NFL Power Rankings Week 4

Week 3 brought many crazy events to the NFL landscape. After trading their best offensive player, the Browns won their first game, while Trent Richardson’s new team, the Colts, knocked off the mighty Niners on the road. The Giants, Redskins, and Steelers are sitting at an ugly 0-3 while the upstart Dolphins and Bengals got huge wins. After next week, the season may be over for some teams.

1. Denver Broncos SAME: Another game, another huge performance by Peyton Manning. With all the weapons, will anyone be able to slow down the Denver offense, let alone stop them?

2. Seattle Seahawks SAME: It wasn’t much of a shock that Seattle spanked the Jags. Russell Wilson is looking very good and this team’s leader as a sophomore quarterback.

3. New Orleans Saints UP 3: Drew Brees had quite the game at home against Arizona. However, the big difference between this year’s team and last year’s is the defense, which held the Cardinals to seven points and intercepted Carson Palmer twice.

4. Green Bay Packers DOWN 1: Despite forcing four turnovers and having a fourth quarter lead, the Packers collapsed and Aaron Rodgers couldn’t win it at the end. This team has a lot of potential, but there are still plenty of issues.

5. New England Patriots UP 2: It was against a completely dysfunctional Bucs team at home, but Tom Brady is getting on a better page with his receivers, particularly Kenbrell Thompkins, who scored twice. They’re 3-0 and getting healthier, so watch out.

6. Cincinnati Bengals UP 4: Thanks to a balanced running game and a little bit of luck, Cincinnati upset the mighty Packers. Andy Dalton wound up outdueling Aaron Rodgers. Who saw that one coming?

7. Baltimore Ravens UP 4: This was a statement win that showed the Ravens are still legit. They dominated the Texans on both sides of the ball without Ray Rice, proving they are undoubtedly a playoff team.

8. Atlanta Falcons DOWN 3: The Falcons lost another road game and are now two games behind New Orleans in the division. The clutch end game plays were not there for Matt Ryan, who threw a pick when trying to make a comeback. The defense continues to be a problem.

9. San Francisco 49ers DOWN 5: The Colts’ defense completely grounded Colin Kaepernick and the Niners’ offense. Now the team has to play in St. Louis on a short week without Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis. If San Fran goes 1-3, they could be in serious trouble.

10. Chicago Bears DOWN 1: Pittsburgh gave it a fight, but the Bears’ defense turned this one into a blowout. Jay Cutler has been playing like a different QB this year, and that’s been key.

11. Miami Dolphins UP 1: The Dolphins got a huge home win over Atlanta thanks to some clutch play by the ever-improving Ryan Tannehill. With the defense that Miami has, they’re a legit threat to New England in the AFC East.

12. Indianapolis Colts UP 2: Trent Richardson helped give the Colts’ offense a new dynamic, despite limited playing time. With the show they put on in San Francisco, Andrew Luck and company are frightening for any defense.

13. Houston Texans DOWN 5: The Texans forgot to get off the bus at Baltimore. After going down early and having to abandon the running game, Houston was sluggish the rest of the way, and could be in real trouble in the AFC South.

14. Kansas City Chiefs DOWN 1: With a lot of middle of the pack teams beating elite teams, the Chiefs fell a spot despite beating Philly and moving 3-0. But they do deserve to be higher with the way the defense is playing, and they’ll surely move up if they send the Giants to 0-4 next week.

15. Dallas Cowboys SAME: This was the most complete game that the Cowboys have played in quite some time. Tony Romo was spot on, DeMarco Murray was a monster, and the defense was ferocious. There’s no reason this team shouldn’t win the NFC East.

16. Carolina Panthers UP 2: It was an absolute annihilation as the Panthers’ defense recorded seven sacks, forced three turnovers, and shut out the Giants 38-0. This was a breath of fresh air for Cam Newton, who looked as good as he has all season.

17. Detroit Lions UP 2: It was impressive to see the Lions go on the road without Reggie Bush and not shoot themselves in the foot. If this team continues to mature, don’t be surprised if you see them in the playoffs.

18. Washington Redskins DOWN 2: Things are bad in the nation’s capital. The Skins are 0-3, Robert Griffin III is now Robert Garbage Time III, and they could be out of the playoff race very soon.

19. Tennessee Titans UP 8: A huge comeback victory capped by a touchdown with 15 seconds to go has me believing in the Titans. The defense is legit and it looks like Jake Locker is starting to really became the first round QB he was expected to be.

20. New York Giants DOWN 3: The Giants look awful. The defense is a complete mess, they can’t run the ball, and Eli Manning is turning the ball over left and right. They go to Arrowhead next week in an effort to avoid a likely season ending 0-4 start.

21. Philadelphia Eagles SAME: So much for Chip Kelly taking over the NFL. The Eagles looked lost against Kansas City, especially on defense, and their fast paced offense isn’t going to be enough to beat teams by itself. Turnovers by Michael Vick aren’t helping the case.

22. St. Louis Rams DOWN 2: After completely rolling over to the Cowboys, the Rams look like nothing special. Sam Bradford and the offensive line got eaten up by a good pass rush, and with barely any running game, St. Louis can’t hang with the big boys.

23. New York Jets UP 6: Geno Smith threw for over 300 yards, passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third, and the Jets had two 100-yard receivers as they knocked off the Bills. If the offense can continue to improve, they can be a surprisingly competitive team.

24. Tampa Bay Buccaneers DOWN 2: As expected, the Bucs were completely flat in New England. Their defense wasn’t awful, but only three points by the offense is not enough. Opposing defenses are not taking Josh Freeman seriously, which is why Doug Martin is seeing a lot of stacked boxes.

25. Arizona Cardinals DOWN 1: It’s hard to ask for a win in the Super Dome, but the Cardinals didn’t even put up a fight. Carson Palmer threw a pair of picks and the defense was a joke.

26. Pittsburgh Steelers DOWN 3: Big Ben and company put up a fight, but to no avail, as turnovers killed them against the Bears. They are improving on offense and they won’t face Chicago’s D every week, but it’d be a tall task for this 0-3 team to make the playoffs.

27. Buffalo Bills DOWN 2: The Bills fought hard, but no E. J. Manuel magic was had this week. The injury to C. J. Spiller is not considered serious, but he hasn’t been the dynamic playmaker he was expected to be.

28. Cleveland Browns UP 3: Brian Hoyer came out of nowhere to lead the Browns to their first win after losing their best offensive player. In the long run, this may hurt the team trying to get the top overall pick, but it showed an impressive amount of fight.

29. San Diego Chargers DOWN 1: Phillip Rivers played another solid game, but the running game is not doing him any favors, leading to another crushing loss for the Chargers. You stay heartbroken, San Diego.

30. Oakland Raiders SAME: It was really hard to expect them to put up much of a fight in Denver Monday night. However, things are looking better than the two teams below them.

31. Minnesota Vikings DOWN 5: On the flip side of Cleveland, Minnesota was atrocious. Their defense allowed Hoyer to pick them apart. Christian Ponder is nothing to get excited about. And Adrian Peterson, the Purple Jesus, hasn’t quite lived up to that nickname.

32. Jacksonville Jaguars SAME: We saw this one coming. The Jaguars are inexplicably bad. In every aspect of the game. There’s really nothing more to say.

30th was a bad assessment last week and 23rd is a worse assessment this week.  Moving up 6 sounds about right but you were wrong at 30th and so your wrong at 23rd.  The Giants, Ram, and Eagles ahead of us, please, I don't think so.

2nd edit:  I forgot to add Washington!

Wow a lot of weird rankings here, Redskins, Giants both 0-3, but they stay in the middle of the pack in the rankings, yet the Steelers don't get the same benefit at 0-3, and are in the bottom 7 (where they belong, but they at least showed some fight unlike the Giants), the Jets need to put up higher than both the Skins, and Vagiants, and having the Packers at 4 after a horrible lose to fall to 1-2 as A Rodgers proves once again he is a front running QB, put him in an adverse situation late he folds like a busted straight, and yet the team with the same 1-2 record that beat those Packers, and have the same credibility as benefit of the doubt despite their 1-2 record the 49ers are ranked 3 spots lower, a little more thought should be put into these instead of copy, and pasting the week befores, and making slight adjustments, and taking no longer than the time it takes to scratch your balls with 1 hand, and copy, and paste with the other between dinner, and dessert.

Here is a more fair power rankings.

1. Denver Broncos (Peyton Manning nuff said, AFC will go through Denver book it!)

1A. Seahawks (best built team in all 3 phases of the game offense is balanced, defense is proven no fluke, specials well special, if they can get home field through out playoffs you can just punch their ticket to Metlife in February, can't see anyone winning in that stadium in a playoff game with how good this team is).

3. Saints (with Payton back calling the plays, and his presence, along with a Ryan coached D this team is dangerous, question will be does Brees have enough help outside of J Graham, Sproles, and an aging Colston to keep pace if needed when Rob's D gets foiled like it has in the past against great offenses?)

4. Patriots (Still have Brady, and they are winning with defense for the 1st time since their last SB win, will Brady get enough help, get healthy with Gronk, and Amendola, and gel with some of the younger guys, if so watch out)!

5. Ravens (they were unfairly pitted on the road against a Denver team foaming at the mouth for revenge, NFL should have sucked it up, and scheduled another game not including Baltimore, and give Baltimore the Sunday night game at home, after 2 very good bounce back wins they showed they are every bit ready to defend that hardware when January rolls around)

6. Chiefs (Reid, and Smith have added a good enough offense complimented by game breakers like J Charles, and D Bowe to give them a little extra to fear week in week out, but the 2 biggest things that will keep the Chiefs up on these rankings is a defense holding teams to an incredible 12 PPG, and they have the 2nd best home field advantage in all of the NFL, this team will not disappear they are for real)

7. Dolphins (2 impressive wins in Indy who just dismantled the 49ers on the road, and a huge comeback victory at home against a limping Falcons team, took care of business like they should against the Browns in Cleveland, the offense is much improved with Tannehill, and Philibin having a full year together installing that Packers offense, and adding Wallace opens up the middle of the field as he takes the top off the secondary, Defense is very good, this could be the year the Pats are ripe for a let down season, Dolphins could be good enough to take it from them, running game needs to step up thou for this team to take the next step).

8. Bears (finally coached by an offensive minded HC, and taking the conservative reigns off Cutler, Marshall, and new added much needed weapons in 2nd year WR Jeffrey, steady TE Bennett, and a couple other familiar faces, and Trestman did this without messing with the defensive make up, and strategy, Bears might be just good enough to hold off the rest of the North this year, its all on Cutler taking the leap to elite status)

9. Bengals (after a heart breaking loss at Chicago in the final seconds week 1, all they did is take it to the Steelers, and find a way to fend of the Packers in a whacky back, and forth game, looking for their 3rd straight playoff appearance, the only real questions are is Dalton good enough, and can M Lewis grow a pair to coach like a man in the playoffs, D is stout, run game has a dual dynamic with Bernard, and BJGE)

10. Colts (tough loss at home VS the Dolphins, might have been a little unprepared for the type of team Miami seems to be this year, but they just took it to the defending NFC Champions in their house getting to 2-1, adding Richardson should take some heat off Luck, and I see this team cruising to a AFC South Championship if they can hold the Texans offense in check in the 2 matchups this year)

11. Texans (sitting at 2-1, but giving up 82 points in 3 games they have lost their D identity from last year, and they are the softest team year in year out)

12. Dallas (NFC East is theirs to lose, can Romo, and Co. not screw it up)

13. Lions (have the offensive horses to keep up with anyone, and a nasty front 7, poor coaching staff, and injurys seem to foil them each year)

14. 49ers (got smoked late in Seattle, thou score looked worse than the game actually was, and then had an emotional let down from a selfish star D player getting himself probably kicked out for the better part of the season between rehab, and league discipline, team should regroup to get themselves positioned to get into the playoffs)

15. Packers (Rodgers needs to start stepping up late in games, if their is a chink in his armor it is his lack of 4th quarter heroics, consider M Sanchez had more 4th quarter/OT game winning drives in 2010 then Rodgers has in his career playoffs included, should be there in the end to contend for the WC)

16. Falcons (once healthy they should start winning some games, but if it's not soon it could be to late)

17. Titans (Greg Williams rejuvinated Defense, and a revamped offensive line make the Titans a team not to take lightly, if you don't prepare for a fight, they will kick you in the teeth, and more than likely have the edge on the scoreboard, well prepared teams can beat them thou, and think the Titans are a year, or 2 away, Locker is the wild card)

18. NY Jets (Rex Ryan has the best front 7 since his glory days in Baltimore, they are young, but fast, tough, and starting to look like they are developing a little mean swagger streak to them, can they make up for a declined secondary?  G Smith has shown flashes of his talents, but also made a lot of rookie mistakes as expected, with a little consistent improvment from the offense, and the D continues to get better, scary thought, they could surprise, and be there late in the year, tough Gauntlent next 6 games will define their season)

19. Panthers (when C Newton plays with a level head they have a chance to win every Sunday, and the front 7 is one of the best in the league, need to get much more consistent, and play in a tough division, with a 1-2 start they have an uphill fight)

20. Chargers (Rivers has some left in the tank, and Gates seams to be healthier then years past, no run game to speak of thou is hurting the team, defense is not bad, and can keep bad offenses in check easily, I don't see enough thou from them to challenge the Chiefs, and Broncos)

The Rest

21. Eagles

22. Steelers

23. Rams

24. Redskins

25. Cardinals

26. Bills

27. Browns

28. Raiders

29. Giants

30. Vikings

31. TB

32. Jaguars

This is what it looks like when people refuse to admit they were wrong.  When Buffalo almost beats NE they're up & coming & better than everyone thought.  When the Jets almost beat NE we suck, and when the Jets beat this up-and-coming and better than everyone thought team, then they really did suck all along.

The Jets committed 20 penalties, lost the turnover battle 2-0, had an obvious and crucial Bills turnover stolen by the refs, and still won.  So I think the rest of the league, and the a-holes who make these rankings, can suck our collective big green dick.

The skins are probably the worst team in football right now. Gimpy QB and their defense is crap.

Makes what RG3 did last year when he was healthy even more amazing.  Though the defense was SLIGHTLY better last season.  The fact that London Fletcher is still plodding around out there maybe makes the deal they made to trade up for RG3 look a little dumber.

They got their QB, which is cool, but they haven't been able to build around him (at least on the other side of the ball (after making a Saints-trade-entire-draft-for-Ricky-Williams kind of deal.

To be fair, it's been difficult to add anything the last two years with their cap penalties resulting from the attempts to circumvent the rules around the lockout.  They have a good bit of room next year, as the penalties expire.

That said, overall I agree.  Cheapest, most effective way to build is through the draft -- but I think it goes back much further than the RG3 trade.  Remember that one year they drafted Rocky McIntosh (I think?) and no one else?  The old "I don't think the Jets understand what the draft is all about" clip from back in the day relates very well to these Redskins.

One thing I learned this year replacing Bart Scott with Demario Davis?  SPEED(youth) KILLS ON DEFENSE!!!!

Agreed.  The Jets have the power to make any team in the NFL suck.  All we have to do is beat them.  If we beat the Bronco's we would read the next day how Peyton's neck must not be completely healed yet and his prior wins must have been flukes.

Week 4 NFL Power Rankings: Looking Through the Results

By Rich MacLeod  @richmacleod  on Sep 24 2013, 12:24p  4

Ron Antonelli

Stay connected

Gang Green has moved up considerably.

Here are how some of the big media outlets rate the Jets relative to the rest of the league going into Week 4.

SB Nation (Ryan Van Bibber): 18 (+5)

This was the first week the Jets defense has allowed an opponent to reach 20 points. Geno Smith is playing well enough to hold off any meaningful chance of Mark Sanchez returning to the starting job. Rex Ryan might survive beyond this season as head coach.

ESPN: 18 (+10)

The Titans and Jets meet in a battle of surprising 2-1 teams. Geno Smith threw for 331 yards Sunday, a total Jake Locker has reached once in his 14-start career.

FOX Sports (Brian Billick): 18 (+11)

The defensive line in New York may push the line of scrimmage better than any other front in the league right now, but 20 penalties in a game is concerning. This is the first time a team in the NFL won a game with 20+ penalties since the Browns did it in 1951. 1951!

Yahoo! (Shutdown Corner): 22 (+3)

I'm not buying them as a contender or anything, but they look like they might have something in rookie quarterback Geno Smith.

CBS (Pete Prisco): 17 (+9)

Who had them at 2-1 after three games? They are the team for now in New York. Can it stay that way?

CBS (Pat Kirwan): 17 (+10)

No one in New York saw this coming with the Jets the talk of the town and the Giants in disarray.

New York Daily News: 19 (+8)

They've got a top 10 defense.

Where do you think the Jets should rank?
