Coles????

Does anyone else feel it is possible that Coles won't be Jet on Monday? The key word here is "possible" not guaranteeing anything.

This has been a very weird situation. The Jets offered to guarantee the last 2 years of Coles contract. He raised heck about it. Wanted an extension and more money. Didn't show up for the voluntary work outs, and threatened to hold out later on.

All of a sudden it went away. No extension was given, and Coles hasn't made a peep since.

Something is wrong. Coles is not a player that is told to shut up, and shuts up, without getting his way. I love Coles, but the guy can make a lot of trouble.

The only guess I have, is that he was given permission to seek a trade, perhaps a 3rd rounder. This might quiet him down. He can make more money, and opening his mouth would only down grade his value, and the likely hood of his getting his trade and more money.

If this is true, one of two things happened.

1) no body was interested

2) He found some one, and it will go down draft day contingent on the draft board at the time.

It is just to quiet.

In answer to my own question. Duh Nevermind

March 28, 2008 -- The Jets, after spending some $140 million in free agent contracts this offseason on players who have never worn their uniform, yesterday took care of one of their most respected, hardest-working players.

Laveranues Coles, who entered this offseason with two remaining years on his contract worth $11 million but wanted an extension to ensure he'd finish his career as a Jet, yesterday agreed to that extension. Terms of the deal were not immediately available, but it's believed Coles had either two or three years added to his contract.

Coles earlier this offseason was critical of the Jets because he felt they were not going to honor his wish for an extension and he threatened to sit out the offseason conditioning program, which began last week. He didn't show up when the program began, a damaging blow considering his role as captain and one of the more popular players in the locker room.

Initially the Jets offered to guarantee the remaining $11 million of his deal, but Coles said he was more concerned wth the long-term security. When the Jets let Coles know they would work something out, he appeared at the conditioning program on Monday.

The extension allows the Jets to smartly avert the ugly public situation they allowed to fester and implode last year with left guard Pete Kendall, who was seeking $1 million added to his contract. The Jets steadfastly refused, ended up trading Kendall for a fourth-round pick and proceeded to struggle mightily on the offensive line all year - particularly at Kendall's position.

Coles and Jerricho Cotchery, who was awarded a new contract before last season, are the lifeblood of the Jets receiving corps and the Jets could not afford to break that up.

Yeah you nailed it with the 2nd post. But nobody is gonna touch that guaranteed money nor should they. The Jets though remain committed to removing off the field distractions unlike last year. So this is a good sign. Hopefully L.C. can remain healthy and productive.

He has the heart, toughness and desire. But he needs to avoid those lingering injuries.

I think it's a possibility. On the open market, a team interested in Coles would have given him more than $11M guaranteed anyway. They'd tear up the remaining 2 years (much to the delight of Coles) and give him a new deal with more guaranteed money, or at least as much guaranteed money on a longer deal.

But absent us trading for a veteran receiver ourselves, I don't think it's likely. Even WR's who go onto greatness can be garbage as rookies, and they're all supremely unlikely (as rookie starters) to match the production we'll get with (a healthy) Coles, greedy/insatiable douchebag that he is.

I doubt it, but my fingers will be crossed. Coles became my least favorite Jet this off season and there isn't much left in the tank with him anyway. The same crybaby **** with him year after year is getting old. Let him complain about somebody else's training camp being to hard.

The veteran receiver had been negotiating for an extension to his current contract and even skipped the first week of voluntary offseason workouts earlier this month. But Coles returned to the team Monday with only the promise of a compromise, and on Friday, an NFL source confirmed that Coles and the Jets agreed to have the remainder of the current contract guaranteed rather than extended. That deal will pay Coles $11 million for the next two seasons.

Coles, who turned 30 in December, wanted the kind of contract that would allow him to finish his career with the Jets. He'll have just turned 32 when this deal expires.

Coles, regarded as one of the league's toughest receivers and one of the team's most respected players, had an injury-filled season in 2007. He suffered a concussion as well as an ankle injury that cost him six games and ultimately landed him on injured reserve for the final two weeks.

He finished 2007 with 55 receptions for 646 yards, his lowest totals since his rookie season in 2000. It also was the first time since 2000 that Coles did not play in all 16 games.

If Coles can remain healthy and regain his productivity in 2008, there's a chance his contract could be revisited next offseason.

Coles had accused the team of lying to him about promises of a long-term deal. The team reportedly offered him the fully guaranteed contract - believed to be the first in franchise history - about a month ago.

The Jets proceeded cautiously with Coles' demands a year after their failed maneuverings with guard Pete Kendall. That rift lingered for months until Kendall was traded to the Redskins during training camp and continued to linger during the disappointing 4-12 season.

Just to stir the pot a bit, Tom Rock reported a day after the other article I posted that Coles WAS NOT given an extension.

Still wonder why he is so quiet

Because he has no leverage. He wanted an extension from the Jets, not someone else. Not because he loves the Jets so much, but they represented the team that was most likely to give him big bucks. He claimed he wanted security; something that made him uncuttable on this deal with potential for more years. Well we probably surprised him & his agent & caught them off-guard by offering to guarantee the remainder of this deal. It really left him with no argument. Even a new deal wouldn't have guaranteed anything beyond a couple of years. At best it would have guaranteed one more year because of a cap hit for cutting him too early.

He's under contract for 2 more years. We're not cutting him & he'd never sit out of enough games to get credit for the year, which would cost him $6M or whatever. Plus he loses one of his most alleged marketable characteristics: that he is a team-first guy. Well if he sits out with 2 years left on his deal, after getting $20M in bonus money since Washington swept him away from us, then that goes out the window. And what he'd be left with, to market himself, is he'll be 32 with a history of concussion(s) and nagging injuries, of average size & (by then) speed. And the Jets would get a cap credit the following season(s) for the salary he counted against the cap (that we would end up not paying him).

Which brings us back to my initial point: he had no leverage. He'll try this same thing again next year, no doubt.

He still manages to stay on the field. Your correct tho, he has some heart.
