Fewer whistle stops in '07

With six infractions, Matt Light was the Patriots' most penalized player. (Jim Davis/FILE/Globe Staff)

Few flags were flying in Patriots games this season, as the team was called for just 78 accepted penalties over the 16-game schedule.

That total was easily the smallest in Bill Belichick's tenure as coach (since 2000). Not since 1994, Bill Parcells's second season, have the Patriots been called for so few infractions.

Since the NFL went to a 16-game schedule in 1978, the franchise low for accepted penalties in a non-strike season is 63, set by Raymond Berry's 1989 squad.

The 78 accepted penalties tied the Bills for seventh-fewest in the NFL. The Seahawks (59) were the NFL's least-penalized team, while the Cardinals (137) topped the list.

The Patriots' most penalized player? Left tackle Matt Light with six. Since Light played all 16 games and never left the field, he was a prime candidate.

Yet Light might contest the label as most penalized Patriot, because if declined penalties are included, receiver Randy Moss would top the list.

The 10-year veteran was flagged for five accepted penalties - three for offensive pass interference and two false starts. He had two more offensive pass interference penalties and one false start declined.

Left guard Logan Mankins also ranks high on the penalty chart, with five accepted infractions and two declined penalties.

In all, 37 players had at least one penalty. The Patriots were called for a season-high 10 accepted penalties in their Nov. 4 game against the Colts. The season low for penalties was two, against the Bills (Sept. 23) and Dolphins (Dec. 23).

Including declined penalties, the most frequent call against the Patriots was false start, as the team had 20. Offensive holding (11), offensive pass interference (7), defensive pass interference (5), special teams holding (4), and unsportsmanlike conduct (4) were the other most frequent penalties

want a another reason for 16-0 ,the just 11 holding calls! and this 11 includes holding by Rb's and wr's

Of course.....what did you expect? The league wants them to win, can't remember the last time they got called for offensive holding.

you have to watch real closely as they only get about 1 every other game

holding calls are drive killas

Only calls I see on offense is a false start. They were holding like crazy in the Giants game, not once did they get called for it.

And if Randy Moss actually got called for pass interference they'd have the most penalties in the league with about 247 coming from just himself alone.

The exact same thing could be said about any of the top WRs including your boyfriend Chad Johnson.

this came from bahston globe.. who knows how accurate it is

the holding calls look about right, i nevah see them called for it

If the NFL actually called a fair game, they would be at the top of the league in just about every category. It helps when refs turn a blind eye or two at least 5 times a game. BB has incredible football smarts and as long as his teams gets away with something, he'll keep on endorsing it.

I remember watching the Dallas-Patriots game and in the first quarter alone, NE got away with at least four blatant holding calls. Though they are an absolutely amazing team, but, one cannot beat them and the refs at the same time.
