First month FREE! January 12, 2006 -- Jets center Kevin Mawae said yesterday he loved playing for Herman Edwards, but Mawae wants the next coach of the Jets to give more tough love. "I would want someone to come in and be a little more forceful, a little more of disciplinarian, put the hammer down-type of coach," Mawae told The Post. "I loved playing for Herm and his style of coaching, but I think our team is a young team that needs a little bit more of a thumb-down on the guys kind of deal." Earlier this week, when Jets GM Terry Bradway asked Mawae's opinion on the next coach, Mawae said, "The same thing I told you." Mawae said he wasn't surprised Edwards left, adding he is happy for him. Yet Mawae, who is working as a postseason correspondent for NFL Network, said Edwards was too shy about digging into players' wallets. "The only way you discipline guys in this league is by taking their money," said Mawae, whose torn triceps should be fully healed by training camp. "You can tell them all you want, 'You can't do this' or 'You can't do that,' but they are not going to listen unless you hurt them where it hurts the most. "In the NFL, when you are making millions of dollars, the way it hurts the most is in your pocketbook. This is coming from a guy who is a player rep. I'm on the executive board of the union. My job is to protect the rights of the players and my job is also to protect the integrity of the game. I think by doing that, you make everybody accountable. "When you have guys who aren't doing things according to the way they should be done because there are no repercussions to it, I think you fine the guy. I think Herm, as a former player, didn't believe in fining players. He didn't think it was right to take other people's money. I'm of the opinion you do things professionally. Wasn't Kevin one of the team leaders and veteran committee members that met with Herm to discuss problems in locker room? Now Herm is too soft ? It is never ever the players fault with Kevin. It is always the coaches. The only coach he never ripped was Parcells. Geez I wonder why ?
