Your All-time Team: But each franchise gets a spot

CLE - Jim Brown, Ozzie Newsome, Joe Thomas, Paul Warfield.  Thomas has no shot because of the logjam at LT.  Warfield isn't really there either.  Brown and Newsome feel like the only options.

Plus Warfield as much a Miami Dolphin as he was a Brown.  I gave preference to players who spent basically their entire careers with one team wherever possible.

Jim Otto OL Raiders

Thinking some more on this, there's almost no way for me to justify Jim Otto NOT being on the team.

When you look at the all-time leaderboard for 1st Team All-Pro appearances, the list goes:

  • 1) Jerry Rice:  10
  • Jim Otto:  10
  • 3) Anthony Munoz:  9
  • Ron Mix:  9
  • 5) 8 players tied:  8

That's insane.

Some other teams with a surprisingly short list:

HOU - Campbell, Moon, Matthews.  I don't think Moon is a great choice but either of Campbell or Matthews works for me.

CLE - Jim Brown, Ozzie Newsome, Joe Thomas, Paul Warfield.  Thomas has no shot because of the logjam at LT.  Warfield isn't really there either.  Brown and Newsome feel like the only options.

PHI - Is there really anyone other than Reggie?  Don't bother trying.

ATL - two choices.  Deion and Tommy Nobis.  You want to put Deion on this list, and DAL has a lot more options to work with so it seems like a no-brainer to use him here.  Plus, Nobis is jammed up by Keuchly so it's almost a lock.

Jerome Brown

Haven't given this exercise any time yet but when I go through the posts, this list seems closest to one that I'd put together.

The only item I'd address on mine is somehow getting Aaron Donald on here. Otherwise to me, this is a perfect list.

2-3 years ago, I can't remember who, but a poster here came up with an idea to create an NFL all-time team, but with a twist:  Each franchise (no matter how terrible) gets a spot on the roster.

As such I decided to give it another go this year and see if anyone else wants to give it a shot.  The only change I made was, for this iteration, I elected not to choose coaches, and stuck with players only.

The rules are as follows:

  1.  As noted, each of the NFL franchises get one spot on the team (32 spots up for grabs)
  2. Players must have spent more time on the team you choose than any other franchise (meaning you can't choose Tony Gonzalez for the Falcons, Terrell Owens for the Eagles, or Kurt Warner for the Cardinals, for instance).  If a player spent the same number of years for 2 franchises, you may then pick either franchise to represent.
  3.  The roster consists of 15 offensive players:  2 QB's, 2-3 RBs (or 2 RBs and 1 FB), 2 TE's, 3 WRs (1 of these can be a slot guy), LT, LG, C, RG, and RT
  4. The roster consists of 15 defensive players:  10 front 7 guys (at least 3 DL and at least 3 LBs), 5 DBs.  You may get as creative as you wish with the style of defensive front you choose as long as you have at least 3 DL and 3 LBs on your roster.
  5. The roster consists of 2 special teamers:  K and P.  You may also select 1-2 return men from your other offensive/defensive players.  But if you choose to use a "return specialist", you still must abide by the 32 total rosters spots rule.
  6. If a player played multiple positions during his career, you may choose any position he played (within reason; if he played SS for 12 years and CB for 1, put him at SS), but of course it would be in your best interests to choose his BEST position.

As an example, here's the roster I assembled:

Offense (15)

QB1:  Peyton Manning, IND

QB2:  Drew Brees, NO

RB1:  Walter Payton, CHI

RB2:  Adrian Peterson, MIN

FB:  Bo Jackson, LVR

WR1:  Jerry Rice, SF

WR2:  Calvin Johnson, DET

Slot:  Charlie Joiner, LAC

TE1:  Ozzie Newsome, CLE

TE2:  Shannon Sharpe, DEN

LT:  Tony Boselli, JAC

LG:  John Hannah, NE

C :  Kevin Mawae, NYJ

RG:  Bruce Matthews, TEN

RT:  Willie Anderson, CIN

Defense (15)

DT1:  Aaron Donald, LAR

DT2:  Joe Greene, PIT

NT:  Ted Washington, BUF

3-4 DE:  J.J. Watt, HOU

4-3 DE:  Reggie White, PHI

EDGE:  Lawrence Taylor, NYG

EDGE:  Derrick Thomas, KC

OLB:  Derrick Brooks, TB

ILB:  London Fletcher, WAS

MLB:  Luke Kuechly, CAR

CB1:  Deion Sanders, DAL*

CB2:  Patrick Peterson, AZ

DB:  Charles Woodson, GB*

FS:  Ed Reed, BAL

SS:  Kam Chancellor, SEA

Special Teams (2)

K:  Matt Bryant, ATL

P:  Reggie Roby, MIA

KR:  Deion Sanders, DAL*

PR:  Charles Woodson, GB*

Were you born in the 80's?

Ted Washington over Vince Wilfork? JJ Watt over Bruce Smith? Keuchly over Lewis or Butkus or Lambert??? Patrick Peterson over Revis??

You have to pick one per team.  Who are you choosing for Carolina if its not Kuechly?  How about Houston if its not JJ Watt?

Before criticizing I suggest you give it a try first so you can see why it isn't an easy puzzle.

It was actually quite hard to do. At first I started with the best players ever but when I got to the crappy teams I was stuck on who to pick so I started over and pick the best players from the worst teams then went on to the rest.

My preference there would be Dawkins.  But I used my Philly spot on Reggie White.

Right. But if (like me) you have White from Philly and Butler from GB you can flip White to GB and take Dawkins from Philly.

(or at least if you think White's 8/6 Philly/GB split makes him eligible from both)

You'd just have to do a 1-for-1 swap with Merlin Olsen

I gave it a shot.  I'm not surprised that I got a bunch of the usual suspect, but interesting that I got so many guys at the same team and position as @HawkeyeJet that were still different players.  Bubba Smith vs. Freeney, Lechler vs. Guy,

QB Dan Marino - Dolphins
QB Aaron Rodgers - Packers

RB Jim Brown - Browns
RB Barry Sanders-Lions
RB Earl Campbell - Oilers

WR Jerry Rice - 49ers
WR Larry Fitzgerald - Cardinals
WR Randy Moss - Vikings

TE Kellen Winslow - Chargers
TE Shannon Sharpe - Broncos

LT Anthony Munoz - Bengals
LG John Hannah - Patriots
C Charlie Bednarik - Eagles
RG Joe Dellamieleure - BIlls
RT Tony Boselli - Jaguars

DE JJ Watt - Texans
DE Bubba Smith - Colts
DE Deacon Jones - Rams
DT Bob Lilly - Cowboys
DT Warren Sapp - Bucs
EDGE Julius Peppers - Panthers
OLB Lawrence Taylor-Giants
MLB Dick Butkus - Bears
OLB Ricky Jackson - Saints

CB Mel Blount - Steelers
CB Darrelle Revis - Jets
CB Deion Sanders - Falcons
CB Darrell Green - WFT
S Ed Reed - Ravens
S Earl Thomas - Seahawks

P Ray Guy  - Raiders
K Jan Stenerud - Chiefs

Probably would be better off with Matthews and Bruce Smith, Morten Andersen and Curly Culp or Buck Buchanan or Tony Gonzalez and roll for a different Bronco.  Maybe Jim Otto and Reggie White and some other punter.
