JonEJet
HUGE mistake by the Yankees.....HUGE Hideki Matsui and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a one-year contract, ending Matsui’s seven-year run with the Yankees that culminated in a World Series Most Valuable Player award last month. According to an official involved in the negotiations, Matsui agreed with the Angels on Monday. The official was granted anonymity because the deal will not be announced until Matsui passes a physical exam. Matsui decided to take the Angels’ offer rather than wait and see if the Yankees would bring him back. It was probably a wise move by Matsui, because while the Yankees never closed the door to his return, they have been very wary of making a commitment. Matsui will receive $6.5 million from the Angels, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. The Yankees managed Matsui’s knee problems last season, limiting him to the same designated hitter role he will fill in Anaheim. Matsui, 35, held up for 142 games and hit .272 with 28 homers and 90 runs batted in last season. He was 8 for 13 (.615) with three homers and eight R.B.I. in the Yankees’ six-game World Series triumph over the Phillies. While the Yankees appreciated Matsui’s production and professionalism, they prefer to use the D.H. spot to rest other older everyday players like Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez. Johnny Damon could also see time at D.H. if he comes back, though for now, he and the Yankees seem far apart on a new contract. And how perfect is this? The Yankees’ 2010 home opener is against the Angels on April 13. So Matsui will be there for the ring ceremony.

Bugg
HUGE mistake by the Yankees.....HUGEMatsui's a very good professional hitter. But they can get away with Granderson in center with Swisher, Melky, Damon and a smidgen of Gardner in the corner spots, along with Damon and Posada getting ABs as DH. Montero is the real deal. Cervelli with start the year as backup catcher, but suspect by August Posada will be more of a DH. Bad enough Damon and Posada barely fielded their positions adequately in 2009, it won't get any better with age. They do not need a 3rd DH this season. Keep in mind also when you put Granderson in the Yankee lineup and 81 games in the Bronx rather than Detroit he can have great power numbers, whcih will go a long way to replacing Matsui's contributions. Wish Matsui nothing but good things. He is a good guy and did a very good job here.
Otter
I'll miss Matsui. He was a great Yankee and always seemed to come up big in pressure situations.
CrazyCarl40
I, for one, am very happy with this news. He always seemed to have a big hit in him against the Sox every game or series. Guess that means Vlad is done in Anaheim?
Blackout
Matsui at this stage of his career is a pure DH who cannot play defense Girardi says he'd rather use the DH to rest tired players than assign it to one player (which is the problem with the Red Sox last year) meanwhile for the Angels, this move is pure revenue lol

Jbro22
Sayanora, kid. Didn't want him back. I've always said this about Matsui, Even when he's good he sucks. He'll have a big hit just before everyones about to jump on him and chase him out of town. Lets get younger.

AGAW
Mistake? You act is if Matsui was a horrid Yankee and Cashman threw him out on his @ss...

The fact that the Yankees didn't pay Matsui the money for his bat, or his marketing power is reason enough. Cashman wants to get younger. Matsui's smoke screen during the world series wasn't enough for Cashman to go against his plan.

No, I'm simply saying the scouting dept may have said there is no way he makes it through another season, even as a DH... YOU acted like he kidnapped the Lindbergh baby... Ridiculous move in my opinion. He should have been the Yankees DH.

AGAW
That's a myth. How's it a myth? So he didn't expand the Yankees to the Asian market and thus expand the fanbase, merchandise and therefore revenue?
Morrissey
How's it a myth? So he didn't expand the Yankees to the Asian market and thus expand the fanbase, merchandise and therefore revenue? Any revenue (like hats, t-shirts, jersey's, bobble heads. ect) that comes from outside of the New York market gets split up and handed out to all 30 teams. So If someone in Japan buys a Yankee hat or Yankees Matsui jersey that money goes to the Yankees, Red Sox, Royals, Marlins, Angels, everyone. And Japanese ads in the stadium are not being sold at a higher clip than any American ad.

I have a feeling it heads to LA... Not that the Yankees need any more fans, just saying...
