The New York Yankees, adding a possible alternative for their starting rotation, have signed free-agent right-hander Sidney Ponson to a minor-league contract, according to major-league sources.

Ponson, 31, recently was released by the Texas Rangers, who cited his off-field conduct in announcing their initial decision to designate him for assignment.

Ponson, however, pitched well for the Rangers, going 4-1 with a 3.88 ERA in nine starts. This will be his second stint with the Yankees, for whom he was 0-1 with a 10.47 ERA in five appearances in 2006.

The Yankees' No. 1 starter, right-hander Chien-Ming Wang, is expected to be out until September after injuring his right foot last weekend.

Most likely he will not get anywhere. Read the attached link to a Chad Jennings blog. Chad is up to speed with the AAA team. He is really "in-the-know" regarding that team. I bet he is right about Ponson also.

If Texas cuts you, and they are near the bottom in Baseball in Pitching, you are bad. No matter what the reason they "claim" they cut you for.

good move by the yankees, even if he was a pain in the ass in Texas.

if he can pitch, great... if not, cut his ass and you lose nothing...

expect to see him in NY for the Mets/yankee doubleheader next friday.

Of course you're happy about that, who wouldn't when they realize that Ponson is on the mound? This just means that the Mets do have a win in their future... lol

If he does pitch against the mets, he will beat them.

He has pitched well this season... his only problem is he's an assh0le, so he should fit in nicely with the yankees.

His only problem isn't that he's an assh0le, his other problem is that he sucks, so he'd probably fit better with the Mets.

His peripherals are off-the-wall terrible. 1.5+ WHIP and nearly 1:1 K:BB ratio? Sooner or later luck is going to catch up with him. Cashman should know better than this. He should never pitch a game in pinstripes again.

Fixed it

Ponson actually has had good stats this year for the Rangers. I wonder who he pissed off down there in order to get cut like that.

Even without this move I still feel good about the Yankees starting pitching. Dan Geise is pitching tremendous so far (if only the Yankees would give him some f'n run support). And Joba is coming along nicely as a starter.

I don't know how any Yankee fan can feel good about the Yankees at anything. Geise pitched good for his starting debut, and nothing was really his fault. Our whole pitching staff has been lights out lately, but this team cannot hit worth a ****. Bases loaded, none out in the 2nd, and they get no runs. Not even 1 run. They are a pathetic team.
