JetNation Prospect Profile: Notre Dame OT Joe Alt

Recommended Posts

Joe-Alt-scaled.jpg

Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt is a player who is unlikely to be on the board if the Jets stay at pick ten.  However, there are some draft scenarios that suggest it’s not entirely out of the question.  Given the opportunity to take Alt to improve their offensive line, the Jets would be crazy not to pull the trigger unless there’s a trade down opportunity that nets them a haul of picks.

So our latest JetNation player profile along with Taliese Fuaga, Payton Wilson and Olu Fashanu is Joe Alt.

Offensive Tackle, Notre Dame, #76

Height: 6-8

Weight: 322

(Complete measurements pending NFL combine)

Hometown: North Oaks, MN

High School: Totino-Grace

Class/Age: Junior, 20 years old

Recruit: ★★★★

Film Study

Games Watched: Notre Dame vs Ohio State (2023), Notre Dame vs Ohio State (2022), Notre Dame vs Clemson (2022)

Balance: Alt’s background as a converted tight-end can sometimes work against him, finding himself over-extended at times, but very rarely does Alt find himself knocked down.

Pass Protection: This is where Alt shines. Fundamentally sound and can handle stunts with relative ease. Seals the edge for quick passing game stuff well.

Run Blocking:  Is good at sealing the edge. Can get out in space with quickness. Can overextend at times in an attempt to get to the second level.

Lateral Mobility/Athleticism: As mentioned above, a converted tight-end gives Alt better athleticism than expected for somebody 320+ playing RT. Moves with decent fluidity in the run game. Has quickness when needing to recover.

Point of Attack Power: Alt isn’t going to be confused with a thumper, somebody who can lay the wood down on impending pass rushers with power, but does contain enough to avoid being knocked backwards.

Hands:  Doesn’t overextend hand placement. In pass pro, he’s able to maintain good hands.

Anchor:  Handles power and speed rushes well with a solid anchor.

Strength: Uses his size and frame well in the run game.

Size: He is able to use his size and length to keep defenders at length.

Versatility: Was a mainstay at left tackle for the Fighting Irish, but would move along the line depending on formation. Not sure I see him being anything other than a LT at the NFL level.

Notes:

  • His father, John, was a former NFL player for the Chiefs. Brother, Mark, is a professional hockey defenseman.
  • As a true freshman at Notre Dame, played both offensive tackle and tight end.
  • 2023 finalist for the Outland Trophy.
  • Unanimously named to the 2023 All-American Team.

Summary:

A mainstay of the Notre Dame offensive line, Joe Alt projects as one of the first offensive line to hear his name called early in April at the NFL Draft. In the best possible terms possible, Alt is a guy who’s always just doing what he needs to be doing. He’s seemingly always in the right spot, and shines in the passing game.

When profiling offensive lineman for the Jets, expectations are high. A player is needed to be a Year 1, Week 1 starter to protect Aaron Rodgers and Alt fits that bill. It probably won’t be flashy, it probably won’t make any major highlight reels, but Alt is a guy that you place at the LT spot and watch him for years protecting a quarterback’s blindside.

Food for thought:  our 1st, 3rd, and 4th is the exact value as the Giants' 6th overall pick.  There is a pretty good chance getting to that pick would get you Alt.

Downside is, you walk out of the first 3 rounds with only 1 prospect, and after that you have one 4th and one 6th.....aka you better hit on your 6th overall pick.  If you think he's a future All-Pro guy though, I'm down to roll the dice.  God knows we need a piece like that on the OL.

Remember how happy everyone was when the Jets won a meaningless game against the Commanders in week 16? Wins like that are why the Jets miss out on prospects like Alt.

As far as Alt goes, I get lots of D'Brickshaw Ferguson vibes. He'll be a long-time starter and will do a solid job at the most important position on the line, but he probably isn't going to be a game-changer or make any highlight-reel type blocks in the run-game. Seems like a safe pick without super high-end upside.

That's not exactly what I'm looking for from a top 10 LT prospect, but as we've seen, you can do much worse than that at LT (see: Becton, Mekhi). So if Alt is there, yeah, run that card to the podium. Just know that you're buying a Chevy Silverado for the price of a Tundra.

Also the pats are going to get a totally premium player in the draft due to our huge 'culture changing' win over them last game of the year.

IMHO, Alt is the MVP of the draft.  Hard to say which QB's will work out and which won't but that aside, Alt is the best player in the draft and the one that will benefit a team the most for the longest.  Been saying this all season long.  Not just the measurables and what you see on the film, but the intangibles as well.  If I was a GM in search of an elite OT and core player for over a decade, I'd trade away a high draft pick in order to move up and get Alt.  He is that valuable.  Nice of the Jets to win a few meaningless games AGAN just so they could miss out on Alt.

I don't agree. Alt will be an excellent run blocker.  Much better than Brick.

Grow up!  Had we won one more game you'd be lamenting the guy we could have had at 10.

The jets late season wins have cost them.

Vernon gholston instead of matt ryan

Zach wilson instead of Trevor lawrence

Quinnen instead of Nick Bosa

This year we desperately need an LT there are two that stand above the others and one that stands above everyone.

We will end up with a RT prospect instead of the LT guys we desperately need.   (And hand the pats either marvin harrision jr or a guy like Jayden daniels.)

In a lost season among many jets lost seasons we ALWAYS win totally meaningless games at the end of the year that hurt come draft time, enjoy that 7th win this year come draft day,

And the "enjoy this win all offseason" win against the Pats.  Not only did it cost us a guy like Alt, it's going to help the Pats get a possible FQB or great WR (or a haul in a trade down).

Even worse, when we still had a last chance at the playoffs (against the Dolphins), the team completely laid an egg and nearly got ZW killed (though ZW, of course, has gotten all the blame).  But Woody chose to bring Salesman back.  Yay!
