2015-2016 New York Jets Season Preview

By Richard Bowman

The 2014 season for the New York Jets was one to forget, the team had playoff hopes after two disappointing seasons, but ultimately 2014 was the worst season for the Jets since 2007.

Since then, the Jets have went through a makeover of sorts. New York Jets owner Woody Johnson fired long-time head coach, Rex Ryan, and also fired incumbent GM, John Idzik. The Jets also saw major changes to it’s staff, as well, majority of the coaching staff went to Buffalo with Rex, and the scouting department along with some other positions saw changes. Woody Johnson hired long-time GM’s Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf as consultants to help out with the head coach and GM search. In the end the Jets hired Mike Maccagnan, who was the Houston Texans Director of College Scouting, and somebody that Casserly had known for a very long time. A day later the Jets hired Todd Bowles, who was the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals. Both of these signings provided a much needed culture change for the Jets, as the Rex Ryan era had been burned out for quite some time.

More Changes:

After these two hiring’s, the Jets retooled there scouting department which was needed for who knows how long. The defensive and offensive staff also saw much needed change. Outside of newly hired head coach Todd Bowles, here’s some of the significant coaches brought in by the Jets this off-season:

Offensive Coordinator – Chan Gailey: Gailey has been around for a very long time, he’s a very good offensive mind. Gailey is a very adaptive offensive coach that knows how to play to his personnel, he primarily runs a spread based scheme. This should significantly help out young QB Geno Smith, who despite being highly inconsistent has all the tools to be a very good QB one day.

Defensive Coordinator – Kacy Rodgers: Rodgers was with Todd Bowles in Dallas(05-07), and Miami(08-11), they seem to have a very good coaching relationship. In Miami, Rodgers had a very good track record, the Dolphins had one of the best D-Lines in the NFL during his tenure there. Despite head coach Todd Bowles being a defensive mind, Rodgers will be primarily manning the defense, however Bowles will still have his input.

Defensive Line – Pepper Johnson: The Jets lost a great D-Line coach in Karl Dunbar, however they gained a very good one in Pepper Johnson, who is coming from the Bills. Johnson played for the Jets from 97 to 98. Before coming to the Jets, he was Assistant Linebacker, Inside Linebacker Coach,  D-Line, and Linebackers Coach for the Patriots during his tenure there(00-13), in which he won three Super Bowls with the team. Johnson spent last season with the Bills before coming to the Jets earlier this off-season.

Special Teams – Bobby April: April is a two time “Special Teams Coach of the Year” winner, he should bring consistency to the Jets special teams for the first time since Mike Westhoff was the special teams coach.

Here’s the rest of the coaching staff changes:

Offensive:

Quarterbacks – Kevin Patullo

Running Backs – Marcell Shipp

Wide Receivers – Karl Dorrell

Tight Ends – Jimmie Johnson

Offensive Line – Steve Marshall

Assistant Offensive Line – Ron Heller

Offensive Quality Control – Robby Brown

Defensive:

Assistant Defensive Line – Ryan Slowik

Outside Linebackers – Mark Collins

Defensive Backs – Joe Danna

Assistant Defensive Backs – Daylon McCutcheon

Defensive Quality Control – John Scott, Jr.

Special Teams:   Assistant Special Teams – Steve Hagen

Improvements:

Not only did the Jets see a lot of significant changes in the staff, but they also saw them with the players. Last season, the Jets cornerback situation was in a dire situation. The team had promising safety Antonio Allen convert to corner which ultimately failed, Dee Milliner couldn’t stay healthy despite playing very well in the short time he was healthy, Darrin Walls is a solid player, but not a starter, Kyle Wilson just hasn’t been able to live up to his draft status, and Phillip Adams had his moments, but was wildly inconsistent. Then there’s undrafted Marcus Williams, who had a nice 8 games with the Jets.

Newly hired Jets GM, Mike Maccagnan wasted no time addressing this need by bringing back beloved ex-Jets Darrelle Revis(5 yr, 70 mill), and another ex-Jet in Antonio Cromartie(4 yr, 32 mill) along with very good slot corner Buster Skrine(4 yr, 25 mill). The Jets now have one of the deepest secondaries in the entire league, not to mention the best cornerback in the NFL in Darrelle Revis. The Jets have also protected themselves in each of these deals, the Revis one is only guaranteed for the three seasons, Cromartie’s is only guaranteed for one year, and Skrine’s dead money drops considerably after the first two years.

The biggest issue for the Jets has been offense, though, it seemed like with Rex, the offense was never going to improve. The coaching staff seemed very incompetent, and Rex himself didn’t seem very interested in offense. This is 2015, not 1980, you can’t expect your defense to show up every Sunday in today’s NFL, especially when it’s not elite in all three phases(D-Line, LB’s, CB’s/S’s). This Jets defense is very close to elite, but the offense will need to carry it’s weight, if this team wants to make any noise this upcoming season.

The Jets signed very good wide receiver Eric Decker in 2014, however it was clear that they needed more than just Decker, so Maccagnan made a trade for all-pro receiver Brandon Marshall. This gives the Jets one of the best 1-2 punches at receiver in the NFL, and all Geno Smith jokes aside, if both of these guys can stay healthy then look for Geno Smith to play competent football next season. The Jets weren’t done adding offense, as they drafted speedy receiver Devin Smith in the 2nd round of this years NFL Draft, they also signed Stevan Ridley, and traded for Zac Stacy. Two capable running backs. If Geno Smith doesn’t perform then the Jets also made a move for capable QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, it’s not ideal per say, but at least he’s had some productive seasons recently including last season.

As I mentioned above, the Jets got speedster Devin Smith in the draft, but they also landed arguably the drafts best player in Leonard Williams. This move gives the Jets more depth on the line, as well gives them leverage in the contract extension of Muhammad Wilkerson.

This past off-season was a highly successful one for the Jets, they added impact players, as well as quality depth across the board.

Additions and Departures:

Additions by Free Agency/ Trade

Additions via Draft by round

Departures

Darrelle Revis(CB)

Brandon Marshall(WR)

Antonio Cromartie(CB)

James Carpenter(OG)

Marcus Gilchrist(S)

Buster Skrine(CB)

Ryan Fitzpatrick(QB)

Zac Stacey(RB)

Stevan Ridley(RB)

Kevin Vickerson(DL)

Stephen Bowen(DL)

DeVier Posey(WR)

James Brewer(OT)

Joe Mays(LB)

Erin Henderson(LB)

Kellen Davis(TE)

Leonard Williams(DL)

Devin Smith(WR)

Lorenzo Mauldin(LB)

Bryce Petty(QB)

Jarvis Harrison(OG)

Deon Simon(DL)

Percy Harvin(WR)

Kyle Wilson(CB)

Michael Vick(QB)

Kenrick Ellis(DL)

Matt Simms(QB)

John Conner(FB)

Greg Salas(WR)

Phillip Adams(CB)

Nick Bellore(LB)

As you can see what the Jets loss, they either gained more in(WR,CB,QB,LB,etc.), or they were already strong in that area(DL), to begin with. This is arguably the deepest team, and most talented team, the Jets have had in who knows how long.

Outlook:

The Jets have what looks to be an elite defense now, and an offense with some potential, however it all comes to down to the QB, if Geno Smith can be competent, and limit the turnovers then the playoffs are not out of question for this team. The Jets don’t need Geno to be Rodgers, Brady, or Manning, just serviceable. If Geno falters early then look for Ryan Fitzpatrick to get his chance, this is worst-case scenario, though. Every Jets fan should be looking for Geno Smith to succeed this upcoming season, if so then who knows how good the Jets can be.

How'd Geno do tonight? Based on tweets it was not so good. This has me concerned for our season.

That's the rub on Geno..looks good in practice but put him in front of a crowd when it counts and he turns into a deer in the headlights.

Ugh. Tonight I'm not excited. Let's revisit my pessimism on Thursday after the lions game.

Will do. Just new here. Thanks, so will it show links or the article in full ?

Good info bro ... And in general I appreciated the article ... If it's on a semi-professional level you may want to make sure the "there - their" spelling type stuff is in order ... There should not be a reference to Kyle Wilson on 8/8/15 unless to say something like "when he was here he did not live up to his being drafted status" or words that don't infer he's still a member of the team ... And the additions/departures info you may want to make sure is pasted correctly. JMO

All nitpicking aside, thanks again for some good info!

I feel fortunate that Leo Williams fell to the Jets.

However, I also can't help but feel sick the Jets were so close to Mariota and didn't figure out a way to get him. Mariota was the best player in the draft, not Williams. The people in Tennessee are starting to think that might be the case now...

Mariota blows and hadn't thrown a pass beyond five yards the entire camp.
