flgreen
Rex Ryan: I’m the right guy to coach the Jets Posted by Josh Alper on December 17, 2013, 7:17 AM EST Jacksonville Jaguars v New York Jets The Jets were officially eliminated from playoff contention with the Ravens victory on Monday night, leaving little more to focus on with the team in the final two weeks than Rex Ryan’s job security. Making the playoffs would almost certainly have assured his return in 2014, but things still feel like they could break either way. While the Jets have been more competitive than just about anyone believed heading into the season, Geno Smith’s rocky rookie year hasn’t done much to rehab Ryan’s rep as a coach who can’t develop quarterbacks and the drop from 5-4 to 6-8 featured some ugly blowouts that don’t help his cause. Ryan also wasn’t hired by General Manager John Idzik, which can be a precarious position for a coach to find himself. None of that has shaken Ryan’s belief that he’s the right man for the job with the Jets. “I’m a competent guy, even though I know that’ll be questioned a zillion times forward and backward,” Ryan said, via the Newark Star-Ledger. “That’s fine. But I know I’m a good football coach. I believe in this team. I believe in this organization. And I’m determined to bring a winner to this team. There’s no question about it. And I believe that I’m the right guy for it. I’m not the guy making that decision. If I was, it would be easy. I think that this team is on the right path. It might not be reflected in our record right now. I understand that. But I believe this team is going in the right direction.” Based on both words — guard Willie Colon said Ryan’s departure would be a step backward for the organization — and the way the Jets have played for much of this season, Ryan hasn’t lost the locker room. If those players can finish with wins against Cleveland and Miami, it would be a point in Ryan’s favor when the final decision is getting made. Jetscode1
All the media attention makes me think Woody's considering a change but wants public opinion before moving forward. Just listened to Westhoff's thoughts...good listen here. http://espn.go.com/espnradio/newyork/play?id=10147919
Lizard King
If that's true, Woody is the rotten head that I've been saying all along. I didn't see Stalin testing the public waters before committing the Red Army to taking back Europe. I didn't see Lou Lamoriello float the idea past the fanbase of sending Scott Gomez to NY. I didn't see ozzie newsome ask Baltimore if they should let Rex walk and take a shot on a special teams coach from Philly. I didn't see Steinbrenner ask Francessa if it would be ok to hire that third baseman from the Mets. Sell to Mark Cuban, Woody, please
flgreen
A surprisingly good interview. I expected Westhoff to trash Rex. He was interviewed for the HC job when Rex was hired, and was upset he didn't get it. He is a very outspoken guy. I was surprised that that he felt Rex has done a good job, and should get another year. Hmmmmmmmm

MexiRoll6
As much as I hate to say it, I expect Rex Ryan back for the next year (maybe two). Reason 1 - The media hasn't turned on him. In fact they give him a kind of endorsement with columns by Mehta, Serby and Cimini ALL listing reasons pro and con for Rex staying. Usually when a Jets coach is fired a lot of it depends on media perception and condemnation. 2 - Woody Johnson loves the guy and will convince Idzik that all Rex needs are good players (what all coaches need) and for the sake of 'continuity' to stick with him. Of course I can argue many of the supposed 'pros' of keeping Rex such as the players love him and play hard for him. They love him because he forgives ALL their mistakes. Pretend tackling is allowed and never held against the offender and the team DOES NOT play consistently hard for him. How many times have the Jets come up with a huge win only to come off the field the next week having been whipped by 20 points? Too many.

Not saying your wrong, just wondering I'm saying I liked the conversation between the two posters there, as well as the points made here at JN and and at the other sites as well. Obviously the media wants this conversation (my personal take is Woody listens to our thoughts) because they know it will get traction and drive sales. I'm a Jets fan what can I say. Can't talk playoffs so I have to discuss how to move forward.

MexiRoll6
I agree with Rex on this one. He IS the right guy to lead a dysfunctional, leaderless, pretender to more pretentiousness and teases for the fan base. Rex IS the right guy to coach a team owned by a Turnip with players who LOVE to play for him because they can f$ck up all day and still see the field the next week. Pretend tackling has become an art form for these Jets. Did you see the way Milliner and Cromartie 'escorted' the Raiders big FB down the field? They looked like Yarnell trailing Rex into the locker room. And I'll tell you all this.... REX WILL FIX NONE OF THIS.

MexiRoll6
Senior Kitty Cat. Exactly WHAT about my post is enough to "wipe out an entire village"? I said Rex is the right guy to coach a dysfunctional, leaderless team owned by a Turnip. Which of these statements is WRONG? That is exactly what we have right now, and I don't think Idzik has the balls to over rule the Turnip, which is good for job security but doesn't enhance your manhood by any means. Neither does going by the handle Senior Gato.

joewillie78
He is the right guy. No doubt about it. Oh well. Stupid Jets are still stupid. Actually, when you look at the POST-NAMATH era for this franchise, REX is the "perfect coach". For 40 years we have heard stuff like: "Same old Jets" "Laughing stock" "Butt Fumble" "Fake Spike" Who better than a guy who thinks he's larger than life, with rosters resembling, the bad news bears predicting super bowls, and not kissing rings he will never see. Yeah, who are we kidding? Rex is perfect................................................................................ Unless this franchise really wants to become relevant again. Squashes some misconceptions like Rex ignores offense, pretty much puts to rest Rex making personnel decisions and clearly blames Tanny and Idzik for the shape of the roster. Thinks they will commit heavily to improving the offense. Overall, he thinks Rex should be given another year. Westhoff >>>> Buzzards. I agree with him. Nobody is perfect, silly. And he's clearly learned a lot from this first couple of years. Pretty sure the Jets were revelant at 5-4. So they couldnt sustain it. Is that really Rex's fault? The entire offense went down and he's got a pretty bad rookie QB. This team even at 6-8 has overachieved. They're going in the right direction. They just need to get a whole lot better on offense.
