There have been some suggestions that this team, three weeks ago before the NE game, this team was a top five team in the league.

I have been thinking this season has gone better than expected at the half-way point, but I do not think we are even going to make the playoffs this year, and never thought we would anyway.  This regime is going to get three years.  I do not see this one turning into the Idzik disaster.  It has put together a competitive team for the next three years in some of the signings, but it will need three years of drafts to completely turn it around and make for a bright future.

If you look at this year's draft, I believe we have a home-run in Leonard Williams, a potential OLB pass-specialist in Mauldin, and we MIGHT have a solid #2 receiver in Devin Smith. We might even have either a franchise QB or a solid back-up in Petty.  Only time will tell.  IF over the next two drafts we can get 6 more solid NFL players, utilize free agency, and build on some of the previous young talent (Richardson, Pryor, Marcus Williams, Amaro, Harrison, Davis, Barnes etc), then we could be set for a decade or so.

The draft is always a woulda-coulda-shoulda event that leaves arm-chair GM's scratching their collective heads at their teams decisions, but sometimes it is reasonable to look-back and see what was EASILY obtainable for your franchise, and criticize how a regime screwed up the most important means for a franchise to build on long-term success.

Imagine, substitute Chandler Jones(1-21) for Quinton Coples (1-16), Stephen Hill (2-43) for Alshon Jeffrey (2-45) in 20012.

Dee Millner (1-9) for Desmond Trufant (1-22), Geno Smith (2-39) for Robert Woods (2-41) Brian Winters (3-72) for  Terron Armstead (3-75) in 2013.

Dexter McDougle (3-80) for Gabe Jackson (3-81), Shaq Evans (4-115) for Martavis Bryant (4-118) in 2014.

While that doesn't even begin to explain the disaster that was the 2014 draft, this was easily obtainable.  You have your pass-rusher in Jones, a #1, #2, AND #3 receiver, a CB who would have made the Cromartie signing not necessary, a starting RT, and a starting G.

3 consecutive years of great drafts can set a franchise up for a decade of success.  While I remain hopeful for a playoff spot this year, I really am not as concerned with short-term success as much as long-term success in the draft.  We do that, and we will have something to talk about week-in and week-out on this board for at least a solid decade or more.

Expectations flow during a season especially with individual coaches and players.  My expectations have not changed much, best case for me was the team battling for a playoff spot half way or further into the season.  We are doing that, the offense has exceeded my expectations, the defense has not met them.  Special teams stinks.

Expectations change.

At 5-3, I expect this team to make the playoffs.  There is really no reason they shouldnt.  They've got the talent.  A good enough QB.  The AFC sucks outside of 2 teams. So why not?

I dont expect them to do much in the playoffs.  But if come week 16 and the Jets are firing on all cylinders, well, expectations just might change again.

Unfortunately, none of this matters because the Pats are about to win back to back Super Bowls.  But I'm enjoying the season nonetheless and want to see this team take it as far as they can.

Classic Jets fan:

Preseason-We suck, we're lucky to win 6 games, maybe 8-8 if we're really lucky all season.  The talent sucks.

Midseason with 5-3 record-We suck, we should totally be 7-1, maybe 8-0 if Bowles didn't suck so much.  I can't believe how much we underperform with all this talent!

We are a good, but not great team.  We don't have a lot of depth and it is hurting us.  Also, we have a rookie HC and it shows sometimes (overall I am happy with the choice, but these are the things we need to deal with when having a rookie HC).  With our schedule we should win 9-11 games depending on luck/injury.  We have a good shot at the playoffs, but are unlikely to make a big push - but who knows.

Either way, they are much more fun than that last few years and we see signs of a productive future.  Only time will tell.  Never thought we had a good shot at the division this year (unless Tom was suspended)

Perhaps you should re-read the post.  Nowhere did I say that.  I never expected more than 6 wins this year, given the state of our drafting situation.  I am still not thinking we are making the playoffs, and was totally okay with it, so long as this team fixes its biggest problem in decades: Learning how to consistently draft.

Not sure how you determined my post was a SOJ....but, whatever rocks your boat.

That's why I didn't quote you buddy.  I was in agreement with you, merely mocking what's going on in most other threads.  You may lower your weapons now lol.

The Jets need to repair the offensive line with a couple high draft picks. These guys are getting old and injury prone. Can't count on Mangold or Colon and Ferguson never was a great run blocker. Carpenter has been just ok as has Giacomini. No more sixth or seventh round "flyers" on project OL, we need a couple of studs that can give Ivory some running room. A safety who can cover in the deep middle would be great too.
