YouTube content/subscriptions (Opinions, Recommendations, Flaming, etc)

Recommended Posts

8 years ago I turned to the board to help me find things to watch on TV, and that thread has not disappointed. Now with the explosion of content on YT, this thread seems like the next step. I know that there's so much out there that I haven't been exposed to or doesn't show up based on my algorithm, and I'm hoping to find more than what I have.

Leaving bands/music stuff out of it, at the moment, my list of subscriptions is pretty small:

  • Anders Erickson - mixology/cocktail channel where he puts out 8-10 min videos every week showcasing a cocktail, providing its history, and then making it on camera. It's simple and has pretty good production value.
  • Bright Side - random questions that the channel attempts to answer using science/logic. And I mean random. For example, 2 days ago they put out an 8 min video titled "What if a giant anaconda swallowed you whole" and then explained the snake's biology, and about an hour ago they put out a 19 minute video about aviation facts such as why planes don't cast shadows.
  • Dude Perfect - Admittedly I don't watch this very much anymore, but when they started out they were the coolest thing on the internet. A bunch of bros doing cool trick shots and celebrating when they're finally successful. Videos are cut up and edited so that it's rapid fire. As they've gotten older and more successful, their content has gone down a bit. There's also only so many trick shots you can think of and do before they become derivative or redundant.
  • First We Feast - The Hot Ones show is a really cool concept that features the host and a celebrity sitting across from each other eating wings and answering questions. 10 wings, 10 questions. Each wing gets progressively hotter which makes the asking and answering of the questions amidst the heat that much more fun to watch. The questions are very well researched and thought out. The celebs that go on range from Hollywood A listers to athletes and musicians and physicists, etc. The reactions to the spice are great.
  • Jets X-Factor - My favorite way to consume Jets content.
  • Joshua Weissman - fun food/cooking related content. Videos are typically him going out and trying something and then recreating it better.
  • The QB School - no explanation necessary

That's it. That's all I have. Pretty bare boned if you ask me. That being said, there's a lot of content that I watch that I'm not subscribed to. Clips of stand up comedians is my go to.

So, do you guys watch any of these above? What else do you guys watch?

I have two that I keep track of:

Brian Lagerstrom - Hard to find too many people out there that explain the steps of making a dish as easy and fluid as him. I've been cooking for 20 years and I love that he explains everything as if you are a beginner, it just makes everything so easy to make. His video on Tartine bread explained how to make it better than the book itself. Every dish isn't going to be a delicacy, but he shows you quickly how to make super common dishes good. Really good. I did his calzones for Sunday dinner last night and they came out insanely good.

Epicurious - I'm guilty of watching their stuff from time to time for anything from Frank Proto. He's always got some good tidbits on how to jazz up a basic food, and I like that he speaks to viewers as if we should stop being idiots. Not the best channel, but Frank's great.

Did you fry them?  My wife fries them and I can't imagine anyone making them better.

I usually watch car stuff.  For awhile I got sucked into detail videos, but mostly it is a ton of repair videos and junkyard type people.  I really like superfast matt.  He has an old S600 Honda with a CBR1000RR engine (my favorite part is that he put the motorcycle cable clutch on the shifter) and an old 50's Jag with a Tesla drivetrain.  Currently he is building an off-road Viper.

I am starting to get back into shape, so I watch some health stuff.  Huberman and the like.  From that I ended up watching a bunch of juiceheads like Derek at More Plates More Dates.  Those guys crack me up, especially when they talk to the guys that pretend they aren't on any gear.  It reminds me of when I was playing.  Out of those guys I tend to like Andy Galpin and Dr. Mike at Renaissance Periodization.

I’m not much of a home fryer, last few years have been all about baking for me. I actually did them on a pizza stone in the bbq and it wound up working out great.

The Critical Drinker is awesome....for some. 😆

I also love Viva La Dirt League, bit I am admittedly strange.

I've watched Drinker a few times but I tend to watch Nerdrotics stuff more often.

Gary is great, the whole FNT/Open Bar/Real BBC crowd are awesome!

Check out Viva La Dirt League, they're funny and make pretty good skit videos on Gaming. Baelins Route is great, my kids loved it!

Yeah for sure they’re all pretty great. I’ve really been enjoying the alien/conspiracy show Forbidden Frontier. Got me to listen to old Art Bell archives which I’d never known about before. Honestly most of the people and guests in that circle are a lot of fun.

Haven’t heard of Viva La Dirt League before I’ll check them out thanks!
