What should our priorities be now?

No, bringing back Braylon Edwards is NOT one of the next steps we should be taking. Move on folks, that ship has sailed. So what should our priorities be? Here's my take:

1. Re-Sign Shaun Ellis to a 1-year deal

There doesn't seem to be a lot of interest on the open market for Ellis, as he really hasn't been linked with any teams. Yes, he's long in the tooth, but there is no one I'd rather have training up Muhammad Wilkerson and Kenrick Ellis (other than DL specialist Rex Ryan himself) than the Big Cat. He's still got some ability left in him, especially when he comes to play against the Patriots. Bring him back for 1 more year if he's willing to accept a rotational role in the DL.

2. Address the Safety position

Currently, Ihedigbo and Pool remain unsigned, and Donte Whitner is available on the market. I'm not sure why Eric Smith has been supposedly handed the starting job (or why Rex is handing out starting spots this early anyways, SEE: Wilkerson), but if he has, this may mean the end of Pool's tenure as a Jet. I'm willing to go to war with Leonhard, Smith, Lowery, Ihedigbo and perhaps a standout UDFA, but its certainly not ideal. Perhaps a trade is in order.

3. Bring in a new # 2 TE

Kevin Boss and Bo Scaife are still available, with Boss being the better of the 2 options. However, since Zach Miller just drove up the price of TE's with his rather large 5-year, $34 million deal with Seattle, signing a FA tight end could prove difficult.

Regardless, if the Jets go into the season with Jeff Cumberland as the # 2 TE it wouldn't exactly inspire confidence. Bringing in a blocking TE who can catch a pass from time to time will be paramount, as it will allow Dustin Keller to split out wide the majority of the time he's in the game. Again, this might be a scenario where swinging a deal could be the best option. Speaking of which, John Carlson may be available.

I agree with all of this with one minor exception, switch the order of #1 and #2. While I would really like Ellis back, the Jets have enough DL depth at this point to get by without him. The same cannot be said for the safety position. Leonhard is coming off of a significant injury, Smith is questionable as a starter to say the least and after that all you have on the depth chart is a slow CB playing safety. It's the weakest position on the team by a mile, and as long as that's the case the CBs can shut down whoever they want, but the Jets will still continue to get exploited by any even remotely decent TE.

Like Bleedin I would flip 1 and 2, but I would add a new number one on top of all of them - Special Teams. They should look to make sure that the special teams are filled out. The team lost the starting punter, gunner and AFAIK haven't signed their designated special teamer - Laury. Leonhard may not be returning punts depending on his return from the injury. I think that Cole and McKnight will step up and I expect that Kerley will be handling some return responsibilities. I think the DaJuan Morgan signing was aimed at this.

FWIW, I think that Mulligan is the number 2 TE, not Cumberland. Cumberland is more of a Keller type, but Mulligan was active for almost all games and will fill the Hartsock role. I don't think another TE is anywhere near a need, but an upgrade might be easy and economical.

Maybe one of our gazillion-dollar LBers could cover the TE's. Worst part is that the cheapest and oldest among them (Thomas), also the most likely to be cut loose, is probably the best of the bunch at doing so.

That's actually the exact reason I think Thomas won't be going anywhere, because he absolutely is the best in that regard. We've been hearing every year since he signed his new deal that Thomas was on the cusp of getting cut or traded, and every year he's still the Jets' starter. That's not say he can't be upgraded from, but he's a solid player who may not be the greatest of pass-rushers, but does everything else asked of him quite well.

I agree about Ellis. This guy needs to come back for another year, even if just to mentor his eventual replacement into his position. Rex seems confident in the new guy, but nobody ever hops on the D line and plays perfectly their rookie year. I'd like to see Ellis back for depth and to give him another shot at a ring. Plus he's a great leader.

As far as our next priority, I feel getting a good pass rusher should be next. Someone like Osi U, we could trade for and unload a little cap space so we can renegotiate his contract. (don't give him 10 mil, give him like 8). I think that should be priority.

As far as getting another receiving TE, I don't think it's necessary. Our offense is still a run first offense, and we don't need to waste money on any more receiving options (unless we actually trade cotch). Dustin Keller, Plax, LT, Cotch and Holmes make a great receiving core. No need to expand it, when running the ball is a big portion of our offense. This may change if Sanchez takes us where I think he will this year.. plus we might get Edwards back for next to nothing, so don't forget that even though you think the ship has sailed.

I would like to see Pool signed for another year, but I don't think we can afford it. If Eric Smith cleans up his penalties, he'll be fine back there with Jim Leonhard. Those 2 guys both hit harder than Pool and I rarely see them misjudge angles.

I know I was being silly...but this is a good thread.

I'd like them to sign both Ellis and Pool back. I think familiarity with the system is invaluable. This isnt an easy defense to pick up.

I'm not as concerned with TE as others are...but could definitely see us adding depth from a blocker perspective. I'd like to see us add Crumpler. He's a good blocker and a Vet who is familiar with the Patsies.
