Round 3 – Brian Winters

Recommended Posts

In the 3rd round the New York Jets selected Brian Winters.  The 6’4″ 320lb offensive lineman played his college football at Kent State.

From CBS Sports.com

Though 33 of his 49 career starts have come at left tackle, Winters’ NFL future may lie at right tackle or perhaps even inside at guard. He has the requisite height to play on the outside, but he has developed into a standout based more on his physicality and toughness rather than elite athleticism.

Excellent durability. Played in all 49 games of his collegiate career. Showed his toughness in playing through a left shoulder dislocation (third game of the season) that left him at what he described as “70 percent.” The injury originally occurred during the state wrestling tournament during his sophomore year of high school and ultimately required surgery following the 2011 season.

WEAKNESSES

: May not possess the foot speed or flexibility required to remain at left tackle against NFL pass rushers. Has been able to rely on his strength and tenacity at this level but consistently plays with a high pad level, negating his own power and losing out on the leverage battle. Projected by many as a guard but has no experience inside. Shoulder injury requires a close medical evaluation.

At first glance this is bad news if your name is Vladimir Ducasse.  The Jets are cleaning the roster of Mike Tannenbaum draft picks and Vlad has done nothing to convince the Jets that he is ready to start.  With the departure of both guards from last year (Brandon Moore is still a free agent and Matt Slauson signed with the Bears), Winters has a great opportunity in front of him.

Here is a highlight video for Brian Winters.

Idzik loveeeeeeeeez his board, I guess. I like taking guards, though.

Here is what I like about Idzik so far.  He is cleaning up every one of Tannenbaum's mistakes in year one.  Well he is trying hard to do it anyhow.

He could have let Sanchez stink it up this year.  Run Vlad out there and nobody would have questioned him.  Instead he is taking the hit and replacing so many players now.  Pretty cool.

These guys seen Warford go off the board and panicked. You missed out on a 3x SEC G and instead have to settle for a converted T in the MEC. Idzik, really? Your really staying true to your big board? He knew dam well this was a reach.

Guard is the one position I don't worry about that as much (converting).  They say his footwork is slow but he has the size.  Put him at guard and let him maul people.

On what he was hearing from teams about his position as being either a guard or a tackle in the NFL…

I have, which is perfectly fine for me. I got thrown in (at guard) at the Senior Bowl and I feel that was real comfortable for me as days went on. I feel like that’s where I can excel at the next level.

On whether he played any guard in college…

I did in some situations. At the whole Senior Bowl I (played) it.

Positives: he has no fear of public backlash and could care less what is said about him. Does nothing with the intent of generating buzz or headlines. Just does his job.

Negatives: those same virtues could lead him to keeping Rex around.

I think Rex needs a leader around him to help him stay in line.  If he gets that he can be a really good coach.  The defense will always be so strong with Rex around, if Geno works out Rex is here to stay.

Your coach has to be your leader. He can't be a specialist or a part-time guy--the whole team has to fear and respect him. Rex is his father, and will suffer the same way.

Nope you are wrong.  I know a little bit about leadership because I am such a great and fearless leader.  But that isn't the point, the point is that Rex isn't his father.  He is a leader.  He just needs help buttoning that inside button on his pants after a meal.  He also needs help keeping his mouth closed at times.  No biggie.  He will learn.

Well I mean, he can't sit back and do nothing. Plus the mistakes are greatly exacerbated by the atrocious QB play of Sanchez. The rest is that sticking with his board and leaving no stone unturned.

As a tackle. He'll be a great guard.

Co-sign.  Smart, smart move to take a guy who has size and skill, but does not grade out at T, and convert him to G.  Most of his few current weaknesses will be complete non-factors at G.
