So New York is a Mets town you say?

I really do hate to bring more statistical data to the table that proves the point I was making a couple of weeks ago based on factual information as opposed to an emotionally driven opinion, but here you go and let the spin begin.

Who ya gonna love? Yankees!

BLOOMBERG NEWS

New York is still the Yankees' town, even though the Mets have Major League Baseball's best record this season, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.

Fifty-two percent of respondents said they are fans of the 26-time World Series-champion Yankees, while 38 percent identified themselves as Mets fans, according to the poll released today by the Hamden, Connecticut, school.

“People tend to go with the winner, and the Yankees have been winners,” Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac Polling Institute, said in a telephone interview.

The Yankees, with a 6-6 record this season, have reigned in the poll for the roughly 20 years it’s been conducted by Quinnipiac, Carroll said. He can’t remember any year the Mets, who’ve won two World Series, topped the Yankees in the survey.

The Mets (9-2) are off to the best start in franchise history and have a four-game lead over Atlanta in the National League East heading into a three-game series against the Braves that begins tonight at Shea Stadium.

“With the Mets winning, fans are fickle,” Carroll said. “Give them a good year and they could do better next year.” If the New York teams were to face each other in the World Series, repeating the Subway Series from 2000 that the Yankees won in five games, 48 percent of those polled said they would cheer for the Yankees, while 36 percent would root for the Mets.

Women prefer the Yankees to the Mets by a margin of 52 to 30 percent, while men root for the Mets over the Yankees 43 to 41 percent, the poll found.

Favorite Players Among Yankees fans, 43 percent named shortstop Derek Jeter as their favorite player, followed by 8 percent for third baseman Alex Rodriguez and 4 percent for outfielder Bernie Williams.

Third baseman David Wright and pitcher Pedro Martinez are Mets fans’ favorites, each getting 10 percent. Former catcher Mike Piazza, who signed with the San Diego Padres after seven- plus seasons in New York, was still a favorite of 9 percent of Mets fans.

The poll of 1,316 registered voters in New York City between April 4 and April 10 has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

Yankees had 51,000 plus last Thursday afternoon against the Royals.

Tell us what the attendance is tonight-the Braves, a night when a lot of kids have off this week, good weather, the Yanks are off, and there's no big hockey or NBA games nor playoffs locally. If they don't top 40,000 tonight it's all BS.

Oh snap you were just a baby the last time the Mets won it all. That must suck!!! I would hate to know what that felt like.

Umm....Max? You do know what that feels like. You were an infant when the Jets won the title, right? A 30lb. infant, but an infant nonetheless.

By the way, if anyone listens to WFAN-660 AM in the NYC area, you would DEFINATELY think it's a Mets town.

So now you've seen the light....Yankees over Mets is the bottom line. If you don't like women, that doesn't mean they don't count as fans.

Women do not count as fans.

they will root for whoever is winning.

Apparently not because they didn't tip the scales in the Mets' favor back when they were champs.

And guys don't do the same thing? There are quite a few male Met fans who were non-existent in the baseball forum last year but after picking up a few free agents, lo and behold, Mets fans all over the baseball forum.

Women root for them cause they want to bang Jeter. When he retires, it will be the last nail in the yankees coffin.

Right, because Jeter was around in '86 when the Mets won it right? And thats why the Yankees have finished on top of the Mets for the 20 years the poll has been done?

Just because the results of the poll have been the same for 20 years doesn't mean that it is due to the same thing. Maybe the Jeter craze among NY women has covered up the gradual rise in mets popularity over the last 10 years. I'd guess that if you took out all of the women who are huge Jeter fans and vote for the yankees solely on that along with all the ones who root for the one thats winning, the results would be a lot closer. Maybe if the Mets win, this season will be enough to put the them over the top.

this poll is a huge joke by the way... firstly it's only 13 hundred people... second of all it was done on registered voters... probably from manhattan or something. I'm not a registered voter...

I doubt all the mets fans out in queens were a part of this.

36,000 for Pedro's 200th career win against the Braves on a nice night with nothing else going on during the best start in Mets history is pretty weak. Spare us any more of this crap.

Damn....only 36,000? And it probably would have been more in the 30,000 if Pedro wasn't going for #200.

Don't worry, just as we've seen the bandwagon Mets fans appear on this board from out of nowhere, they're start showing up at Shea as the season goes on.

EXCUSE ME?????????????????

Passover Holiday, Easter Holiday, schools are closed, lots of folks off from work, clear evening, Pedro going for #200, your long-time closest Divisional rival, your nemisis, et al. And only 36,000?

Yankees - Boston would have been 56,000+ under the same conditions. Don't believe me? Check out the attendance for Yankees-Boston the past many years.

And NY is a Mets town? Baloney. NY was a NL town when the Dodgers-Giants played here.

Not now.

A Yankmee fan complaining about attendance at Shea? Lemme splain sumthin young man. Back in the days when both teams sucked(yes, that was a long time ago), the Mets always outdrew the Yanks. It was sure fun to be at Shea last nite, despite the wind.

36,000 large at Shea yesterday. What an absolute friggin joke. To even imply that a fan base that bad "rules" a city where the Yankees draw more against the Kansas City friggin Royals. The proof is in the pudding my friend. Live in denial all you like, but the numbers don't lie. 36,000...what a joke.
