JetNation Prospect Profile: Western Kentucky WR Malachi Corley

If the New York Jets are hoping to get their stagnant offense off the ground via the NFL draft, they would do well to strongly consider Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley.  One of the top yards after catch receivers in this class, Corley would pair well with Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Here’s what we found in watching Corley in action on the All 22.

Height: 5105

Weight: 215

Hand Size: 900

Arm Size: 3078

Wingspan: 7548

Hometown: Campbellsville, KY

High School: Campbellsville HS

Recruit: ★★ #303 CB, #32 KY

Film Study: 81.5/100 (2nd Round Pick)

Games Watched: Ohio State (2023), 2024 Senior Bowl

  • Route Running: 8.0

Smooth on out breaking routes, mostly manufactured touches (flat, rounded outs, screens)

  • Hands: 8.0

Makes catches outside of frame, 1 drop vs OSU

  • Release: 8.0

Rarely pressed due to heavy slot usage, but quick release and showed he can beat press at the Senior Bowl.

Malchi Corley's ability to gain yards after the catch comes from more than just being able to make defenders miss.

Shows a powerful lower half and is able to take on contact, shed tacklers and make big plays. pic.twitter.com/7DQS1xQ4k5

  • Separation/Quickness: 8.0

Very good quickness, not a ton of separation but he can win on in breaking or out breaking routes

  • Ball Skills: 8.5

Manufactured touches, natural with the ball in his hand, good tracking ability

  • Speed: 8.5

Very good YAC ability on “now”/bubble screens

  • Size:

Sub 6-foot, but built like a running back

  • Run Blocking: 7.5

Not an optimal option for run blocking, but willing to block

  • Versatility: 8.0

Slot, perimeter, backfield motion player

  • Football IQ: 9.0

Notes:

  • 2024 Senior Bowl attendee

Summary:

Malachi Corley is one of the biggest risers coming out of the Senior Bowl in Mobile. He showed that he can develop into a complete receiver versus being a manufactured touch player. His versatility will be coveted by several teams in the league, but Corley is a polarizing player amongst pundits.  Some say he is the closest thing in this class to Deebo Samuel, which is a comparison that is a bit steep for some, but you can see similarities in their game.

Although the Jets do not currently own a second round selection, there is the possibility that Joe Douglas trades down from 10th overall to recoup picks that were traded for Aaron Rodgers. If that were to happen, and the Jets gain another top-50 pick, Malachi Corley would be a great fit for New York. In the event that Corley were available in the 3rd round, the value is too good to pass up.

definite pick in rd 3 if he is there.  Likely not.

I'd take him in the second if the Jets add a pick.  Feels like a guy SF is going to snag.

The Jets need some size at WR. Garrett Wilson is a good player but he's a string bean. Allen Lazard is useless and might have had the worst 685 snaps I've ever seen out of a WR -- he should be WR4. Xavier Gipson is 5'9 in heels. Brownlee is 6'2 but under 200lbs.

Get me Davante Adams and draft a WR in round 3.

Why are we measuring Gipson in heels though?

Dude you need help. He's barely a day 3 prospect. He makes David Bell look fast.... not to mention he's the Zach Wilson of WRs, having big days against Taco Bell conf competition..

Glen if this is your doing -- we gotta shoot higher than Fcking McCorley maaaannnnn,

Remember WR Steve Smith?

Heard him talk about Corley the other day as a back of round 1 possibility.

Smith isn't exactly known for telling people what they want to hear and knows a thing or two about the WR position.

And when did Ohio State and Auburn become "taco bell"?

Also a Daniel Jeremiah top 50 player.

Malachi Corley, WR, Western Kentucky

As you might know by now, I'm a fan of Corley, who was in my top-50 prospects rankings released earlier this week. We'll get a better chance to see what he can do after the catch in the Senior Bowl game on Saturday. He didn't get to showcase his YAC ability this week due to the structure of practices -- yes, he refers to himself as "The YAC King" on social media -- but I thought he ran good routes during drills. He showed his speed and caught the ball well. Based on the conversations I've had with NFL teams here in Mobile, a lot of people are excited about him.

I'd like a little more size in our WR, we have skinny guys and short guys. I want a little more height and beef who can also help with blocking assignments. Our oline is weak, our TE's are sus...While this guy might be a good 3rd rd pick up if he is still there and I wouldnt cry about it, I'd hope we are looking at other prospects.

I think the key word in the original OP is polarizing.

I heard someone talking about him the other day.   They loved the ability, but there were fears the WKU offense is not based around receivers running the routes in the route tree.  His performance at the Senior Bowl dissuaded some of the fears, but some still linger.

You’re wrong on this one. Trust me or don’t, but don’t eye roll when I necro this in 2 years.

He is not the guy.

If I'm wrong, it won't be the first time.

If I'm right, it won't be the first time.

I'm okay with that.

And I'm not sure who said he was "the guy".

It's just an expression I use. I think maybe the other way to articulate my thoughts would have been -- this is not a player IMO worth spending real estate on paper talking about.
