There was good news and bad news for the New England Patriots on Tuesday. The bad news is that they will be without the heart and soul of their defense for the rest of the preseason. The good news is that they could get him back before New England's first regular season game.

Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed late Tuesday night that linebacker Tedy Bruschi has a broken wrist and will not play in any preseason games.

Belichick did not make clear whether Bruschi, 33, will be available for the Patriots' regular-season opener Sept. 10 against the Buffalo Bills.

Bruschi was injured July 31, likely in morning practice, and has missed the team's last 10 workouts.

Bruschi missed the first six games last season after suffering a mild stroke just 10 days after the Patriots' 24-21 Super Bowl victory over Philadelphia on Feb. 6, 2005.

After saying he would sit out the season, Bruschi returned in late October and helped lead the Patriots to a third straight division title. He shared the Comeback Player of the Year award last season with Carolina receiver Steve Smith.

Bruschi's absence is another blow to the Patriots, who suffered three significant free-agent losses: kicker Adam Vinatieri, receiver David Givens and linebacker Willie McGinest.

The team is also dealing with a contract holdout by top receiver Deion Branch.

The Patriots got good news Monday when safety Rodney Harrison, center Dan Koppen, defensive end Richard Seymour, cornerback Randall Gay and defensive lineman Johnathan Sullivan were taken off the physically-unable-to-perform list and participated in practice.

With Bruschi sidelined, the team has been working veteran Barry Gardner at inside linebacker.

Pat's were already thin at LB, this can't help.

Let the preseason begin, The Pats are on their way out! haha

BTW Tx ,Your team is a bunch of old dudes and they are Falling apart Bro! lol  ............can you say rebuild? ;)

It really is time for the Pats to start looking down the road about 5 years from now so they can hope to contend with us otherwise they will be doormats for the next decade.

At least get your facts straight.

The Pats have the youngest (starters) OLine, DLine and secondary in the entire NFL.

How the hell is that old?

I still think the division is the Pats to lose, with only MIA making any viable push. 9-7 might win the division. That being said, the most intimidating and important part of the Pats D during the SB years was their LB corp. Everything on D was predicated around them. Even you have to admit they are now becoming your weakest link. Your secondary is hardly the formidable beast it once was as well. Again I do think you'll win the division, but I don't see the Pats as being a team with the caliber to appear in or win a SB this year.

In case you missed it...the Pats' secondary blows.

Justin Miller, 2nd year

Kerry Rhodes, 2nd year

Erik Coleman, 3rd year

Eric Smith, Rookie

Andre Dyson, 5th season? 6th season?

Pretty young too here TX.

OLine

D'Brick - 22

Mangold - 22

Moore - 26

Jones - 25

Kendall the only one over 30.

That is great...replace all the Super Bowl Champions with young guys. I like that idea myself.

See that's the difference between the Pats and Jets.

The Jets always live in the past and think players can perform like they did in the past (like CuMar and PennyBoy right now), while the Pats are smart enough to know that it takes youth, speed and strength to win in the NFL.

Where has the Jets philosophy taken them in the last 37 years?
