I am beyond pissed off with UMass and their lousy performance for the 4th straight game.

My 2 thoughts of the night:

1. The refs were beyond awful. Totally lost control of the game

2. Greg Cronin is a crybaby. A team that good shouldnt have a coach that pathetic. At least Jack Parker earned the right to be a whiny bitch.

Luckily I have a date for Valentine's Day so I dont have to watch the train wreck called UMass hockey on Saturday.

Congrats to Gainzo and Lowell for their ass kicking handed out to BC. Those were huge points and its nice to see a team show up when they need too.

I hope they put on a good show Sat night and inch closer to a home playoff series. I want to be there and root on my sister school.

Saturday night at Tsongas is going to be rocking. I feel like Pete Caroll when he coached the Pats. I'm pumped and jacked!

Hey supah fans. You suck.

Lowell takes over the 4th spot.

Lowell even made the Globe today:

Eagles have blank expression

UMass-Lowell blitzes BC with flurry in third period

Even though the Boston College hockey team was playing in its own rink, UMass-Lowell refused to let the Eagles near the puck.

The River Hawks pushed BC around on the boards, blocked shooting lanes, and cleared rebounds from in front of goalie Nevin Hamilton while scoring shorthanded, on the power play, and at even strength as they seized a 6-0 victory before 3,847 at Conte Forum. That number had dwindled considerably by the halfway mark of the third period, as BC showed little sign of reviving its moribund offense.

UMass-Lowell had never before beaten BC by six goals. Hamilton earned the shutout with 27 saves. His last shutout was Nov. 15 at UMass-Amherst (22 saves in a 2-0 win). The last time BC was shut out at home was Feb. 22, 2008, by New Hampshire, and the last time the Eagles gave up six goals was Nov. 29, 1992, against Clarkson.

The teams came into the game tied for fifth place in Hockey East, and Lowell (14-13-0, 11-9-0) left the building in fourth, tied with UNH, 2 points ahead of BC (13-10-4, 8-8-4).

Ben Holmstrom scored in each of the first two periods to give the River Hawks a 2-0 advantage, then Lowell struck twice within 1:21 - the first goal a shorthanded game-breaker - to take charge. David Vallorani also scored a pair.

But it was Nick Schaus's shorthanded tally at 6:44 of the third, putting Lowell in front, 3-0, that tore the heart from the BC bench.

"Through the first two periods, we're still right in the hockey game," said BC coach Jerry York. "We're down, 2-0, but we were getting some chances. But just the third period . . . the shorthanded goal was a real backbreaker for us. John [Muse] made the first save, he made the second save, and we just kind of wanted to go on the power play, we didn't realize we had to go back and defend. The whole third period was dictated by Lowell."

In the first period, BC had four power-play chances and came up empty. On the final man-advantage, awarded at 16:08 when Steve Capraro was sent to the box for interference, the Eagles managed a few shots, mostly from the perimeter, but couldn't get their hands on a rebound for two minutes.

By the end of the second period, BC was 0 for 7 on the power play and finished 0 for 9. The River Hawks were killing the Eagles along the boards, pushing them off pucks, and preventing them from getting possession.

"I was really proud of how we played in the third period," said UMass-Lowell coach Blaise MacDonald, whose team also beat BC at Conte Forum Jan. 16, a 4-3 overtime win. "Twenty-one shots on net and we just did a really nice job."

York agreed. "They were clearly the better hockey team than we were in the third period," he said.

Holmstrom got his first goal on the power play at 2:05 of the first, picking up Maury Edwards's rebound and tucking it past Muse. He doubled the Lowell lead at 10:59 of the second, crashing the net and deflecting Patrick Cey's pass inside the left post.

"We were fortunate to get some bounces go our way early," said MacDonald. "Nevin Hamilton was clearly the best player on the ice. He gave us a chance to get a little rhythm to our game that was a little disjointed because of all the penalty killing we had."

Lowell took advantage of a BC turnover early in the third. When Benn Ferriero lost a pass at the right point in the Lowell zone, Mark Roebothan claimed the puck and skated up ice for a shot. Holmstrom got a stab at the first rebound before Schaus buried the second. At 8:05, Vallorani got his first, picking up his own rebound and flipping it past Muse.

Vallorani added a power-play score at 12:15 and Nick Monroe finished it off with a shorthanded goal at 19:44.

"That's the way we want to play against anybody," said MacDonald. "We've got to get the puck to smart areas and see if we can get it back."

boy BC must suck this year:D

Congrats on beating Alabama-Huntsville. That must have been an epic clash of titans ;)

BC is BC. They still get all the blue chip recruits but Lowell is pretty decent this year. The 4 goal 3rd period with a thing of beauty last night.

Big series next weekend in Amherst- Maine at UMass friday and saturday. If either team sweeps and Providence sweeps Merrimack it could get very interesting heading into the final 2 weeks.

Next Weekend's games:

Northeastern/BU- I would pay to see them battle again... the crowds will be awesome, the play should be good, but there is another series I will be watching... BU should kick the crap out of them and take over 1st place after NU's terrible performances against an inferior UMass team this weekend

Lowell at Vermont- The make or break weekend for Lowell. After a strong weekend series against BC, they are prepared to make a run at the home playoff spot. However, the letdown in the 3rd period sat. night could impact them mentally as they prepare for a Vermont team that struggled mightily against Merrimack. Vermont still has hopes of the #1 or #2 spot and need to battle if they want to get there.

BC/UNH- Battle of two teams that should be better than they are... its a mystery why both teams have struggled all season. BC gets crushed at home, but salvaged a point against Lowell on Sat. UNH tied and beat Providence... Who knows what will happen, but BC trails UNH by 3pts and needs to make a move if they want to repeat as champs.

Providence/Merrimack- Providence needs 4pts if they are serious about making the playoffs. They have shown some spurts in the 2nd half, but is there enough time to come back?? Merrimack is once again playing spoiler by beating VT on friday night and played them tough sat. Merrimacks playoff hopes are almost gone as they trail 8th place umass by 9pts with 6 games to play.

Maine at UMass- Battle for 7th- These teams seem to battle every year for a playoff spot and this year is no different. One of these teams really needs to sweep or win and tie to break away from the other. UMass comes off a strong weekend against Northeastern where they let one get away friday and won at Mathews on sat. Maine got crushed by BU friday but showed some pride and getting a point off of the soon-to-be-crowned national champs BU. Maine never seems to play well in Amherst, and hopefully that continues next weekend.

Should be interesting. Probably be a pair of 5-5 ties.

I agree BU takes over the lead.

BU is like the former olympic Russian Hockey teams - I'm just hopping the real NU pulls out a "miracle" ;)

Side note - yes, I am aware that the main players on that 80's olympic team were terriers. Trust me, I live in Boston - I hear about it ALL THE TIME....still.

Speaking of which, I'll never forget the documentary about the 80 Olympic team where Eruzione (who has made a living off his Olympic glory with speaking engagements and working with BU as - who knows what) said that his best friend always kids him - "Mike, if that puck was a couple of inches to the right or the left, you'd be digging ditches for a living right now." Just goes to show you that although hard work is a big part of your achievements -luck and timing are a real nice compliment.

Niagara is a 2 sport dominant team this year, there RPI would include them

in the dance, since Siena is in division (ranked 30) they probably will be

left out of bball dance

where is Lowell/Umass and the other NU?? :D
