Quinton Coples ~ ~ ~

During the Rex Ryan era in New York, it would seem he had free reign of his first-round draft picks given the fact that only one in six years -- Mark Sanchez -- was an offensive player.

Defensive back Kyle Wilson, defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson, rush linebacker Quinton Coples, defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson and cornerback Dee Milliner spanned a hit-and-miss tenure that produced some great players for a great defense. It also produced Wilson, who is now in New Orleans, Milliner, who has struggled through injuries and a steep rookie learning curve, and Coples, a rush end who has been bounced around the defense so much that he hasn't had the opportunity to master one position.

Under new head coach Todd Bowles, though, the early reports on Coples have been positive."He plays with very good violence," Mark Collins, the team's outside linebackers coach, told NJ.com. "He can set the edge in the run. He can finish plays in the run game. He can push the pocket. He can affect the quarterback. It doesn't mean he's always going to sack the quarterback, but he can affect the quarterback. I definitely think his arrow is pointing up."Coples registered a career-high 6.5 sacks last season under what was one of Ryan's most productive sack defenses. He also had to drop in coverage far more than anyone would like, which will hopefully change under Bowles' version of the 3-4.

While it's difficult to label anyone a bust, Jets fans would like to see more out of Coples. Their hopes are indeed high seeing as his fifth-year option was picked up, but will he earn it in 2015 ?

Yeah, Coples will have a breakout season.

He had a lot of pressures last year - with the current DB's - I expect to see 10+ sacks this year.

Same here...wouldn't be surprised if he surpassed 15.  Bowles being a great motivator and no offense being able to double-team him while the secondary blankets opposing receivers.

I can't believe how much you're underestimating him. Low estimate should be 20 sacks IMO.

I don't see why 15 should be out of the question with his skills, this secondary, and a master motivator HC.

Only 15?

Hater.

Sorry...I view the season just how Herm Edwards did.  I take it one quarter at a time...extrapolate my prediction over the course of a season and Q is looking at 60 sacks minimum.

The Jets feel that veteran outside linebackers Jason Babin and Calvin Pace have “plenty of football left” and their optimism at the position extends to one of the younger members of the group as well.

Quinton Coples is heading into his fourth season and the 2012 first-round pick hasn’t produced quite as much as some might have hoped. He has 15.5 sacks in his first three years while moving between the defensive line and linebacker, but the team plans to keep him at linebacker this year and his position coach Mark Collins said that he sees Coples as a player who can help the team in a variety of ways.“He plays with very good violence,” Collins said, via NJ.com. “He can set the edge in the run. He can finish plays in the run game. He can push the pocket. He can affect the quarterback. It doesn’t mean he’s always going to sack the quarterback, but he can affect the quarterback. I definitely think his arrow is pointing up.”

Coples moved back to the line last year while Muhammad Wilkerson was out with a toe injury and dropped into coverage more than in the past to help with a leaky Jets pass defense, but the plan this year calls for him to spend more time rushing the passer. If he’s effective in that role, the Jets probably won’t spend much time thinking about rescinding the fifth-year option on his contract. If the arrow doesn’t stay up, though, the Jets may decide to spend their $7.751 million elsewhere in 2016.
