It’s bad when brad smith is top 5

I actually thought Brad Smith wasn't a bad QB - as he never got a real shot at being the QB: they always used him for gadget plays, ignoring the fact that he had a very productive college career as a dual threat quarterback. But in those days, they didn't believe in that kind of heresy: the coaching mentality then thought that pocket passers were the only way to go.

Pretty much every qb drafted has red flags. The job of the regime drafting a QB is to understand the red flags, understand if they can develop the player to overcome those red flags, or work around those red flags, and understand if they fit into what they want to do with the offense. The last QB I remember being drafted without red flags was Luck, the once in a generation QB. Mahomes had plenty of red flags, but Andy Reid knows what he is doing, Saleh, yeah, not so much.....

Coaches can only do so much. The player has to be willing and able to learn from his mistakes. There isn't much a coach can do about a QB  who can't complete the most basic throws to RBs out of the backfield, or make accurate passes on quick on WRs screens. Coaches aren't there to teach fundamentals at the NFL level. Like within any professional field, you are expected to have a certain level of knowledge about your job when you start. The staff literally put Zach 's personal QB coach on staff to make him more comfortable and that didn't help. The man was a mediocre QB before the COVID season, and has been even worse after when he stepped up in level of competition. You don't need to be a genius to see that he simply wasn't good to begin with

Does anyone know when Geno finally started to play good football?  Would any team have held on to him for that long, however long that took?  But damn, he's the only what if in the entire group not named Chad.

The Chargers and Giants each rostered and moved on from Geno Smith before Seattle added him.  Even when Seattle had him and moved on from Russ, they had Drew Lock there as their “hedge”, whom Geno had to beat out for the QB1 job.

No one believed in Geno Smith as a lock starter, even Seattle.  And even now, Geno is little more than an average ish starter in the league, over a decade after being drafted.

But yeah some here still think “development” is the bigger issue with Jets’ draft selections, lol.

You are quite possibly the best  example of the dunning-Kruger effect of all time, congrats on that

At this point, we should just trade for Sean Clifford. It is an institutional failure for the Jets and landing a QB.

Take a look at what Green Bay has done from say 1991 on. They traded a first for Brett Favre 1992. Look at all the QBs they have “hit” on. Obviously, there are stars, Jag starters and backups.

We cannot even seemingly draft a quality backup.

Yeah but look at their draft in 1981.  They took a punter in round 3 for crying out loud!

1981

  • Rich Campbell | Round 1, Pick 6
    QB, California
  • Gary Lewis | Round 2, Pick 35
    TE, Texas-Arlington
  • Ray Stachowicz | Round 3, Pick 62
    P, Michigan State
  • Richard Turner | Round 4, Pick 105
    NT, Oklahoma
  • Byron Braggs | Round 5, Pick 117
    DE, Alabama
  • Bill Whitaker | Round 7, Pick 172
    DB, Missouri
  • Larry Werts | Round 8, Pick 200
    LB, Jackson State
  • Tim Huffman | Round 9, Pick 227
    G, Notre Dame
  • Nickie Hall | Round 10, Pick 255
    QB, Tulane
  • Forrest Valora | Round 11, Pick 282
    LB, Oklahoma
  • Cliff Lewis | Round 12, Pick 311
    LB, Southern Miss

Geno just matured as a person in Seattle. A lot of his issues here and with the giants was immaturity.

It’s wierd. His best season with the jets was actually his rookie season when he was throwing to trash like Chaz Schilens yet still somehow got us to 8-8
