LOWELL -- Jerry Forton, a former assistant and associate head coach at Niagara University for 13 years, was named to the UMass Lowell hockey staff by head coach Blaise MacDonald.

Forton, who was an assistant with MacDonald at Niagara from 1996-2001, replaces former assistant Chris MacKenzie, who recently accepted the head post of the Niagara women's program after eight years at UML.

"Jerry is very familiar with my coaching philosophy and style," said MacDonald, who will enter his ninth season this fall. "He complements my strengths and weaknesses.

"Most importantly, Jerry brings a tremendous wealth of experience, having coached at the Division I level for 13 years," MacDonald added. "He has coached in three NCAA Tournaments. He has coached and recruited players who have been Hobey Baker candidates and has done a tremendous job without some of the resources we provide student-athletes here at UMass Lowell."

UMass Lowell returns all but three players from the 2008-09 team which posted a 20-16-2 overall record and a 14-11-2 clip in Hockey East.

"The biggest things regarding my interest in UMass Lowell were the opportunity to work with Blaise and the staff he's put together and the opportunity to coach in Hockey East, which I consider to be the best conference in college hockey," Forton said.

Is that Lowell is a 25 minute drive to a major City. Niagra? Not so much!

PFSIKH: A Thundercat? Cool.

I'm going to see the Thundercat in March? It certainly won't be at the Garden for the Hockey East Championship :box:

No, but once UNH wins the round robin with UMASS that sucks and the UMASS that really sucks.

Doesn't this scream Beanpot?

Not at all. It screams "New England." If they are going to do this they should replace Providence with Maine.

Providence is horrible. Maine sucks as well but they have a lot of fans.

BC and Providence are the only schools in Hockey East that have legit D1 basketball programs. The students at Providence don't give a crap about hockey.

That is does.

Screw the mini tournament and have a double header with UNH vs Maine and BC vs BU.

Where they always are......out of the discussion.

The NU bandwagon was bursting at the seams last year (case in point would be JonE posting in the Hockey East thread around February).

This year? The NU bandwagon has blown all 4 tires.

Quick has chance to become first Minuteman since Thomas Pock to play in Olympic Games.

July 1, 2009

COLOARDO SPRINGS, Colo. - Former All-American and current L.A. Kings goalie Jon Quick has been named to the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Training Camp as announced by U.S.A. Hockey on Tuesday, June 30. Quick is one of three goalies invited to the Olympic Orientation Camp. In total, 34 players were named to the training roster.

Quick now has the chance to become the first Minuteman since Thomas Pock to play in the Olympic Games. Pock represented Austria in the 2002 Winter Olympics.

This past season with the Kings, Quick had a breakout year in the NHL. He saw action in 44 games playing nearly 2,500 minutes with a 2.48 goals against average and a .914 save percentage - all team best totals as he posted a 21-18 record. He also posted four shutouts and was named the NHL's First Start of the Week (ending Feb. 8) after posting a 3-0-0 record with a 1.67 goals-against average, .950 save percentage and one shutout in three games. He was also named the NHL Third Star of the Week (ending Dec. 28) after posting a 2-1-0 record with a 0.67 goals-against-average, .958 save percentage and two shutouts in three games.

Quick started 22 of the final 27 games and 41 of the final 52 games after being recalled from Manchester on Dec. 16. He ranked third among rookie goaltenders in goals-against average. He had a 1.76 goals-against average (16 GA in 546:03) and .942 save percentage (258 saves in 274 shots) in nine straight appearances from March 22 to April 9. His 21 wins ranks third-most all-time among Kings' rookie goalies. All four of his shutouts came on the road which set a Kings' franchise record.

At UMass, Quick led the Minutemen to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2006-07 while posting team single-season records with 19 wins, 37 appearances, 1,046 saves and 2,224 minutes played. He finished his sophomore season with a 19-12-5 record, three shutouts, a. 2.16 goals-against average (tied for 11th in the nation) and a .929 save percentage (fifth in the nation). That season, he became UMass' fifth All-American selection earning second-team honors. He still holds program career records for save percent (.926), goals against average (2.40), and saves per game (28.96).

The native of Milford, Conn., was a third-round draft pick, 72nd overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

....shouldn't the season start before you proclaim an empty bandwagon? I'll be back on it if they are good again ;)

I doubt you will be back considering the Huskies lost their best player who just happened to be a phenomenal goalie. Matthews will be a morgue again :P
