Justin Miller

I read a few days ago that Justin Miller has the best chance of all the Jets to make the Pro Bowl. He deserves to.

This kid has tremendous natural talent. As we have seen on kickoff returns he is one of the most dangerous players in the NFL when he has the ball in his hands.

Great moves, great strength, and world class speed.

As yet he has been unable to translate all this ability into his CB position. He is a very young player. Hopefully in the off season he and Brown can work together, and he can be taught some technique and blossom into a Pro Bowl CB.

Until then, if that happens, it just seems like such a waste of raw talent.

"Lil Schot" has show a lot of imagination in using players in situational packages. As in what he is doing with Smith.

While Smith learns how to run patterns as a WR he is being effectively used as a slash type guy. With, IMO, great success.

How about creating some "situational packages" for Miller.

I'm not talking about changing his position, or developing him into a WR, I still think he has a excellent chance to develop into a great CB. Just special packages to put some fear into defensive coordinators. Special sets they haven't seen on film before.

Here's an example.

It is 2nd and 1. The Jets are running the no huddle. The Bills have their short yardage D on the field. Unexpectly, Miller runs out on to the field, and lines up as a flanker.

Coles and Cotchery are still on the field. Chad is going to call the play at the line of scrimmage depending on what type of defense the Bills show.

The D is in a very bad situation. Here are the choices.

They can waste a time out, to figure out how they are going to deal with this. A wasted time out in a close game is always a plus.

They might suspect that Miller is out there only as a decoy and put a weak CB on him. Chad calls a simple fly pattern and heaves the ball upfield. Miller will beat a weak CB quickly in a foot race. If he catches it. It's bye bye.

They can put their fastest CB on him. Don't forget Coles is still on the field, who has also run sub 4.4. Chad calls Coles # who is now against a weaker CB.

They can have a weaker CB play Miller way off the line of scrimmage. Chad calls a quick screen to Miller. He will for sure get the 1st down, and maybe put a move on the CB and go for a TD.

If the defense over reacts and doubles him, again Coles and Cotchery are still on the field.

If they pull men out of the short yardage box, he hands it off for the 1st down.

It seems like a win win situation to me.

Just a thought.

Any one else have a situation that Miller might force a win win situation?

I'm usually not crazy about these types of ideas but I say why not. Just get him on the field and being procuctive. Even if it is as a decoy. Fake an end around with him or actually use him on an end around. He has world class talent with the ball in his hands. Might as well get some more value for where he was picked. I'm not crazy about doing it in a big spot though. Work him in there if a game gets out of hand first and see how he handles it. Keep in mind though, he did get on the field a little bit at CB last week so hopefully he shows enough improvement to just do what he was drafted to do.

I liked the kid from last year, even though he really muffed some punt returns. Those are interesting ideas, and I wouldn't be horrified if I saw him line up in a game on the offensive side for some kind of creative play, but what I am really hoping for is that they don't give up on developing him into a quality cb, I want to see him in the green and white for a while.

We can only hope... he has some serious passion about playing this game, if we can harness it and make him into a good CB, he could really be great...

Remember when he went HULKish against the Giants in pre-season... guy looked crazy! Thats who I want to be my CB, scare that WR...

There is a reason this kid does not play on offense already. I have no idea what the reason is, but someone, somewhere made that decision a long time ago. It is not easy switching sides of the ball. Ask DeAngelo Williams of Atlanta. He has been bucking hard core to get a little action on "O". Miller is a great return man, but he has had a ton of practice; high school, college, and now at the pro-level. To put a guy in a situation that he is not use to at the highest level rarely works out the way it was invisioned. I would relate it to a parlay bet for you gamblers. Seems like a good idea, shouldn't be too hard to do, and then uh, oh; what was I thinking? JMHO

I'm not talking about giving him 6- 7 touches a game. Just something to make the DC's start to sweat.

He is not Brad Smith. Different type player. He can't throw, but is much faster then Smith.

If one play works, DC's will have to start wasting time on preparing their team for him every time he steps on the field, and using players to shadow him.

I have all the hope in the world he can develop into a great CB. He did play a bit last week, and had a big hit breaking up a pass.

As I said Just a thought

How many gimmick players are you going to have on one O? We can't even tap what Brad Smith brings to the table. Also, I don't think they can just sneak him in off the sideline because there are rules about allowing the D to sub when the O does in the no-huddle. The real advantage in the no huddle is not changing players and doing something that particular D can't stop.

Now that you have Mangini leading the way don't expect a lot of Pro Bowl selections. The system doesn't lend itself to individuals. It's all about the team.

Has Mike Vrabel ever made a Pro Bowl? No. Is he a huge part of the Pats D? Yes.

Justin Miller still has the most talent of any Jets player, but is VERY undisciplined. You see it when he's out there on corner. He hits late and almost gets flagged, he always jaws at other players and refs, and is always first to scuffle with anyone who will give him a look on the field. With all that being said, he is blazing fast, is built like none other for his position, and hits like a ton of bricks for a CB, and has great vision on KR's. I trust Mangini can get him under control, cause this kid has a TON of potential.

Interesting idea, flgreen, but i agree with some of the others who said that Brad Smith is already that wildcard in the offense.

I think one of the problems JM had last season was that he was thrown too much too soon, what with having to learn to play cb in the nfl and getting pr touches.

I think he'd be better off focusing on the two things he has to do: KR and CB.

He needs work at cb and could be good, but I think it would be counterproductive to have him praticing at too many positions and not focusing on his real strengths to the team.

yea good stuff JC-he's gonna have to learn that DB position (who knows it might eventually be safety with the way he hits) I'm sure there would be a lot more questions as to him sticking around were it not for his KR skills

If Miller can mature and find a way to win back the starting corner job, keep it and play well, he will be considered a 2nd round steal with his kick return abilities. Honestly Miller and Hester are the 2 young returners and the best returnters in the game.

Absolutely SFJ. If he was not doing a stellar job at KR people would be screaming for his head. His situation is not unlike Hester's in that both are making a dramatic impact in the return game, but havent stepped it up as DBs (although Miller is ahead of Hester on the learning curve right now).
