After being cut by the Baltimore Ravens at the outset of free agency, veteran defensive end Marques Douglas is drawing preliminary interest from the San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, and Denver Broncos, according to a league source.

A potential return to Baltimore for the former Howard University player hasn't been ruled out.

Douglas has prior stints with the 49ers and the Tampa Bay Bay Buccaneers, who traded him to Baltimore for a conditional draft pick last year.

Shortly after the season, the Ravens re-signed defensive end Dwan Edwards for the 2009 season with a $1 million base salary and a $400,000 signing bonus.

The Ravens also signed restricted free agent defensive tackle Brandon McKinney to a three-year contract worth nearly $4 million.

Wait for it.

JETS LOOKING AT DOUGLAS

Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 5, 2009, 7:19 p.m.

Since Marques Douglas was cut by the Baltimore Ravens last week at the launch of the free agent signing period, the New York Jets have demonstrated the most interest in the veteran free agent defensive end, according to a league source.

A hard-working, blue-collar role player, Douglas has always been a personal favorite of Jets coach Rex Ryan, the former Ravens defensive coordinator.

The Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers are the other teams that have been linked to Douglas, who was cut last Friday by the Ravens.

Last season, Douglas registered 36 tackles. In 10 NFL seasons, the former Howard University standout has 371 career tackles and 19 sacks.

Listed at 6-foot-2, 292 pounds, Douglas has previous stints with the 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints after going undrafted.

Wait for it..

Two positives to take from this...

Ryan was his line coach for a couple of years in Baltimore before Douglas went to SF. Baltimore wanted him back last year after a 3 year stint in SF and Ryan wants him here.

He returns to Baltimore for one year and SF wants him back as soon as he becomes available.

Two teams that know exactly what he has to offer either have brought him back or want him back and his old line coach and DC want him here on the Jets...

One more: he's really good.

Douglas can help the DLineman while Scott & Leonhard (and maybe Ivy too) can help the Linebackers and Secondary. Douglas is a guy who has been in a 34 almost his entire career and would provide us with a veteran DE to back up Ellis & Coleman.
