Holmes could be disciplined for gaming investment

As a pending free agent, Santonio Holmes figures to cash in when the lockout is over and the league year begins. On Thursday, he was in the news for a different money-related reason.

Holmes is one of 25 NFL players who could be disciplined by the league for investing in an Alabama bingo and entertainment company, according to a report by Yahoo!Sports. Under league rules, a league employee isn't allowed to associate with a gaming operation. The NFL is sensitive to the gambling issue, and understandably so.

The report says that 25 players, including Holmes, Terrell Owens and Santana Moss, invested a total of $20 million in the casino. Jason Cole, who wrote the story, reports:

From an NFL standpoint, the league currently has no authority to discipline players while it’s in the midst of an owners-initiated lockout. However, though the NFL has yet to contact financial advisor Jeff Rubin, who guided the players to the investment and is currently working to re-open the venture, a formal investigation and/or disciplinary action is possible once a new collective bargaining agreement is reached.

“If it were to be determined that an NFL employee had made an investment in violation of league policy on gambling-related activities, that individual would be directed to withdraw the investment and it would be reviewed for potential discipline,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

The players could be forced to divest, which would cost them millions. They could be subject to a fine and/or suspension from the league. Holmes is no stranger to suspensions. He missed the first four games last season because of a four-game ban for failing the league's substance-abuse policy.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that wide receiver Santonio Holmes is one of 25 NFL players that has invested in a Alabama bingo and gaming operation.  This involvement could be in violation of league rules as players are not allowed to be involved in any gambling related activities.   NFL spokesman Greg Aiello offered: “If it were to be determined that an NFL employee had made an investment in violation of league policy on gambling-related activities, that individual would be directed to withdraw the investment and it would be reviewed for potential discipline.”

As of now the NFL does not have the ability to contact or discipline any of the players involved due to the lockout.  Once a new collective bargaining agreement is put into place, this story could resurface.

Regardless of how this plays out, this is not good news for Santonio Holmes who already served a 4-game suspension last year for off the field incidents.  Holmes could be headed to free agency under a new collective bargaining agreement and depending on the outcome of the NFL investigation this incident could lower his price tag.

From the Jets perspective this could help the team bring back Santonio at a lower price, or may even lead them into a different direction (see Braylon Edwards).  Just another twist to add to the New York Jets personnel decisions.

There won't be suspensions on this, to many of them, but what the heck were they thinking? They know they can't invest in anything gambling related, bingo or not.

They could all get 1 game... I wouldn't think that is out of the question.

Well at least now we can stop with the "well Braylon has gotten into trouble more recently" argument when comparing him and Holmes. Braylon has made a bunch of dumb mistakes no doubt, but Holmes is chronically in trouble and seems to attract suspensions. I still honestly want both guys back, but Holmes is the one that really scares the crap out of me as far as potential to completely blow up in the Jets faces. If he's re-signed, the Jets better be very careful about how they build this contract in case he keeps this crap up.

theres a difference between wearing cuffs at 5am on the streets of manhattan two days before a regular season game and the league sending you a memo about an investment in June.

this would not count on the 3rd strike of the substance abuse policy therefore no suspension.

This won't be a year-long suspension for a drug violation, I never said it would be, but you can't assume anything about what punishment Goodell will randomly come up with, because it seems to vary from day to day based on his mood. The fact is that his two suspensions are two more than Braylon has ever had, and in one year with the Jets Holmes already has a 4 game suspension, his airplane incident and now this compared to Braylon's 1-quarter DUI benching in twice as much time. Neither guy is a model citizen, but anyone who tries to paint Braylon as a bigger problem than Holmes is doing nothing more than desperately trying to defend a stance as opposed to use any sort of objective analysis.

And of the two of them, Braylon has admitted to his wrong-doings and vowed to make changes, while every time Holmes gets in trouble he sees nothing wrong with his actions and makes it clear he has no plans on changing his ways, which has become rather obvious at this point. Like I said, I want both guys back, but the fact that Holmes is a bigger risk isn't even debatable.

I don't understand the obsession with Holmes... he can make some amazing catches but he quits on plays and is always doing something wrong.

Holmes is in the NFL's top 100. Edwards isn't. Holmes is a better player... not just by that metric but by almost every conceivable measurement. Edwards runs blocks better, and gets 3 yards more a catch... that's about it.

I dont understand why the player cannot invest in whatever they want especially since the NFL is in nonoperational status which means the players are no longer governed by its rules and regulations since the players are technically no longer NFL employees since the lockout has begun....I say since the players were banned from team facilities and no longer receiving a paycheck from the NFL they can do w/e the hell they want and invest in w.e they please as long as the NFL has them lockout... The players could just say they need to find a form pay somehow and this was the best opportunity for a worthwhile investment and quite frankly it is perfectly legal.... such an investment would have been and should have been a problem IF and only IF the NFL was operating business as usual

I'm with you on the Holmes over Edwards thing, but wasn't Santonio cuffed during the iPhone on the plane incident?

They are both great, but losing Edwards would hurt more than losing Holmes.

DOTHAN, Ala. -- The NFL is investigating the reported investment by Jets receiver Santonio Holmes in an Alabama casino that has been shut down.

League spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed the investigation Friday, a day after Yahoo! Sports reported that Holmes, Terrell Owens, Santana Moss and at least 22 other players had invested some $20 million in Country Crossing casino.

The report also named defensive tackle Gerard Warren and linebacker Adalius Thomas.

NFL rules bar employees from involvement with any gaming operation. Players violating that rule could be subject to fines or suspensions and have to give up their investment.

Holmes was suspended for the first four games of last season for violating the league's drug policy. The report said he was unavailable for comment.

Country Crossing owner Ronnie Gilley and two of his lobbyists have pleaded guilty to offering legislators millions in bribes.

he was not.

On April 29, according to a report filed by authorities at Pittsburgh International Airport, a flight attendant told police that Holmes wouldn't turn off his iPod when requested and asked that officers speak to him. Holmes got off the Colgan Air flight and spoke to the officers, who reminded him to comply with regulations, but did not charge the wide receiver with anything. Holmes later talked to Jets head coach Rex Ryan about the incident.

Santonio Holmes: No apology needed

By Jane McManus

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Rex Ryan said Santonio Holmes was at the New York Jets' practice facility at 6 a.m. Wednesday, the first day he was allowed to fully practice with the team during the regular season.

As the wide receiver served the four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, Holmes was allowed to come to the facility and attend meetings.

"Guys welcomed me every day I came in," Holmes said.

Holmes said that he has used the time to learn plays, attend meetings and work out with the team. He wouldn't play this off as a chance at redemption. In Holmes' eyes, he has nothing to atone for, and said he hadn't spent his time off trying to change.

"To look in your eyes and be honest with you, not 1 percent," Holmes said. "I've been the same person since I stepped foot in this NFL, I'll [continue] being the same person until I leave."

Holmes was as unapologetic as he was the day the Jets brought him to the team, after Pittsburgh unloaded the receiver in April despite the fact that he'd been the 2008 Super Bowl MVP. In October 2008, Holmes was cited for marijuana possession and received a one-game suspension. He could have triggered the four-game penalty with a positive or missed drug test, which happened with the Steelers. Another violation, and Holmes would face missing an entire season.

Asked if any of those things had been a wake-up call, Holmes was forthright.

"I made it to the Super Bowl and won it, didn't I?" Holmes said. "That's all I had to do with myself. I didn't have anything to think about. I'm a football player, what happens off the field happens off the field, doesn't affect anything I do or what I'm capable of doing."

Last season with Pittsburgh, Holmes had 79 receptions for 1,248 yards and and five touchdowns in 16 starts. He said that to stay focused, he had the frame of mind that he was an outcast on the Jets, even though everyone was nice enough to him at the facility.

"It's a mindset that I had to use," Holmes said, "that I'm not playing, can't think that I'm on the field yet."

During the time off, he worked out each day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting with lifting and then some kind of cardio such as basketball.

"He's going to open it up even more," receiver Jerricho Cotchery said. "We're still going to do our thing as far as the running game, but another option like that on the field is tough for defenses."

LaDainian Tomlinson said he is looking to see Holmes fit into the offense, and to see if he can help the Jets on special teams with punt returns.

"Talk about a big-play threat," Tomlinson said, "Santonio has been that his whole entire career. We're excited about that; we've got some good things up for him in the game plan."

+1 I question this as well. No one has binding contracts right now.

I really don't see this standing up...makes no sense. No union, it is a lockout, there are no rules. But he violated one of them apparently.

I don't mean to sound like I am defending him in any way....

Holmes is an NFL RFA, so NFL rules still apply.

Goodell already stated that any incident involving NFL players during the lockout would be addressed when the 2011 league year begins. Adalius Thomas who isnt on any team right now invested in the casino and if he wants to play in 2011 he'll have to answer to Goodell first.

So if Sanchez gets pinched for cocaine this week, he will not be suspended?

Honestly....I think if a player was picked up on a drug violation it should be a legal issue only. There is no league right now. He might go to jail. But I really don't understand how an employer could impose a penalty under this environment. A lockout, no team communications, no union....

I get that, my point is more of a theoretical one. It seems like the NFL broke up with its girlfriend. But it is saying, wait for me....don't screw anyone else even though we aren't together right now. :D

How about when the NFL is in full action... should a rookie without a contract that breaks the law not be suspended once he signs a contract?

When the investments were made there was no lockout. When the lock out is over the NFL will force the players to divest, which really isn't an issue because the place is already closed and the CEO charged with bribery. i suspect there will be fines but no suspensions.

But it will count as an incident toward a suspension in the future.

Joe Namath quit the NFL temporarily because of rumors of gambling at his nightclub. It was serious business back then and I have to wonder if Goodell wont make examples out of these guys.

im not saying dont judge them by the play on the field but to judge players on that horrific top 100 list is sad and u would not know football

people talk crap about the top 100 list, it's voted on by the players. there's also a separate vote by the fans. Santonio is on both lists, Edwards is on neither.

***

look at the nYJ website... all the wallpapers of Santonio's big plays. they say a picture is worth a 1000 words. I wonder what games the Edwards lovers were watching

in fairness there are 2 Braylon wallpapers "gaining extra yard" and the "hard earned TD" vs NE. thats kinda of a metaphor for their strengths. braylon gains extra yards, santonio breaks games open.

there are 2 shared wallpapers where there are both WR celebrating. to be clear I think we all want them both back. but they didn't draft 2 WR in the same class for fun.

so to review you have, on the official Jets website, 5 Santonio Wallpapers and 2 Braylon wallpapers. But Braylon is secretly better. yeah right.

even if you believe it, the Jets don't.
