Wilkerson Camp Expecting Last-Minute Offer from Jets

Muhammad Wilkerson

By Glenn Naughton

As the July 15th deadline approaches for Jet defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson to sign his one-year franchise tender, chances of the two sides working out a deal before that team appear bleak.

The Jets have not made retaining Wilkerson among their top priorities over each of the past two off-seasons as they’ve doled out tens of millions of dollars on lesser players.  Their actions up to now would suggest the team views Wilkerson as more of a trade chip than a long-term asset.

Mike Garafalo of the NFL spoke to members of Wilkerson’s camp who say they’re expecting one final offer from the Jets before the deadline, but there are no guarantees that such an offer will come.

Should the two sides fail to reach an agreement, a lengthy holdout for Wilkerson is likely to follow.

Wilk is set to get paid nearly $16m this season, guaranteed, so he should stop crying. The Jets aren't in a position right now to give him the type of long-term deal he wants, especially given that Sheldon Richardson got off relatively easy on his suspension and Leonard Williams is developing. Next season the Jets will be in a much better position financially to offer a long term deal that will be equitable for both sides.

bottom line: Wilk should quit his belly-aching and play.

Wilk is belly-aching?

The guy is coming off his rookie contract and is a top 3 DLineman in the NFL.

If the Jets don't to pay him, many other teams will.

Maybe he should give the Jets a hometown discount because the future looks so bright.

He probably doesn't see it this way.  He sees what Cox getting $63 million guaranteed, which means he should be looking at $70 million guaranteed.  Mo sees this as a loss of $54 million dollars, not a gain of $16 million.

That is a very good post right there. 100% accurate.

Hey AF, do you know if the Jets sign Wilk long-term, they will immediately free up $16MM (Wilk's FA tag) this year, then they can then sign Fitz for $12MM and still have $4MM left over as pocket change.

Talk about a win-win situation.

Free up $16 million?  How would they get his cap hit down to zero?

FA tag hits the cap immediately for $16MM this year.

Long-term contract can be spread out over the length of the contract.

Depending how the Jets want to structure the contract, (it won't be zero, but significantly less than $16MM), that's a lot of freed up money for 2016.

Yup...but I don't see it happening.  They've been treating Mo like a trade chip for quite some time now.

So, you know if no extension by July 15 their can not be one till season over right?    Which is after 2016.

Any idea what the rules are regarding trying to trade him mid-season & having another team offer the long term deal?

He's untradable at this point.

What team out there would give up a draft pick and then assume a $100MM contract?

If the Jets wanted to trade him, they should have done it before they tagged him.

Which leaves their last chance to trade him mid season but that probably won't happen. As the post above mentioned... The trading team would have to give him a deal on top of giving up high picks.

Yup...looks like Mac should've dealt him last off-season if he's not going to be able to lock him up long-term now.

Can't keep em' all I guess. I'm not as bummed out as most people are. We'll get one more good season from him and we'll have Leonard to look forward to next.

I think they keep Mo and cut Harris loose when the time comes

Who is that win \ win for? Not the Jets, since the goal is to make the playoffs.
