TNJet
The fact we worked him out and the fact that i think he may be one of the few sure things of this draft makes it a no brainer for me. Faneca's getting old,and Mayock even says he could play RT. Lets keep the Sanchize healthy and keep adding to our already best in the nfl oline. I watched this dude in their bowl game this year and he is a pure beast.
SenorGato
Me too, but apparently it's illegal to pick a G (no matter how good) if you already have a full OL. If Iupati can't be an all out beast in 2010, then when can he be an all out beast?

Bruce Banner
I've never watched Iaputi play which is the excuse I am going to use if he sucks. Assuming everything people say about him(elite run blocker, can play LG and RT) are true he is the most sensible pick for the Jets. Our LG and RT are pretty old, and the LG is already in noticeable decline. Getting a player who can back up both those positions and then replace one of them makes sense. There is also the fact that Iaputi is reputed to be weak on technique and getting by on tremendous physical ability. The Jets have the best OLine coach in the league and they can wait to develop him. Its the perfect fit all around.
Jetscode1
The draft board would have to get seriously wrong for us to be happy with him as our first pick. In the second round...great pick...in the first with our needs...just doesn't do anything for me.

Mr.Revis
Make no mistake Mike Iupati will be an outstanding beast in the nfl with proper o line coaching. But with so many needs, we cant afford to use our first rounder on a guard even though 1-2 years we will need a replacement for Woody/Faneca. Next year a guard/right tackle will be on the top of our list, but for now it still remains pass rushing linebacker and a receiver.

Even safety isn't a big time need compared to what lesser teams would call a need.

Larz
I would like the pick my philosophy is you make trades and use free agency to fill holes, and draft for the future, so if this is the pick, I would get it. yes, I know with the final 8 rule UFA isn't a huge option for us this year, but drafting for need leads to reaches and poor value
bitonti
iupati shouldn't be passed over... hes awesome but he could go anywhere from 8 to 28... there are a bunch of teams that need guards and he's the best true guard I've ever seen live. faneca has a huge salary due to him and might be a goner after 2011. bitonti
Why does a lineman that good with the height to play tackle end up a guard? iupati is extremely raw. English is his second language and his family came over from american samoa I believe in his teens. It has been an adventure for him. He's not like a Bryan Bulaga who has been alive 20 years and had excellent football coaching for 13 of those years. Iupati's still learning the game. Iupati is especially raw in pass protection. there's a general sense among the scouts that he "could" play tackle. he has the measurables for it. similar to vlad ducasse from haiti he could play tackle but at this moment, he can't. iupati is a very specific player. He doesn't play well at right guard for example. He's awful when they put him there. but he's an absolute a mauler at the left side. I dont know why... but some OL can only go one way... it's a real phenomenon... like the Seinfeld episode when George can't go left...iupati can only go left. Dbrick for example played right tackle at the pro bowl and absolutely hated it. People talk about versatility... that's a very real skill, not every OL or DL can simply flip flop sides and be great. still "having said that" i've been doing Draft daddy since 2003, been going to Senior Bowl since 2006... and Iupati's the best guard I've seen live. Carl Nicks was down there but playing tackle at the time, he's turned out to be a pretty good guard. Iupati has all-pro potential at left guard. bitonti
oh and one other thing the Vandals have a left tackle who is a rising junior Matt Cleveland... he's not as big as Iupati but is basically a lock down pass protector. He's a prospect too. http://www.govandals.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=17100&ATCLID=204914960

bitonti
Are you basing this on anything besides Senior Bowl week? yes film on several wac games... boise st and fresno were both on the espn gameplan. he was absolutely dominant but against lesser players. I noticed him way before Senior Bowl and actually suggested him to a guy on committee that picks the rosters. I checked my email that letter was dated 10/29.09.. Im sure I wasn't the only one to suggest him... fwiw also suggested Anthony Dixon, RB, Miss St and at the time, my contact said "there's alot of guys like him" but he ended up there too. as for geno atkins... he's a very good player in his own right... pass rushing specialist... exactly the type of guy the Jets need in the round 4 area... iupati's strength is not pass blocking... but he's a beast in the run game... could say the same about Faneca... remember seeing DBrick get beat by Mark Anderson in the game... Anderson ended up having a great rookie season for the Bears... and Brick had an excellent career... guys get beat it happens.

I've never even seen him play RG so I'm wondering if you're not jumping the gun on that.
