Can the Jets become America’s team? CBS hopes so

August 24, 2010 at 4:20 pm by

NEW YORK — Given all the hullabaloo surrounding them — the playoff run last season, HBO’s “Hard Knocks” and Darrelle Revis’ holdout this traning camp — the New York Jets are getting hard to ignore.

CBS apparently knows that, too.

Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports, said today that “they have all the elements’ to be a national team. That’s good news for the network with AFC games, as they’re burdened with a conference whose overalll market sizes are smaller than the teams in the NFC.

“They are set up better than they’ve been in a long time to be a really big national team,,” McManus said today at the network’s annual NFL seminar in Manhattan, “and if they continue to win as they did last year and prove themselves in the playoffs, they’re very well postioned right now.

“Any promotion that is positive in nature is good for the Jets and good for CBS. We are the network of the AFC, and having a team that’s coming off an appearance in the AFC Championship Game and a team that has a lot of stuff swirling around out, which gets a lot of attention, not just in New York but nationally, obviously helps. The work that my pal Ross Greenburg’s done over at HBO doesn’t hurt at all.”

The AFC has several "America's Teams." It seems to just mean whoever is winning recently. The Steelers and Patriots have a huge following, although most people seem to hate the Pats now. Let's not forget the Colts too. Now I guess the numbers for the AFC must be lower, yet I'd suspect the reason why we see the Pats, Steelers and Colts so much on prime time is because they get high ratings usually.

It always irked me how after 9/11 the Pats became "America's Team" when we in NYC were the ones that suffered the most out of that. How does Boston benefit from that tragedy?

i dont care whether the jets are hated or liked. All that matters to me is the Jets win.

That makes no sense. Didn't you watch Hard Knocks? Rex clearly told the team that there are only 2 important things:

  1. Leading the league in ratings
  2. and PSL sales

I'd rather not be known as America's Team, but if it comes with us winning...cool. I'd rather be the bad boys everyone hates. But thats just because of after this long, I want to give everyone a healthy up yours!

If this continues, Im gonna puke, lose weight, blow a couple dudes and become a Patriot fan. Already shopping for a sweater vest. All this positive attention is creeping me the fguck out.

I support any thing you do muffin top because I l<3veu. Lets wait till we win something first. Expect a similar season. 2nd in AFCE, Wild Card birth, and hopefully a deep playoff run.

If that happened, I'd like to get back to the champ game against the Colts to see if our new additions are enough to get us over the top.
