GOOD NEWS--Jets Can Sign Other Team's Non-tendered RFA

SMC

Recommended Posts

This is very good news for the Jets. According to the NFL, a non-tendered RJA (a player not receiving a tender by his original team such as Sproles for the Chargers) is NOT an UFA. He's merely a FA.

Thus, the Jets and the other Final 4 teams can sign them. I'm not saying the Jets should sign Sproles, just that a player such as him is an option. Under previous interpretation, I and others thought such players were not available to the Jets.

Sproles is fair game for final eight teams

Posted by Mike Florio on February 27, 2010 2:06 PM ET

As the league moves closer and closer to the first uncapped year since 1993, the rules gradually are becoming clearer.

That sounds a lot better than saying, "We screwed something up."

On Friday, we suggested that the Chargers' decision not to offer the lowest-level restricted free agency tender to running back Darren Sproles might have been motivated by a desire to keep him from the Colts. As a final four team that is prevented from signing an unrestricted free agent until one is lost, the Colts nevertheless can pursue restricted free agents at will.

The flaw in our thinking? The decision not to issue a restricted free agency tender to Sproles doesn't make him an unrestricted free agent.

Per NFL director of corporate communications Dan Masonson, "If an RFA is not tendered, he's a free agent, but not a UFA. . . . So Final Eight teams can sign him."

In this regard, the CBA isn't crystal clear. As best we can determine, a restricted free agent always is a "restricted free agent," regardless of whether their teams take advantage of the devices for restricting their movement.

This means that the Colts and the Vikings and the Saints and the Jets and the Ravens and the Cardinals and the Cowboys can pursue Sproles without having to figure out how signing him might or might not fit within the restrictions of the Final Eight Plan.

That same reality will apply to any other restricted free agent who receives no tender.

So why wasn't Sproles tendered? Apparently, the Chargers believe that even the right of first refusal requires offering to Sproles 110 percent of his 2009 salary. (The union believes it does not.)

In other words, we're not the only ones who have screwed something up.

I got this from another site. These are the RFA who were nontendered and, thus, available to the Jets from other teams. Not saying any are good, just that they're available.

NOTE, this list isn't finalized. The last day to offer RFA tenders is Thursday, March 4. We'll get a clear picture the.

I'd give those 3 a look. Whimper might have some potential at RT, and Alston on STs. Maybe Moss is old enough for a slot look now.

Uuuuum.....Anthony Montgomery for a late round pick please.

I don't think RFA tenders have to be in until 3/5. There have been some leaks about what the Jets are going to do about guys like Leon and Brad Smith, but nothing's been officially released yet.

Why isn't Darren Sproles on that list?

YES! Moss could be an option to fill that slot position we are all looking for. Whimper could be perfect for adding depth. Alston is probably too small to fit in a 34.

The rule is very simple.

We can sign anyone EXCEPT players who meet all of the below criteria:

* Their contract ended after this past season

* They have 6 or more years of accured service time.

* They were not resigned by their teams

Of course, if someone was tagged with a franchise tag or a restricted tender, we need to give the compensation or work out a trade.

I see my boy Will Mongomery was released by the Skins-he did OK for us after we went through the year of revolving door O-linemen. I actually watched his play at LG when we let what's-his-name go during TC...you know the guy they made stay in the rookies dorms-what was his name again?

Mark Clayton and Ryan Moats sparked my interest going down that list.

Me too. I wonder if Rex thinks that Mark Clayton can come in here and play the slot for this team. He would know, you'd imagine. Clayton sucked in Baltimore, but that may just be because he was miscast on the outside.

Another name on that list that's intriguing is Thomas Clayton from the Niners. He was a pre-season stud in 07 and 08 but never got a shot b/c of Gore. Blew out his ACL last year, though. Still, a 225 lb. banger that might be worth a look?

remember being on the boards when Clayton was coming out for the draft and how we pretty much ALL thought he was going to be a can't miss WR? Do you think he'd actually be better as a slot receiver TS, because I saw a guy that had bad hands in the playoffs.

I remember him at Oklahoma and he looked alot like a slot receiver to me. Very quick, tough, and made a ton of plays in the middle of the field. Who knows, though. Maybe he got paid and said "screw it." Here's the scouting report on him coming out:

Analysis: Positives... Very dangerous after the catch, showing excellent acceleration and a pull-away burst... Has quick feet to plant and make the first tackler miss... Best when lining up in a variety of slots, as he has the balance and body control to make the difficult catches from the inside slot or the quickness and lateral movement to be equally efficient on slants and fade routes... Has outstanding acceleration to uncover vs. man coverage and the speed to stretch and separate coming out of his stance... While not a blazer, he is sudden coming off the ball... Has the acceleration to run down poorly thrown passes... Pushes the field hard and closes the cushion quickly... Runs his routes aggressively, sticking it without any wasted movement... Reliable hands catcher who will not hesitate to extend for the ball in a crowd... Will sometimes revert to body catching, but he can reach out and go back and low to adjust... Has impressive vision and instinct as a ballcarrier, displaying the balance and hip wiggle to make defenderse miss.... Very aggressive blocker who is not shy to throw himself into the fray (see 2003 Texas game, where he registered twelve knockdowns).... Has the tools to be very effective at an inside slot... Shows good double moves to elude defenders in zone coverage... Despite his size, he uses his hands effectively to get a clean release off the line and dictate the route's progression... Has the sudden burst in his second gear to gain big yardage after the catch.

No one said the list was final.

In the coming days we'll see how things shake out.

And you're right about the deadline. The last day to extend RFA tenders is Thursday, March 4.

If they bring in a RB it has to be a banger. With Leon, we do not need a Sproles. We need someone to share the load with Greene, who tends to get nicked up, and whose punishing style both helps and hurts him.

You know who would be a huge star here? Toby Gerhart. NY loooooves it a caucasian running back who can play, and there'd be no pressure on him to be a feature back here. Remember when the Giants had that guy Sean Bennett? He scored on 55-yard screen pass in a pre-season game one year and I think most Giants fans had him in the Hall of Fame.

Agree.

If the Jets sniff around Sproles at all, it would be a sign to me that they were very actively trying to move Leon.

Think about this in trade terms, though. You'd be exchanging Leon and his broken leg for Sproles and a second round pick. You'd HAVE to make that deal every time, no?

Oh yeah, absolutely. If they wanted to go this route, they'd probably be willing to take a 3rd, or even a 4th, for Leon once they had Sproles in the fold.

I like it too because I think Sproles is better in the pattern than Leon probably is. Leon's great with the ball in his hands, but I don't think he'll ever be that big backfield receiving threat we both want on this team to help Sanchez.

That said, if they could find a big back that can catch, there's your perfect world.
