EM31
Still Alive !! He made it past the opening round where the field went from 6300 down to 2300. In round two they expect to get from 2300 down to 800 approiximately. He is starting today (Wednesday) in a couple of minutes... 3:00PM EST (12:00PM PST). He has a tough road to hoe because 3/4 of the field has a bigger chip stack than he has. Ah well, he thinks that it is about 50-50 to make it through the first 2-hour session. Today is all about burning off contenders pretty quickly. Around 600 players will end up "in the money". If he is still in by close of business today he will be close to a payout. If he is still in by the end of tomorrow I think I will probably fly out to give some moral support.

They just broke for dinner (90 minutes break) I am hoping for an email. The session tonight will probably go on until at least as late as yesterday which ended around 3am eastern. Basically it looks like it was a 12 hour playing day for them yesterdeay. That was around 1000 players going down to 350... Today's field is around 1300 so my guess is that it will take at least as long as yesterday. Chris figured his starting stack today of 27K was about half the average stack of 50K after day-1 so assuming that they will be eliminating around 65% of the players today, I calculate the new average stack will be somewhere in the 150k-160k range. EM31
Obviously these are all averages and last year's winner Jamie Gold was really short stacked after day-2. He was at 10K only. On day three last year he won about 17 "coin-flip" races in a row and the rest is history.

He does OK as far as I can tell. He beat out 1600 players to win his ticket to the dance here. I think he has always been a bit fearful of the bigger stakes online games so he describes himself as more of a cautious grinder type. Who knows what the experiences this week will do to affect that self-evaluation however.

I guess poker is more of a skill type competetion against others & not against the house so thats different I guess

EM31
This Update from my brother at 3:30 this morning "132k and still in... negraneau busted out lol..tomorrow should be interesting..." <edited to add> There are currently 798 players left in the tournament and today's action will be the first time that everyone is playing at the same time. The payout structure depends on the number of players who originally entered and there are conflicting reports about how many playters will be "in the money". The number most likely to be correct is the one my brother is hearing which is 621 but I have seen both 549 and 650 reported on differnt parts of the pokernews.com site. Regardless of which is the correct number, 650, 621 or 549, I would imagine that the 150-200 players who go out at the beginning of today's play after having survived two gruelling days, will be feeling the most frustrated. I think the early play today will be characterized by a lot of cautious players just trying to survuve and reach the payout window. Not just for the money although that is good but also for the rush that comes with being able to say that you played in the 2007 WSOP and finished in the money. 132K (my brother's chip count) is probably below the average of the remaining players but also not quite on life support either. He will probably need to survive the first two hour session. By the time I get home from work tonight I should probably have a good idea if I need to look for flights or not. I think the 60K was over the last (nearly) two sessions after the dinner break. Thursday through Sunday starting each day at 12:00 Pacific (3PM Eastern). Monday looks like and off day and Tuesday is the final table final day. Now the field is at a manageable level the tournament directors will be calling the day's play before midnight pacific I expect.

EM31
My rough calculations are that the ""average" chip count for the remaining players is around 160K. That means that quite a large number will be in the 50K or less range to begin the day. Everyone I expect is thinking the same thing and I expect the early parts of the day will have big stacks bullying small and medium sized stacks out of pots because they are afraid to be knocked out of the money. Having said that, so long as my brother does not gfet seriously bloodied early I think the top 600'ish should be a reasonable expectation for him.
