This is his year to watch Derek Carr( how he prepares, and command the leadership of the team).  He has to become a sponge , and try to absorb the knowledge Carr has in the offense. ( Qb meetings with the Qb coach discussing what Carr did right and wrong- he has to absorb that knowledge to his game.  Watch countless film to improve his knowledge of the game, and it hone his craft as an NFL Qb.

Next year Connor Cook will be the backup to Derek Carr , and it his job to make sure he prepared himself mentally , and Physically to handle that job.    This year was the preparation part, and next year will be the test.

Ok we get it you have a Franchise QB. Barring injury and late season blowout Win. Cook Never see's the field like ever. So it's moot, he stays his 4 years at the Raiders and that's it.

Let's see, you're a young player trying hard to make it in his league and your head coach tells the world he thinks so little of your abilities as a player, the only way you'll see the field is if something terrible happens.

That's a non-answer.  I'm disappointed (but not shocked) that none of the reporters had the balls to ask the follow-up question:  "Why isn't he the # 2 then?"
