Why the players hate Goodell so much

For the overwhelming majority of the league, he is the first person to hold them accountable for their actions. These guys, because of their status/fame have breezed through life and been given anything they want by their hangers-on. Players are bashing him now about the lockout but IMO, it's been brewing for a while because he's suspending and fining guys when they break the law or the rules.

I would agree with this to a point...he has been fining them for excessive hits, celebrations, uniform violations and then the off the field stuff. In the end Goodell is an employee of the owners, which gives him a huge bullseye

Goodell went on an absolutely disastrous meet and greet tour of all the camps two years ago where he basically infuriated every player in the league with his views on the 18 game schedule, playing in Europe, concussions, etc. The most common observation was that the players couldn't believe how "out of touch" Goodell was. Players, en masse, don't care about guys getting suspended for off-the-field sh*t, but they all think (apparently) these fines/suspensions for "defenseless receiver" or "leading with the helmet" are both hypocritical and little more than a transparent attempts at pretending to give s sh*t about player safety. I haven't seen one instance where an actual player supported it and, in fact, I've seen a bunch of the same players who were the victims of those penalty-inducing hits say that they didn't think the hits were dirty.

In sum, players hate Goodell for the same reason everybody hates Goodell--because he's a sheltered, country-club white boy who should be middle management at Deutsche Bank, proposing the best ways to increase interest rates on home loans. Instead, he rode the Good Ol' Boy network all the way up to becoming Commissioner of a league and a product played by and watched by people he has nothing in common with and whom he doesn't understand.

I never got the feeling that Paul Taglubue was "in touch" with the players or fans, but they loved him because they could kill people and Tags didn't have any issue with it. At least, I don't remember him suspending Leonard Little for killing that woman.

I agree with AFJF.

Goodell is basically being a strict parent where there wasn't one before and the players are getting butt hurt over it. Sometimes you have to save the 'kids' from themselves.

His actions have been to protect the game and players.

Tagliabue had the extreme benefit of being Commish when Mara and Rooney had control of the owners, and both of those guys were principals of revenue-sharing and keeping the game accessible to fans. Goodell is the face of a group of owners now led by Jerry Jones, Kraft and Dan Snyder, who will all steal the gold fillings out of their grandmother's mouth while she's still breathing. A stronger Commissioner with any clue about the interests of fans or players may have been able to suppress what you have now, but Goodell is not that guy and now we have what we have, which is a cluster**** and a public relations disaster. Goodell supporter or not, you have to be a little concerned about the direction the league is going under his stewardship. It won't be too long until your Jets are flying to England to play a 4 AM game on a Tuesday.

How are PSLs, blacked out games and 18 game seasons protecting anybody?

PSL's were here before Goodell. As far as I know, as commish, he can't dictate to teams how they go about generating revenue. If it were another commish, do you think he'd step in and say "wait, you'd better lower ticket and merchandise pricing to look out for the fans in these tough economic times" or something along those lines? I don't.

I agree that he's off base with the blackouts but again, do you think the players give a flying Feck if you or me can't watch our favorite team on Sundays? Do you really think they're in the locker room saying "damn, I can't believe the commish is letting these blackouts happen". I don't.

I'm not saying he's perfect, I'm just saying that I think the players coming out and bashing him has to do with somebody treating them like grown men. They're not used to it and it's rubbing them the wrong way.

He's protecting the game by showing the fans he's willing to hold players accountable the same way most fans would be held accountable in their jobs. I've been a sports fan since I was 11 years old but I've had my days where I resent the unlawful behavior of the players, but I have a lot more respect for the league as a whole because I know there's a chance that a player won't walk away scott free. If Tags were still in charge, do you think he'd have said or done anything to big Ben? I don't.

So Goodell is a babysitter?

I never understood why the babyboomer fan gets off on the young black athlete being punished. Because this is exactly what were getting at here.

I'm sure there are some fans who do enjoy watching black athletes get punished. I, however, enjoy seeing any and all of these guys behing held accountalbe. Even the white rapist who plays QB for the Steelers.

I think Kraft is a money grubber too....but it's hard to completely hate a guy that does as much philanthropic work as he does. For example, I have a friend who is volunteering to work at one of the concession stands this Saturday night (Revolution game). She's working for free and she's working because her daughter goes to and runs track for, the school where half of the consession stand proceeds will go to. I still think he's a jerk...just a jerk that tries to give back sometimes.

The NFL is a business. The owners own the business to make a profit. I can't blame someone for wanting to maximizing profits....but yah, someone needs to take their blinders off and show them that some of their greed will ultimately result in the sports demise. There has to be a happy compromise. It's just slow to get there because you have a lot of egos working overtime.

In the meantime, we can listen to the anti-capitalism, liberal rants of Tom Marx...er...Shane.

The cracking down on the players isn't the fundamental reason why they hate him now, IMO. They hate him because he's been driving toward this lockout for two years at minimum, along with trying to impose an 18 game schedule and international expansion. If Goodell was your boss, you'd want to kill him.

As far as punishments for off-the-field behavior, I don't see that as generating ill will amongst the majority. No players are mad that Ben got six games, or that Plaxico got suspended for the gun thing. Players only care about their own pockets. It's fine and well that Goodell has come down on the players for screwing up, but it's overstated. How many games did Braylon get for his DUI? All Goodell did was take a page from David Stern's playbook and tried to preempt the corporate backlash toward his league that the NBA was starting to feel not too long ago as the appealing demo of the suburban Caucasian fan lost interest in the on-court product. If Goodell could find a way to incorporate European players into the NFL, he would. Joking, but you get what I mean.

Why you little Palinesque buttercup!! I'm a moderate who is pro-market. However, I think the NFL had better watch its collective a$$ because it's been shown that a free market works both ways, and quickly, and they'll willingly implode themselves if they don't change course. The NFL is successful because it's an internally socialist system vis a vis profit sharing and equalizing revenues. Remove that, as they're clearly trying to do, and that league will collapse upon itself. You'll have 5-6 teams that make money and 26-27 franchises that are dead in the water within 15 years, which will ultimately kill the league. After the owners screw the players over with this CBA, they're going to turn on each other within six months, with small markets turning on big markets as soon as they realize that taking $10 mil away from their first round picks didn't equate to making as much as Jerry Jones did last year.

Your scenerio if frightening.

Good thing football is a gamblers game. Not that the NFL would condone such a thing. Those spreads are for entertainment purposes only. LOL!

I appreciate the fact that he has tried to enforce rules that force players to behave "off the field".

What I don't appreciate are the rule changes to "soften" the game on the field. Football is dangerous and has been for a hundred years. Both players and fans understand that. That's part of the attraction.

I've also seen Goodell in some interviews and some "town hall" meeting with various fan bases and he seems to me to be the epitome of arrogance who cares little about the fans.

I'm not a big fan of his.

The comparisions of the NFL and capitalism really arent there. The NFL is allowed to operate as a monopoly. Just like the players union and the people in Wisconsin...two completely unrelated matters other than the word union.

The forced comparisions are annoying.

Then lets go back to leather helmets, no pads and allowing anabolic steroids.

An ESPN reporter said the average career NFL player's life expectancy is 20 years less than the average American male. You do not see a problem with this?

With the players getting bigger and faster everyday, they need to do something so players can live long after their careers are over.

While it will be impossible to prevent all injuries, protecting players from head injuries must be done. There is no arguing the affects of concussions on people.

In protecting players, he is protecting the league from future litigation. Or at least lessen future financial responsibility and maybe just maybe saving some players from being bedridden when they are in their mid-40s.

Screw it..bring on the hits because, I cannot get enough HBO specials on ex-NFL players suffering from ALS.

football is a business before anything else, and he works for the owners

he has to protect the owners from idiot players getting bad press, which potentially hurts advertising revenues, which is the golden goose. ticket sales and merchandise are pocket change compared to the all important TV ratings. you embarass the league, you get the horns

he has to protect the owners from a class action lawsuit over head injuries if the league doesn't have resonable work place safety rules in place

and for this the players hate him

they are pretty dumb

deMaurice Smith is an imbecile. And the supposed splinter group sees that they have only so many game checks before they have to get a real job after football. To break off talks, delay things now almost a month, decertify, all dumb, Dumb, DUMB.The closer you get to a settlement the sooner Goodell's hand gets forced by the greedy big market owners. He's a frontman, nothing more. And to an organization that has an antitrust exemption to protect and can be lost with every losing court case they stupidly fight(has the NFL ever won a lawsuit?). Both sides seem remarkably stupid, there is a deal to be made, and sharper people at the top of both sides would have made it already. Getting into a pissing match with the possbility of throwing away $ 9 billion is off the charts dumb. And they are about to do it to indulge egoes of Smith and the likes of small market rubes like Jerry Richardson. Go have a boxing match. This could be the most pointless labor dispute ever.

As to Goodell; the Vick nonsense is really absurd. Ban him , suspend him, let play, what ever. But spare us the morality nonsense. Don't recall anyone accompanying Dontae Stallworth or Leanard Little -players who have killed people in drunk driving cases-to jailhouse visits nor getting this kind of coverage. Same thing with Favre. He's jerk, but there was nothing criminal nor related to his employment. It was a huge embarrassing joke, but hardly worthy of an "NFL investigation". It's strictly PR sideshows, with Goodell burnishing his image as the good daddy for hacks like Peter King.

This would all be true if Goodell didn't metion his burning desire for the 18 game season every time he opens his mouth. That alone renders everything the NFL has done to allegedly reduce catastrophic injuries as superficial and hypocritical. It's like putting a negligibly more effective filter on cigarettes while at the same time lowering the legal age to buy them to 16.

I agree that is pure hypocrisy, but the concussion rules are there so the league can say in court they made it very clear to the players that there is a wrong way to hit

I also think that day the league had 3 crazy big hits created such a strong negative reaction among female viewers that goodell almost had a heart attack

believe it or not, goodell caters to them much more so than us.

they know we will never stop watching no matter what, it's the casual viewere that they cater to

It is a bargaining chip.

As much as he has said he would like 18 games, he sure did chair it quickly in their last offer in the first round of negotiations.
