The Jets are Geniuses !!!

"All told, Sanchez will get $20.5 million guaranteed compared to $17.75 million of non-guaranteed money over the next two years. It's a "measly" raise of $2.75 million."

In related news, Snooki is a rocket scientist!

It's nice that we can use the word "measly" when talking about almost $3 mil, but in NFL terms it is. Especially when they get 6.4 in cap space this year. They basically paid to get more available money. Where else does this stuff make sense? lol

Wrong. The Jets are stupid because Steven A. Smith and some random posters said so.

yeah, I love reading articles from other teams gloating fans about what's going on with the Jets. It's where I prefer to get my unbiased information

THe guarente is the big thing, Sanchez could hurt his neck tomorrow playing tonsil hockey with JIF and we'd still be on the hook for 20M over next two years... The guarenteed money is what every player cares about...

Those trying to spin this as a win / win are homerific, it's certainly conceivable that a guy like Orton would've come here and beat out Sanchez if not for this extension. What we've done is effectively locked ourselves up for another 2 years to a guy with 3 years of bad QB play on his resume... Dumb Dumb Dumb

Your's is one person's opinion also. A person who delusionally thinks he can qb the NY jets as well as the current qb.

Kyle Orton lost his starting job to Tim Tebow who proceed to be infinitely better than Orton (like someone on this board predicted). Kyle Orton would not beat out Sanchez nor would I want the steaming pile of mush any where near this franchise. Getting bent out of shape because the Jets wont have a top flight back up (whatever that is) is petty.

Mark Sanchez was/is/will be starting in 2012, period.

All good points.

But borrowing the terminology from an article on a reputable JETS site, the JETS played meatball strategy instead of hardball!

I don't want Orton...I want me some Henne or Dennis Dixon.

Hardball implies that you have some sort of back-up plan. The Jets have no back-up plan that can be called anything close to appetizing or smart

The New York Jets' decision to extend the contract of Mark Sanchez was met with derision by many, but like the plot of a Spanish soap opera, it takes time to figure out what's going on.

Sanchez signed a three-year extension with the team on Friday, but he wasn't significantly richer or more secure when he woke up on Monday morning.

In 2012, Sanchez will make the same money ($11.75 million) he was set to earn before the extension. The difference is how it pays out: According to NationalFootballPost.com, Sanchez will now receive an $8 million signing bonus and a $3.25 million guaranteed salary, along with an offseason workout bonus of $500,000. The bonus is spread over the five remaining years of the deal, saving $6.4 million against the Jets' cap.

In 2013, Sanchez goes from a non-guaranteed $6 million to a guaranteed $8.75 million. The guarantee is nice, though it would have taken an epically bad season (think Blaine Gabbert, only more abject terror) for the Jets not to bring him back in the final year of his original deal.

All told, Sanchez will get $20.5 million guaranteed compared to $17.75 million of non-guaranteed money over the next two years. It's a "measly" raise of $2.75 million.

The rest of the deal is non-guaranteed, meaning the Jets can cut ties whenever they like. If Sanchez puts it together and becomes the quarterback they hope for, the Jets will have him under their control for three additional seasons at a discount rate. This was smart business.

Finally, there's a surreal aspect to the extension in the form of an escalator that can reach a cool $10 million if Sanchez leads the Jets to four Super Bowl titles in the next five seasons.

Of course, the Jets haven't been to a Super Bowl -- let alone won the damn game -- in 43 years. If Sanchez led the charge on a four-peat, the world would collapse into itself before the final check changed hands. The Jets are geniuses.

Kyle Orton would stand a good chance of both beating out and playing better then Sanchez, sorry Nancy

That strategy sounds delicious. Where can I learn of such things?

While I don't necessarily disagree with you, I am a believer in giving him more than three years. I like the move to retain him. The cap room is good too. I could care less if Woody pays more as long as the cap numbers work out for the team.

No, he wouldnt. He's a perpetual loser and proved so in Denver.

If you think that then you think Tebow >>> Sanchez.

Mark Sanchez is a bottom 10 QB by most any meaningful QB stat... I know he's hunky 4u, but Brady losing last SB should put to bed the arguement that winning SB's is about teh ghey

I have no idea what that has to do with Kyle Orton being a perpetual loser, but I see your point.

Kyle Orton was 21-12 on bears when surrounded with a decent team.. with better stats then Sanchez..

If Sanchez had been on Dever the last 3 years his record would be 5-43

And the year he was out for the season, Rex Grossman led them to the SB. So what? Orton sucks donkey dick.

^^^^^^^^What's up with these crazy clauses that Tanny puts into contracts? If the Jets win four Superbowls in the next five seasons, *I* willl *personally* hand over the $10 mil to Sanchez.
