NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Mike Goodson’s season just went from bad to worse.

Already out for the season due to a knee injury, the Jets’ running back was indicted Thursday following an investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that he, along with another man, allegedly possessed firearms and illegal ammunition.

Goodson, 26, was arrested back on May 17after New Jersey State Police responded to a vehicle that was stopped in the center lane of Interstate 80 West in Denville. Garant Evans, 32, of Roselle, N.J., was behind the wheel and Goodson was in the front passenger’s seat, Prosecutor Frederic M. Knapp said.

The ensuing investigation recovered a loaded Taurus .45 caliber handgun from the glove box. One of the rounds of ammunition in the handgun was a hollow point bullet, the prosecutor said.

Evans was also indicted for being in possession of a firearm in violation of a state statute prohibiting certain individuals convicted of crimes from possessing a firearm, the prosecutor said.

The official charges against Goodson are second degree unlawful possession of a weapon and fourth degree prohibited weapons and devices.

Goodson signed a three-year, $6.9 million contractwith the Jets back on March 15. He was expected to help a running game badly in need of a boost. However, a sabbatical following his arrest, compounded by aleague suspension for violating its substance abuse policy, kept Goodson away from the Jets until the fifth game of the season, at Atlanta on Oct. 7. He finished with three carries for 32 yards and one reception in that game.

He had four carries for 29 yards and a reception before tearing his ACL and MCL against visiting Pittsburgh on Oct. 13.

The Jets (5-4) are off this week and will return to action on Nov. 16 at Buffalo.

I really liked the little I saw of  Goodson. He was definitely in a different gear than any other Jet offensive player I've seen since maybe Leon Washington.... Seriously, that guy was fast, (and not just in Madden)... If it was him running through those holes, and not Ivory, he would have gone for a TD.

Meh.  He drafted Winters to be a starter on this line, Peterman was always going to be a stopgap at best.  He handed some pretty good coin to Goodson with the expectation that he'd be a significant factor in our RBBC.

Yeah, Goodson is bigger, but still not a very big mistake.  At least he looked like he could play.  I'm more worried about signing guys who flat suck.  $2M for Goodson.  They will probably cut him next year rather than pay another $1.5M.  it's not much more than people want to throw at Asomugha ($1.35M) who doesn't want to play or Lowery ($3.1M) who can't.

This. While it's not a positive signing considering the suspension and injury, I'm in the camp that believes those two things aren't predictable. No matter how much you vet someone's background, you probably aren't going to be able to predict that someone he meets a couple months after inking his deal will have a loaded gun in his car and priors. But to your point, as long as the eye for talent is there I'm happy. It would be worse if he was on the roster but getting non-injury DNPCD every week.

Goodson's mistake-his chaotic, but legal, personal life aside-was hanging out with a pot dealer for a few weeks.

He signs the big contract and he figures it's party time.  He and his new buddy are living it up.

Then they both get wasted, stop on the highway, and his buddy turns out to be into heavier stuff than just marijuana.  The gun and bullets are probably not even Goodson's.  The new found buddy's back in jail, and Goodson might be heading there.

His NFL  career is very possibly over.  All for hanging out with a low level pot dealer.
