SayNoToDMC
Raiders close to signing Asomugha to long-term deal Posted: February 19, 2009 Albert Breer Sporting News The Oakland Raiders are "closer and closer" to signing Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to a long-term contract, sources told Sporting News. The Raiders could lock up Asomugha for next season by placing the franchise tag on him by today's 4 p.m. ET deadline. Even if the contract negations are not completed by the deadline, the Raiders are not expected to use the franchise tag, the source said, a clear sign that a long-term deal is near. If tagged, Asomugha would be guaranteed $11.7 million, 120 percent of his '08 salary, for the 2009 season. If the Raiders sign Asomugha to a long-term deal, they could greatly lower his 2009 cap charge from the $11.7 million figure by including signing bonuses and roster bonuses into the contract. http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=519475 For those of you that wanted him
ECURB
I do not understand why he would do this... there are contenders that would sign him for the same money...

SMC
I do not understand why he would do this... there are contenders that would sign him for the same money... Because it's money right here, right now. And he was not going to be pursued by the Jets IMO because of his price tag. Mangini is no longer here. The coverage sack being a staple of the defense is no more. Having Asomugha and Revis cover guys for 5 minutes a play because of lack of pressure is no longer considered an ideal defensive strategy. BroadwayJ667
your right if he hit free agency Mangini would have backed the truck up for him, especially with rob ryan also in cleveland

ZachEY
I do not understand why he would do this... there are contenders that would sign him for the same money... Because he either gets signed long term by the Raiders, or franchised by them. Only chance he could play for a contender was via trade, and that's if the Raiders would trade him to one. ZachEY
Today is the deadline and they still didn't do it. Then I would assume they are supremely confident that this deal is done. Why would they let him just walk?
SayNoToDMC
Then I would assume they are supremely confident that this deal is done. Why would they let him just walk? They already have a deal and are just waiting for approval from the NFL management council. ASOMUGHA CONTRACT IN LEAGUE’S HANDS Posted by Mike Florio on February 19, 2009, 1:19 p.m. EST The deal between the Raiders and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is nearly done. Per Jim Trotter of SI.com, the contract is in the hands of the NFL’s Management Council, which reviews every contract for approval. Trotter reports that Asomugha will receive $26 million in guaranteed money over the first two years of the deal, which approximates the money he’d receive under the franchise tag for this season and next. and for those asking why he's staying with the raiders that could be the reason
BroadwayJ667
Nnamdi Asomugha and the Oakland Raiders agreed to terms on a six-year contract that will bring the All-Pro cornerback $28.5 million guaranteed over the next two years, a source familiar with the negotiations said today. Agent Tom Condon forwarded the proposed contract to the NFL's Management Council this morning, which the council approved. Asomugha's contract voids after the second season unless the Raiders pay him $16.8 million for 2011 or the franchise tag for a quarterback, whichever is higher. Yesterday, the Raiders reached agreement with free-agent punter Shane Lechler on a $12 million, four-year deal that reportedly includes $9 million in guarantees. SMC
Bird in the hand beats 2 in the bush. Asomugha signed with the Raiders because he was getting $26 million guaranteed over 2 years, RIGHT NOW. I mean, RIGHT NOW, as in he has a contract and will get paid. It's a sure thing compared what he COULD get from other teams in a few weeks.
BroadwayJ667
right its unlikely he was going to get 28.5 million guaranteed over any contract he signed in free agency
MikeNugent
Because he either gets signed long term by the Raiders, or franchised by them. Only chance he could play for a contender was via trade, and that's if the Raiders would trade him to one. Also because the Raiders, as usual, have given him an astronomical contract that no-one else would offer. Take a look at the worst NFL contracts ever that just got put up on espn.com. The RAYYYYDUHS obviously are the star. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=contracts&sportCat=nfl
