Hockey Playoffs

Is there anything better? Lots of folks think the winner of the cup will come out of the West. Washington has gotten hot, but they always choke. Philly has been slipping in the East. Vancouver is rolling teams out West. Playoff stalwarts Detroit and San Jose lurk. And perhaps the biggest wild card is whether or no Sid the Kid will lace them up at all this post-season. My money is on him waiting until next season.

The teams aren't even settled yet with only 2 games left for most teams. Last years champ is currently the #8 seed in the west but that could change. Rangers could make it or miss it depending on how it all skates out.

So, who you got?

Happily surprised the Rangera got in. The first 20 minutes of today's game were Ilya Kovlachuk beating the hell out of them. But like all season they fought back.Completely shokced the Bolts played all out and the Canes laid an egg tonight.

I'm happy we'll have a few more games, but suspect a Callahan-less Rangers team is going to have a very tough time against the Caps, unless Gaborik remembers they pay him to score goals and Chris Drury can turn the clock back a decade or so and shadow Ovechkin. And if The King can stand on his head. But other than the last thing, don't see it happening.

One really odd thing-Sean Avery is not going to see the ice. the refs call him for 2 minutes for everything and anything and nothing, and he no longer is effective in front of the net. Which is kinda sad because even when he gets on the ice he's is no longer nearly the disrutive agent he used to be, and the Rangers ghastly power play consists of 5 guys making perfect passes on the perimetet but taking no shots. Not sure if Torterella won't play him because he's ineffective or because the refs have his number there's no point oto being shorthanded 3 or 4 times.

I am also happy to see the Rangers in but I really don't think it will be much of a series unless Lundquist stands on his head.

One of these years San Jose is going to get it right and actually do something in the post season. Vancouver though has been the best team throughout the regular season and it won't surprise me to them holding up the Cup when all is said and done.

Agree. The Sharks and Canucks are probably going to fight it out in the Western finals to thump who ever comes out of the East.

The Rangers, the 8 seed, were only 10 points behind the 1 seed, the Caps.

Rangers actually spanked the Sharks in SJ on their last West Coast trip. But over 7 games, don't see anyone in the east beating those teams unless Crosby coems back 100%, which is not happening until next season.

Avery is a healthy scratch tonight.

Rangers played 51 solid minutes. Problem is they didn't generate much offense and seemed to spend OT in their own end hoping for a mistake and that Lundqvist would stand on his head(and mostly he did). But they got nothing from Gaborik. Had he converted ANYTHING in regulation (and he had 4 shots, including 1 at point blank right in front) they win. Some bitching about Ovechkin's tying goal, but that's what happens when you crash the net, something the Rangers never do on offense. Especially in the playoffs you are more likely to get a scramble/garbage goal like that that a perfect 3 pinpoint pass outlet shot.

Simply the Caps are going to win unless the Rangers do more offensively.

The Caps just look so much faster than the Rangers.

Once Ovechkin scored I just had that feeling of dread that the Rangers were done for the night.

And you are dead on with the perfect 3 pinpoint pass. The Rangers wasted alot of time on their PP's last night trying to setup the perfect shot. Throw the puck at the net and look for a rebound.

Maybe last year. Anyway, Brodeur hasn't won a playoff series in like 5 years. Lundqvist was definitely better this year.

4 Years but who's counting, he also never blew a 3-0 lead in the playoffs. We picked a good year to miss the playoffs for the first time in 2 decades. The West is gonna dominate.

6-16 in his last 4 playoff series.

Marty's about done. And when he goes, so will the Devils.

This post contains the same wishful thinking you love to use in every conversation about your beloved sawx. The devils were pretty much the best team in the NHL during the second half of the season after their coaching situation was made right and that was without marty half the time and without their second best scorer most of the season and without their 2nd best dman the whole season they were KILLED by injuries and bad coaching. NTM they won the draft lottery. The devs will be just fine next year.

The Pens lost much more and were way better. Goaltending is key. What do they have after Marty? I don't know their goalie propspects but I doubt they have anyone that can carry a team like Marty could.

The Pens are just lucky the Devils had an inept coach for half the season and basically played like garbage for 3 months or they wouldn't have made the playoffs. It's about more than the goalie. The devils are bringing back a loaded roster that they are going to add a very high draft pick too.

How would the Pens miss the playoffs if the devils were better? Doesn't add up. Goalie is the most important position there is in hockey. Period.

Because the Devils played like crap in the first half of the season and were destroyed by injuries. "Better" is just semantics anyway but it was clear that the first half was an abberation. In the second half the devils were probably the best team in the NHL they just dug themselves a huge hole. BTW It's so funny that you're a Pens-Sox fan. Since 2005 right?

Clueless, lol, the Pens played the devils twice in the first 3 months, and lost one of them. Now htf is that supposed to make a 16 point difference in their total points? Talking out of your a$$ as usual.

The Devils were clearly not right in the first half. They were about 16 points better in the 2nd half though.

Just because the Devils were 16 points better doesn't mean the Pens would have been 16 points worse and miss the playoffs. The Devils could have only cost the Pens 2 more points in the first half, saying that if the Devils were better in the first half then the Pens wouldn't have made the playoffs is beyond stupid.

Who really know what happens next season. Crosby and Parise both figure to play a whole bunch more games. Also, Brodeur is a year older, and Lemaire is not yet signed to coach.

One thing that is clear-if the idea is for the rangers is to bring in old expensive Brad Richards to feed old expensive ineffective Marian Gaborik they are not going to get any closer.
