Jets Sign DT Pope

The New York Jets announced Monday they have signed unrestricted defensive lineman Monsanto Pope. The announcement was made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

"Monsanto adds depth to our defensive line and will allow us to be more competitive at that position," said Head Coach Eric Mangini. "He has a team-first mentality and has valuable experience on winning teams."

The 6-3, 300-pound product of the University of Virginia has played in 48 regular season games, making 21 starts, over the course of his first four professional seasons (2002-2005) with the Denver Broncos. The native of Hopewell, VA has accumulated 80 tackles, six sacks for -32 yards, three passes defensed and one forced fumble during regular season play.

In 2004, the 2002 seventh round draft choice (#231 overall) moved into the starting lineup for the Broncos and posted a career-high in tackles (30) as the Broncos finished the season with the fourth-best run defense in the league (94.5 yards allowed per game). He has also appeared in two postseason games throughout his career, and made one start.

Pope, 27, tied a University of Virginia single-season career record for interior lineman with 98 tackles, including five sacks, as a senior in 2001 and followed it up on the professional level with a career-high four sacks in his rookie season of 2002.

Update #2 today.

I wasn't expecting this. Can't say I don't like it though.

Monsanto Pope

SELECTED BY DENVER , ROUND 7, PICK 20, OVERALL PICK 231

DT | (6-3, 295, 5.24) | VIRGINIA

By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Has run from 5.1-5.15 on a very fast surface. Fifth-year player who started five times and played in 11 games as a second-year freshman in 1998. Started the '99 opener at defensive tackle. Injured his left knee and missed the next six games before returning and starting the last five games at defensive end. Started every game at defensive tackle in 2000 and every game at nose tackle in the team's new 3-4 defense in '01. Had 28 tackles, including three for loss, and no sacks in '98; 11-2-0 in '99; 33-6-2 in 2000; and 98-9-3 1/2 in '01, when he started every game at nose tackle.

Positives: Can get bigger and stronger and has good natural size and strength. Played well in a two-gap defense in '01, much better and more consistently than he ever had played in the past. Has some quickness and initial quickness. Generally plays hard, tough and disciplined football when he bends his knees and keeps his pads down. Can play on the nose, as a 4-3 tackle or a 3-4 end.

Negatives: Small for a two-gap type of nose-tackle. Is somewhat inconsistent off the ball. Lacks pass-rush ability and closing speed. Will start playing too upright when he gets tired.

Summary: Showed tremendous improvement in '01 but still has limitations. Needs to get into even better shape and to work even harder to play on the next level.

Pope / Robertson in the 3-4 and Pope can become a NT. He's 6'3, 300 pounds and if he adds some bulk up to 315, 320, 325, we're talking serious business then guys.

if you say that for a guy who hasnt played for us yet....then why cant POUHA do the same???

From ESPN -

Insider Analysis

Grade 64

Expert's Take - Pope has adequate size to play the position. He has very good quickness and he has an explosive get off. He shows that he is capable of being a good one gap penetrator who can get into the running lanes and be a dis ruptive force. He as good change of direction skills and he re directs to the ball very well. He does decent job with play recognition and he plays with good leverage most of the time until he begins to tire. He is very inconsistent with his energy level over the course of a game and even from week to week. He has good size and he has the frame to add more weight. When he comes off the ball high he has a difficult time holding the line of scrimmage at the point of attack. He needs to be on the move to be effective. He does not use his hands effectively to dis engage and he does not show much in the way of pass rush technique. He is not a dominant pass rusher and he tends to wear down over the course of a game. He has had difficulty with injuries and durability and conditioning are factors in his play. He needs to develop more consistency in the effort that he chooses to give to the game if he is going to be any more than a situational player.

I've noticed that Mr. T in the Kimo signing and now with Pope that he

specifically mentions the character of these players and in Pope's

case that he is a team first guy. I forget what he said about Kimo

but it was basically along those lines.

That is why I think a lot of the guys he cut didn't fit the mold they

are looking for.

Listed at 6'1/300, Legree has more of a NT build than Pope (same weight & 2" taller). Maybe Mangini will have Pope put on 20 lbs. Robertson could show him how to do that.

When I have seen Pope, he has looked bigger than 300 lbs. That weight may not have been updated with each growth spurt. My guess is he is at least 10 lbs heavier than that.

I saw Pope on TV standing next to some guys that are listed at over 300 pounds. He did not look any lighter then they did. My guess is he can/has played at 310-320 pounds. If he does, we have our NT, or at least 1 of the guys we need.
