Waste of 5 years

To develop a QB. That is the loser Jets fans reason for not wanting to draft a great rookie prospect and then let him take the reigns. It's also the reason the Jets don't want to hire an up and coming HC, and would rather stick with a failure.

Matt Ryan, 11-5, in the playoffs, rookie HC.

Joe Flacco, 11-5, in the playoffs, rookie HC.

CP, Jet reject, 11-5, in the playoffs, rookie HC.

It doesn't take 5 years. That's just an excuse you make up when you suck. In 2 more years you'll get fired. Then the next guy either does well or he is also on a 5 year plan.

Ratliff

The loser fanbase and franchise don't want to let him have a chance. There is a danger he develops into a Romo, Bulger, Delhomme or Brady. Can't have that. Just like Leon might be like a Westbrook or a Marshall Faulk. Again, can't have that.

Gotta go with the "safe" choice... **** risk...

Are you serious ? Ratliff ? 2-14 here we come again !

WOuld have been better off giving him a chance this year... either he pulls a cassel and goes 11-5 or tanks... but at least you know what you got... and can move on... wouldnt be in any worse shape... Favre was the safe, money making move,.

This goes back years.

Several years ago when Chad was oft inured, the Jets FO kept him when it was clear he was what he was and New England and Brady were clearly the division best.

After bad seasons in 2005 and 2007, the Jets kept him and could have gone in a different direction. They did not.

However, 2009 is going to KO and who is the Jets' QB? Pending on Brady's health, the AFC East is as open as it has been since 2002. The Jets are in no better shape.

Great post and you can just look at the trends in NFL with the success young QB's are having from playoffs to Super Bowls. The Jets need to spend that high draft pick on a good QB who they can groom (please let the QB be over 5'11" and have a good arm as well). We have wasted enough time, grab the QB then build the team around them. If you get lucky you can rebuild multiple teams around a skilled QB but you need that QB to give your team the best chance to succeed.

Thankfully with Chad gone and Brett probably done the team will need to address the QB position sooner or later.

Awful job by Jets Brass last draft. They knew they did not have a QB of the future on their roster. Gholston instead of Flacco?? Bad job. Terrible.

hindsight is 20/20 if we took Flacco at 6 everyone would have jumped down Mangini and Tannenbaums necks for reaching on a QB after spending a 2nd on Clemens. at the time our defense was the bigger need.

And now the fans and media are screaming for his head, so how did that work out? Who cares about media and fan approval?

A good coach and franchise completely ignores everyone outside the organization and makes the correct move. If it's a stupid move and you're called out for it, it's still a stupid move. If it's a great move and you're called on it, it's still a great move.

Like Mario Williams over Reggie Bush. Same exact situation there. Or Cutler over Leinart.

if its a difference of 2 or 3 picks but Flacco was projected to go in the 2nd round not the first 10 picks

Horse$hit. Jets Management (GM all the way on down) are paid VERY well to make the right decisions.

DEFENSE WAS THE BIGGER NEED....Please. This goes beyond "they picked this guy instead of that guy". We are talking about a franchise that hasnt had a long term answer at QB (maybe Chad) in the last 25 years. And instead of rolling the dice a bit to bring in a guy like Flacco, the well paid idiots took an OLB project. Thats afwul.

The franchise doesn't believe in offense at all. They signed 1st round picks on O-line, but don't have a QB or game breaker WRs. They have a decent TE that they never use, an explosive RB that is relegated to KO returns.

It takes 3 years to develop skill position players on offense generally, so you have to address the position in advance. You take a G late in the first round or on day 1, not sign some guy for huge $$$ and make that your plan. There are so few skill position players to go around, you need to take care of that and then not worry about it for a long time, occasionally restocking well in advance of when you need it.

Defense is very scheme based and generally has a very small window and low longevity. So you try and take care of the offense a bit more and then re-load on defense repeatedly. You do have to balance, but offense is a lot harder to build that defense, and defense is a LOT easier to coach up.

The CS is incompetent, and frankly the FO is just smoke and mirrors and doesn't actually understand the concept of building a team, especially a franchise for long term. Mangini's best players are FA or trade or from the last regime. Who has Mangini developed and used himself? Revis and Mangold? They're can't miss prospects and they're part of units that don't even dominate. Leon? He's barely used! Just incompetence all the way around.

Sadly I think I'm done with the franchise. I am going to try and follow them but I don't think I have it in me anymore, I had more fun watching the Giants backups today.
