There can't be three starters, Bender, a FA and a new draft pick. Clement IMO would make a fine backup RT. As starter he sucks, but he could go in for a couple of snaps or a couple of games. He's paid like a backup anyway & under contract through '08 I think. And either Montgomery or Bender but not both. I don't think Bender is an automatic because we spent a 6th-round pick on him. Project or no, that roster space is valuable. Montgomery has at least started NFL games & can apparently play both center and guard. Bender, so far, looks like he can't play anywhere. A lot can change from his rookie year to year two, but I can't say he should definitely return if he's not much better than the guy who couldn't beat out Clarke and necessitated the addition of Montgomery as Clarke's backup/competition. And among Brad Smith/Stuckey/Wright - 2 of the 3 but not all 3 of them. We need a real 3rd WR or WR prospect. Stuckey may be that man, but then it's Smith or Wright. Can't have the identical WR corps return plus a 7th-round player who just missed his rookie season. Smith probably stays & one of the other two. I'd keep Bowens or Devito as well & think one of them will stick. Probably Bowens. Barton & Vilma? Well it depends on free agency. I don't want to see two rookie LB'ers in the starting lineup on day one. So I'd bring back one of these two if we don't nab someone in FA. My preference is Barton since he only has one year left on his deal anyway, we could get something in return for Vilma, and neither one is really noticeably better than the other in this defense. Vilma's more talented but too small (and size aside, he just plays like a small LBer); Barton's not as talented but slow. But he's probably more suited to the 3-4. I can't watch another year of Vilma & the excuses that follow him. Pick up a FA ILB or OLB and we can fill the other one with a rookie; I'd be comfortable with that. I can't decide on Eric Smith; camp will have to decide. But it's not encouraging that Elam the blown-play-in-waiting started over him. Same thing with Dyson. He's still dirt-cheap for a starter, and a legit #2, if he can return to his pre-2007 form. Unless there are just personal issues between him & Mangini & they just let him go for that reason, which I think is a mistake. Also I'd bring back one of those 3 TE's you want to see gone. We have a starter & don't need 2 new backups. Dearth is strictly a LS.

will
These guys GO: 10 Chad Pennington QB ---> trade Chad bring in a McCown to backup Clemens 37 Darian Barnes RB 45 Stacy Tutt RB ---> bring in a real FB and draft the next Ahman Bradshaw to backup Jones and Leon 81 Justin McCareins WR ---> FA WR. I def wouldnt draft a WR ahead of OLB, DL, CB, OL even TE. 40 Joe Kowalewski TE 82 Jason Pociask TE 88 Sean Ryan TE ---> I like these guys but I'd much rather have a really good second TE behind Baker. These guys to me indicate the type of guy the Jets seem to like but who they cannot win with, in the NFL anyway. 61 Adrien Clarke G 76 Clint Oldenburg OL ---> agree with Sperm. Keep Clement to backup (Turner/Montgomery and Bender, too). DEFENSE 70 Mike DeVito DE ---> want to draft one of these in the first or second round. Someone big with big upside (Tre Moore, Sims, Balmer?). DeVito is obviously expendable. 58 Matt Chatham LB 54 Victor Hobson LB 55 Brad Kassell LB 51 Jonathan Vilma LB ---> I am done with Barton but there are more pressing needs, IMO. I would keep Hobson too, but only as a 'fifth' LB, backing up the starters. 36 David Barrett CB 21 Andre Dyson CB 31 Hank Poteat CB ---> they have to upgrade these spots. I can live with Poteat as my seventh CB (do they even keep seven CBs?) 26 Erik Coleman S ---> dead man walking

It is true that Clemens had poor line play in front of him and maybe he shouldn't be thrown out of town just yet. I would rather have Woodson but it's doubtful that will happen. I am assuming that the Jets are going to improve the OL this offseason. If they don't, Tom Brady would be fighting to win 8 games with this team. 124
I hear you, but we said the same thing about Mr. Pennington. "Build a team around him and see what he can do". There is a big difference between building an Offensive Line and an entire Offense. Pennington needs an entire Offense around him where as most Quarterbacks need a solid Offensive Line and then can either make plays and win games or **** the bed and the franchise moves on.. Problem is for Clemens, he has two Chad type receivers where really he only needs one of them (Coles & Cotchery). Cotchery, the younger and better YAC guy, is easily the choice to remain. He has better big play ability.
