QB dept. : jets' situation....worst in the nfl ? ? ?

~ ~ • Idzik's challenge :
The New York Jets' situation at quarterback might be the worst in the NFL from a financial standpoint. Mark Sanchez has significant guaranteed money in his contract. As a result, the Jets rank sixth in cap space for quarterbacks after ranking 31st in Total QBR and 30th in NFL passer rating last season. The team hired John Idzik from the Seahawks to fix the cap mess and help rebuild the roster, but options are limited in the short term.

The Jets made it to the playoffs in the past with Sanchez at QB, the Broncos made it with Tebow at QB, the Bears got to the Super Bowl with Grossman at QB and the Ravens won the Super Bowl with Dilfer at QB.

Maybe the Jets have a Rex Ryan situation more than a QB situation.

6th in cap space dedicated to QB ay? So tempted to turn into Revis thread.

If the point you are alluding to is that all the dead money wrapped up at QB, to produce zero starters, is going to cost us the best player the Jets have ever drafted. Then yeah, agreed, it's a good point.

Now you begin to understand the poroblem

....Yes, I think I've shown I understand the problem for a while now. Fits wha I've been saying for weeks now. The question becomes do YOU yet understand the problem? Quick guess will be no, which would be the correct answer.

Aren't you a fan of a bad team that just gave a 30 year old 3B with back issues an 8 year mega deal that is totally guaranteed? How do you not get the thinking yet?

We have a QB problem this season if you are mainly considering the cap money tied up.  That's nothing new in this league.  Contrary to popular opinion here, there are teams with as bad or even worse situations considering just the quality of play on the field (albeit not many).  If we have a promising rookie next season and all the guys on the roster this year are cleared out with a nothing but a manageable cap hit as a reminder, that's a situation I can live with.

No fewer than 14 quarterbacks have changed teams this offseason,

with four projected starters and 10 No. 2s in that group. Matt Flynn,

Colt McCoy and Carson Palmer (reportedly close to being dealt to

the Cards) are the latest. Of the 14, only two have won a playoff

game -- Matt Hasselbeck and Alex Smith.

Nobody, it appears, wants Tim Tebow,
who has a playoff win and an 8-6 record as a starter. The Jets are
shopping Tebow, but they can't find a taker. Obviously, his shortcomings
as a passer are a big reason, but the entire New York debacle has
tarnished his reputation. It's like he's radioactive and no one wants to
get near him, which is what happens when you put a limited, over-hyped
quarterback in the biggest media market. Nice guy, though.

Tebow's Top 10

espnny_g_tebow_d1_203.jpg

Tim Tebow's days in a New York Jets uniform appear to be close to an
end. ESPNNewYork.com looks back on his Big Apple experience. Tebow's Top 10 photo.png

Some personnel types felt the 49ers would've been a logical landing spot for Tebow,

backing up Colin Kaepernick and being able to run the read-option, but they traded

Monday for McCoy. So much for that.

Other potential fits ? The Seahawks need a backup. Pete Carroll is down to one

quarterback, Russell Wilson, joking Monday on Twitter that Seattle oldies

Jim Zorn and Dave Kriegare trying out. Carroll called Tebow a first-round talent before the
2010 draft, but he recently told the New York Daily News that Tebow was a
"major distraction" for Mark Sanchez. Don't bet on Tebow showing up in Seattle.

Chicago ? The Jets' former quarterbacks coach, Matt Cavanaugh, has
the same position with the Bears. Sorry, but it's hard to imagine Jay Cutler
being cool with the idea of coming off the field for a handful of
plays. Tebow's former coach with the Broncos, Josh McDaniels, is the
Patriots' offensive coordinator. Tom Brady's backups are Ryan Mallett and Mike Kafka,
neither of whom is entrenched. Bill Belichick probably could figure out
a way to use Tebow, but he'd have to decide if it's worth the baggage
that comes along with him.

The Bucs are an interesting team. Josh Freeman is the incumbent, but he's heading

into the final year of his contract. His backups are Dan Orlovsky and Adam Weber.
Tebow would be a huge draw in the state of Florida. Hey -- who knows ?
-- maybe the Jets are holding on to Tebow to include him in a Darrelle Revis package.

Here are the 14 quarterbacks who changed teams. As you can see, it's hardly a "Who's Who?"

Projected starters: Flynn (Raiders/trade), Kevin Kolb (Bills/free agent), Palmer

(Cards/proposed trade) and Smith (Chiefs/trade).

Likely No. 2s: Jason Campbell (Browns/free agent), Matt Cassel (Vikings/free agent)

, Chase Daniel (Chiefs/free agent), Ryan Fitzpatrick (Titans/free agent),

Bruce Gradkowski (Steelers/free agent), Hasselbeck (Colts/free agent), Josh Johnson

(Bengals/free agent), Luke McCown (Saints/free agent), McCoy (49ers/trade) and

Drew Stanton (Cards/free agent).

Jets QB Mark Sanchez 'more comfortable' with West Coast system while training with Jeff Garcia

Once it became clear that Marty Mornhinweg would become the Jets' new

offensive coordinator, Mark Sanchez started reaching out for help to

learn the OC's West Coast system. Most notably, he

struck up a relationship with former Pro Bowl QB Jeff Garcia -- who

played under Mornhinweg.

Now, in a USA Today report, Garcia says that Sanchez is picking up

the system and growing accustomed to what he will be running.

"He's doing an excellent job -- the progress Mark has made over the

past three weeks is definitely very positive,'' Garcia told USA TODAY

Sports.

Garcia then went on to say that the studying is paying off for Sanchez.

"Mark is definitely getting more comfortable speaking the West Coast

terminology," Garcia said. "He had a brief glimpse of the West Coast

system at USC.

"The toughest thing is this will be Mark's third offensive

coordinator in six seasons. The guy has had to learn a new system just

about every other year. From a consistency standpoint, that just doesn't

translate to success in the NFL. You really need to be secure in what

you're doing mentally in order to compete at the highest level.''

Sanchez is coming off of a rock bottom season and will have little

certainty going into the upcoming one.

“I don’t think there’s a clear-cut favorite in my opinion,"

Rex Ryan said of the Jets' quarterback position last week.

I just think it’s going to be competition from day one. Sanchez will

take the first snap, but that’s all you can say. It’s going to be an

open competition.”

While learning from Garcia, Sanchez is also working out with former

No. 1 overall pick Jamarcus Russell, who is trying to make his own

comeback.

~ ~ Let's take a look at whose stock is rising and falling this offseason in the AFC East.

Falling

~ 2. New York Jets, Tim Tebow :
It’s hard to understand why the Jets wouldn’t cut bait with their
backup quarterback. The Jets are still holding out hope that Tebow has
trade value before the NFL draft, but the market appears nonexistent.
Quarterbacks like Kolb, Matt Flynn, Carson Palmer and Jason Campbell
are switching teams all over the place. But there has been virtually no
interest in Tebow, who is definitely available. New York’s one-year
experiment with Tebow was a disaster, and the Jets and Tebow are better
off going their separate ways sooner than later. Holding out for a
seventh-round pick isn't worth it.

No team is going to trade for Tebow because they figure he'll be cut.

This is just speculation but I think that something will happen after the draft settles. A team making a Super Bowl push will grab Revis, the obvious choice being the Niners, and someone needing a read option backup will grab Tebow. The Seahawks being the obvious team for that.

Absent a trade both players will be Jets come the fall.

More teams would think that now compared to after the draft.    After the draft and during the season, most teams aren't going to give up much.

So Tebow for a 7th rounder and Revis for a 3rd rounder.     The closer it gets to the season, the more likely Revis and his agent will just wait out the season before signing some long term deal.   So at that point the Jets are trading a short term rental.  No team is going to give up that much for a rental player.

Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis isn’t the only one whose attendance at voluntary workouts

will be closely watched.

Tim Tebow, the backup quarterback who is expected to be released by the Jets
before the season starts, is planning to go to work with the team as
long as he’s on the team: Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that

Tebow will report to Jets voluntary workouts next week if he is still on the roster

when those workouts begin a week from today.

That’s not a big surprise, but no one would blame Tebow if he decided
to stay home: Voluntary workouts are voluntary, and if a player knows
he’s not in a team’s plans, he’s free to skip them.

But Tebow would surely prefer to know as soon as possible what the
Jets’ plans for him are, and so his planned attendance might help him in
that effort: It could push the Jets to cut him in the next week, as
they wouldn’t want to risk Tebow suffering some kind of fluke injury
that put him out for the year, which would mean the Jets would be forced
to put him on injured reserve and pay him his base salary.

Even if Tebow does go through the voluntary workouts just like his
teammates, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll have those teammates by the
start of training camp. Perhaps voluntary workouts are where Tebow will
say goodbye.

Why prolong the inevitable ? Free Tebow

The Jets have dragged out this Tim Tebow charade long enough. It's time

to move on. To quote ESPN colleague Skip Bayless, free Tebow.

Tebow isn't in their plans for 2013, and yet they will welcome him

for the start of voluntary workouts next Monday. Even though no one

would think less of him if he boycotts the workouts, Tebow is planning

to attend if he's still on the roster, a source confirmed.

Talk about awkward. There's no point in making him walk into the

locker room, knowing it's not for long. Haven't the Jets endured enough

distractions over the past 12 months? Why prolong the inevitable?

The Jets could have a double distraction, what with Tebow and Darrelle Revis

participating in the workouts. Maybe they could hang out together in

the locker room, catching up on old times. Wait, there are no old times.

Well, maybe they can exchange real estate-agent recommendations, seeing

as how they'll probably both be re-locating in the next few weeks.

The Jets could avoid this by simply releasing Tebow, but they're

clinging to the hope they can trade him before or during the draft. It's

not happening. If the Raiders received only a conditional seventh-round

pick for QB Carson Palmer, what could the Jets get for Tebow ? They

wouldn't get enough for a trip to Starbucks.

This delay is all about the Jets trying to save face. They traded a

fourth-round pick for Tebow and agreed to pay $2.5 million to the

Broncos, receiving virtually no return on the investment. Now new GM

John Idzik is trying to show his new boss he can turn nothing into

something by recouping a draft pick. If he can land an unconditional

pick for Tebow, he should be the frontrunner for executive of the year.

Except for the day he asked out of the Wildcat, Tebow has been a

good soldier. There's no reason for the Jets to spite him, which is what

they're doing to Revis. It's time to end the marriage. It doesn't have

to be nasty. They can always remain friends.

A little over a year ago, Mark Sanchez received a lucrative contract extension.
Now he's the subject of trade rumors. His name has been mentioned in the
Darrelle Revis talks with the Bucs, ProFootballTalk reported Friday.

Earlier Friday, one of the most respected voices in Jets history -- Curtis Martin --

questioned whether Sanchez can lead the Jets back to the playoffs. Tough

day for Sanchez.

"I'm just going to be frank: Mark has to play better," Martin told
ESPNNewYork.com after taping a "CenterStage" interview in Manhattan for
the YES Network. "If he doesn't play better, I think it will be very,
very difficult for them to have a good year."

The Hall-of-Fame running back never speaks ill of his former team,
but he was noticeably lukewarm when asked about Sanchez, who struggled
last season. Martin actually said he wanted to see Tim Tebow get more

playing time last season. Asked if Sanchez can play better, Martin

paused a moment.

"To be honest with you, I don't know," he said. "I mean, it's been
three or four years and it hasn't happened yet. He did well his first
two years; they went to the AFC Championship Game. He did what was
necessary, but I think it's a different team and a different time, so I
think his level of play has to go to another level.

"Do I think he has the God-given ability? Yes. I think putting it
together and taking it to the field, that's what is necessary right
now."

The Jets, too, have serious questions about Sanchez, and they'd
probably jump at the opportunity to trade his $8.25 million guaranteed
salary to another team. But a trade is unlikely to happen.

The Bucs have concerns about their own starter, Josh Freeman,
and they've stated publicly their desire to add competition, but it's
hard to imagine them taking on Sanchez's $8.25 million. Are they that
desperate to acquire Revis? Of course, the Bucs could try to renegotiate
Sanchez's contract as a precursor to a trade, but there apparently
haven't been any talks of that nature.

If the Jets were to trade Sanchez, they'd probably pick a
quarterback in the first or second round of the draft. They came away
impressed with West Virginia's Geno Smith after his recent pro day,

and they also like Syracuse's Ryan Nassib. Whether the Jets are

convinced Smith and/or Nassib is good enough to be the new

"franchise" quarterback is unknown.

Interesting back story to Sanchez and Freeman, both of whom were
first-round picks in 2009: The Jets' scouts graded Freeman higher than
Sanchez, but the organization changed its mind after a private workout
with Sanchez. The Jets traded up and picked Sanchez fifth overall. The
Bucs preferred Sanchez over Freeman, according to a source, but ended up
taking Freemen 17th overall.

By the way, the Martin "CenterStage" interview will premiere in June. It'll be a good watch.

Updating AFC East QB rankings

There has been a lot of quarterback turnover this offseason in the NFL.
In the AFC East, Ryan Fitzpatrick flopped again for the Buffalo Bills in
2012 and was released. The Bills in turn signed veteran Kevin Kolb in
free agency to compete with Tarvaris Jackson. The New York Jets also
signed David Garrard to compete with the embattled Mark Sanchez.

With that said, this is a good time to update quarterback rankings in

the AFC East :

~ ~ 5. Mark Sanchez, New York Jets

Analysis : Sanchez has had better days. Three years
ago he led the Jets to back-to-back AFC title games. But since then,
Sanchez has been on the decline and it’s questionable if he can recover
-- at least in a Jets uniform. Sanchez met with the New York media for
the first time Monday and sounds excited for the opportunity to start.
Sanchez can be serviceable if everything around him is going well, but
he cannot lift a team on his own. The Jets found that out the hard way
the past two years.

I’m sure there will be plenty of debate. We opened the forum on Twitter

earlier this week and got plenty of responses. Other quarterbacks who

didn't make the list are Ryan Mallett of the Patriots, Jackson, and

Tim Tebow of the Jets.

Mark Sanchez hopes to put a miserable 2012 season behind him this coming fall.

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez's lowest moment happened on Thanksgiving

night last season against the rival New England Patriots.

In a nationally televised game, Sanchez attempted to hand off the
ball to a running back who wasn't there and panicked. Instead of sliding
or taking a knee, Sanchez made it worse by deciding to become the
running back. He ran directly into the large backside of starting guard

Brandon Moore and fumbled the football, which was returned for a

touchdown by Patriots safety Steve Gregory.

The play is infamously known as the "butt fumble." But it also serves as a

watershed mark in Sanchez's NFL career.

This is the play that will define Sanchez if he's unable to revive
his career, which many believe is already over. But he has a guaranteed
salary of $8.25 million, so Sanchez is getting one final chance to
silence the critics and start for the Jets in 2013.

"As far as the emotional side, my heart and soul is into this, and I
was just excited to see a bunch of guys on the team again and get ready
to get going," Sanchez said on a conference call this week to kick off
New York’s offseason program. "That’s really where my head is at. I’m
fired up about this year, and I hope it’s a good one."

Few quarterbacks have received more opportunities the past few years
than Sanchez. His NFL career has been a roller-coaster ride.

AFC East QB rankings

Mark Sanchez had the lowest QBR in the AFC East in 2012.

Player Team Rating 1. Tom Brady Patriots 77.1 2. Ryan Tannehill Dolphins 52.3 3. Ryan Fitzpatrick Bills 45.8 4. Mark Sanchez Jets 23.4

Sanchez
struggled as a rookie in 2009 and threw more interceptions (20) than
touchdowns (12). But the Jets stuck with Sanchez, and he got better
during the playoffs, leading the Jets to his first AFC title game.
Sanchez maintained that momentum in 2010 and led New York to another AFC
title game. But Sanchez hit rock bottom in 2012 when he recorded the
league's lowest Total Quarterback Rating (23.4) and was eventually
benched for third-string backup Greg McElroy.

As a result, this is the first summer since Sanchez’s rookie year
when he will not be handed the starting job. Sanchez must earn it by
beating out veteran free agent David Garrard.

Sanchez will be playing for his third offensive coordinator in three
years. He’s struggled under former offensive coordinators Brian
Schottenheimer and Tony Sparano. Now, it’s the job of new Jets offensive
coordinator Marty Mornhinweg to get Sanchez’s career headed in the
right direction.

“I’m not sure that [sanchez] needs to be ‘fixed,’” Mornhinweg
recently said to reporters. “Mark has a lot of strengths, and he’s
played at a high level. It’s our job to get him to play at a high level
on a consistent basis. We would certainly like competition at all spots
and certainly [the quarterback] spot, the competition just makes
everybody better.”

One of Sanchez’s biggest strengths is his boundless optimism. Even
when much has gone wrong around him, Sanchez has always accepted blame
and seen the best in every situation.

Sanchez, who is the favorite, is approaching this summer’s quarterback battle

with Garrard the same way.

“I know Mr. [John] Idzik and Rex [Ryan] are big on competition, and
that was really the theme heading into this year. I completely
understand that,” Sanchez said. “I think it will bring out the best in
everybody on the team, and everybody has to compete for their spot, so I
totally respect that. I’m just concerned with preparing to play well
for this team and doing everything that I possibly can, everything in my
control to be the best quarterback on the roster and go play well.”

New York went 6-10 in 2012 and cut many veterans to get under the
salary cap. The Jets made a few bargain-basement signings in free agency
and aim to get younger in the draft with first-year general manager
John Idzik calling the shots. But this is a rebuilding team that looks
at least a year or two away from contending for the playoffs again.

But you can't tell that to Sanchez. This fifth season with the Jets
is the most important of his career. Sanchez will prove, once and for
all, whether he's a capable NFL starter or a career backup who never
could match the hype of being a top-five pick.

This year Sanchez is not looking back on all his mistakes, such as the

"butt fumble." He is only looking forward.

“Once you watch all that film, there’s nothing else to do except try
and improve and trying to understand how you got in that position and
what led to that, how to avoid some of those pitfalls if possible,”
Sanchez said. “Go back and really get after the fundamentals like you do
every offseason. ... It’s a whole new year and I’m excited to see the
kind of team that we have when it’s all said and done and we line up on
opening day.”
