JetNation Posted July 10, 2016 Share Posted July 10, 2016 By Glenn Naughton As the July 15th deadline approaches for Jet defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson to sign his one-year franchise tender, chances of the two sides working out a deal before that team appear bleak. The Jets have not made retaining Wilkerson among their top priorities over each of the past two off-seasons as they’ve doled out tens of millions of dollars on lesser players. Their actions up to now would suggest the team views Wilkerson as more of a trade chip than a long-term asset. Mike Garafalo of the NFL spoke to members of Wilkerson’s camp who say they’re expecting one final offer from the Jets before the deadline, but there are no guarantees that such an offer will come. The Jets aren't in a position right now to give him the type of long-term deal he wants, especially given that Sheldon Richardson got off relatively easy on his suspension and Leonard Williams is developing. Next season the Jets will be in a much better position financially to offer a long term deal that will be equitable for both sides. bottom line: Wilk should quit his belly-aching and play. Wilk is belly-aching? The guy is coming off his rookie contract and is a top 3 DLineman in the NFL. If the Jets don't to pay him, many other teams will. He probably doesn't see it this way. He sees what Cox getting $63 million guaranteed, which means he should be looking at $70 million guaranteed. Long-term contract can be spread out over the length of the contract. Depending how the Jets want to structure the contract, (it won't be zero, but significantly less than $16MM), that's a lot of freed up money for 2016.
