Chris Johnson: Jets should have benched Geno Smith earlier

David P. Woods @davidpwoods 29m ago

New York Jets running back Chris Johnson believes the Jets would have more wins if they hadn't waited so long to bench quarterback Geno Smith and install Michael Vick as starter.

"I think if (Vick) was starting from day one it would be totally different," Johnson told the Seth Walder of the Daily News. "He came in and his role was to help Geno develop and try to help him the best he can, but at the end of the day it turned out how it turned out and (we’ve) just got to live with it."

It's hard to argue with Johnson after seeing Vick's performance since taking over as starter. In both Vick's starts, he posted a quarterback rating of over 100. Smith didn't hit that mark in any of his eight starts.

Johnson conceded there's little point dwelling on what might have been for the 2-8 Jets.

"You can’t go back in the past," he said. "Just gotta push on and go with it."

...and the "Rex was the victim of things outside of his control" head of steam continues to build.

You know, because the QB is the ONLY reason this team was losing games. Wait until Vick needs to go against a defense that hasn't been ravaged by injuries.

I'm sure Bevell will give Vick a few starts next year while Mariota learns the system. Gonna be a great situation.

Vick and Mariota fit his archaic system, that's for sure.

They're going to need to upgrade their interior lineman if they bring in Bevell. He's not going to be able to do what he does with the guys they've got now.   Otherwise, he might be able to quickly implement it.  Ivory and Powell are good interior runners, so he's got that in place. WR's dont matter since he doesnt throw the ball.  Mariota would fit his system well.

I'd prefer an offense that can pass but if you like ground and pound, Bevell is your guy and Mariota would make sense.

not his exact words but still shows some of the team wanted a veteran to start the season.

should have been a fair and open competition at TC.

definitely

Everyone in the entire Jets organization besides one man wanted Vick to be the opening day starter.

Thanks Idzik.

i wouldn't assume rex wanted vick to start. this was rex's 3rd rigged QB competition in his 6 years here: sanchez v. clemens, sanchez v. geno, geno v. vick

Wonder where we heard this before?  Just more of the stack of reasons Rex and Iditzik need to go.

yup

funny that now this is conventional wisdom when the few who called for it in pre-season were flamed into oblivion.

You were because this season was never about winning, it was about Geno.  Who we quickly figured out was a disaster.

Since now the fan base is up in arms about Rex not winning, which was never the intent, well...here we are.

Geno was the reason for the majority of the loses. Good one.

Wrex decides who the starting QB for the Jets is.  He can try and defer blame all he wants with his "organizational decision" all he wants everyone knows its ultimately the head coaches job.  Wrex is such a manipulator.
